Lawwell: Barton “would prefer to come to Celtic”

120

It’s unusual for Celtic to comment on transfer speculation, but this statement clarifies a few issues.  Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, today denied claims the club wanted to sign Joey Barton, instead insisting the player “would really prefer to come to Celtic” than sign for “his new club”.

Lawwell said:

“I think Joey’s been had by a bit of a matchmaker here”.

“I remember it well, we had just announced Brendan as our new Manager and I was with our Company Secretary in London at the time.   An agent called me saying that Joey was going to sign for Rangers but he would really prefer to come to Celtic and were we interested in signing him, but it wasn’t something we wanted to pursue”.

“These things happen to players sometimes in football, but needless to say we wish Joey well at his new Club”.

I hope that the “new club” and Joey sort out their differences.  They appear to be so well matched.

Just because previous offenders were not sacked for a disciplinary offence does not rule out a sacking for a subsequent offender. I once had an employee who was caught falsifying a timesheet. His defence was that it was a genuine mistake. He was suspended then given a written warning and a letter was issued to all staff. A month later, another employee did the same and was summarily dismissed.

Not saying Rangers will or should sack Barton for gambling, but just because Black wasn’t sacked doesn’t mean they can’t sack him.

  4. Some getting a bit hot and bothered by PL making a comment on Joey.Why?.Seems to me it was an amusing reply to a question asked of him.Did not look like a serious reply to me.

Then again,it was PL so permarage for some sets in.

Some really need to lighten up,or get some anger management classes.

The two situations are hardly analogous.

In your case the employer was directly affected by the actions of the employee.

That’s not the case with El Barto.

  6. People keep saying Celtic should speak out against our detractors, yet when they do, oh no, PL has said too much.

    They just can’t help themselves.

    Hilarious.

If it had been on a Rangers* game, it would have been more probable that they might want to go down that route; but the fact that they have let TWO previous offenders off with it would, IMHO, mean that even a half decent defence will negate that outcome.

I’ll take it on for him if he wants!

Johansen hit the bar with the penalty ———— he then tried to score with a header — that prevented Penman from putting the ball in the net . Genius . !!! The Deady Bears were 1 up ( from an offside goal ) . Celtic scored 3 in the last 10 or so minutes.

was this the 1/4 finals of the Scottish at Celtic park?

  9. Ernie –

    That wasn’t my point.

My point was, because one employee wasn’t sacked for an offence does not necessarily rule out the sacking of a second offender.

I can’t speak for others, but I’d rather the Club said something about the five way agreement and the same club narrative than a claim by El Barto.

If only to allay the suspicion that their reluctance to do so is because they are compromised.

Does this mean the bookies don’t have to pay out on the bet?

I can’t help thinking El Barto is playing everyone for mugs here.

  14. BartBet is just one part of the case against Joey. It hasn’t been put out there as a sackable offence on its own, just an example of a catalogue of alleged minor breaches that amount to a material breach.

I’d suggest that someone as well resourced as El Barto, if he is minded to do so, would argue that a precedent has been set by the treatment of the previous player.

And, on the face of it, placing a bet on a match involving another club, in a competition his own club was not participating in, would never justify summary dismissal.

  17. AuldTam

He says a lot about a player sevco are desperate to offload. Says nothing about sevco being a new club and the SFA’s lack of impariality.

Tried to keep it simple for you.

  18. Ernie –

    I agree.

Again, someone said Barton cannot be sacked because Black wasn’t. I merely pointed out that one does not necessarily rule out the other.

  20. Joey Barton, previous World Cup winner and multiple Champions League champion, has declared himself ‘greatest, wittiest, and most interesting’ footballer of all time, ever. He has urged all football fans to discuss him and any banal examples of his frippery as a testament to his cardinal place in the game.

Tomorrow we will discuss the ingredients required to make the perfect ice cubes. ;))

I seem to remember being at a game during which Wee Bertie was involved in a tackle that resulted in Davy Provan’s ankle being broken.

    OOOOPS!

    Hope you are well!

Had a chat with Bertie about that when he was at a Sydney CSA gathering a few years back.

Completely accidental said Bertie. He also said the Provan was a lovely guy.

Must say , I didn`t like Provan as a player.

    Very well thanks . Phil.

  24. The fact is that Black COULD have been sacked for his gambling offence, but Rangers needed him at the time and he had market value.

Also, people forgetting that Barton’s gambling offence has come to light while he is serving a suspension for a previous misdemeanour.

If Rangers sack him, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

When Celtic release a statement describing a match against an impoverished, newly promoted club, with a history extending back four years, as ‘a fantastic event for the club and our fans worldwide’ and ‘a great occasion’, I would have though it was fairly obvious what it has to do with Celtic.

  26. AuldTam

You happy for them to be seen as Scotland’s most successful club and have that ratified by SFA and SPFL. Are you happy for our game to be corrupt?

    Rhetorical questions btw.

  27. Could Joey Barton not have a case against bet fair for invasion of privacy ?

Or for releasing info from a private transaction?
