Lawwell: Barton “would prefer to come to Celtic”

120

It’s unusual for Celtic to comment on transfer speculation, but this statement clarifies a few issues.  Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, today denied claims the club wanted to sign Joey Barton, instead insisting the player “would really prefer to come to Celtic” than sign for “his new club”.

Lawwell said:

“I think Joey’s been had by a bit of a matchmaker here”.

“I remember it well, we had just announced Brendan as our new Manager and I was with our Company Secretary in London at the time.   An agent called me saying that Joey was going to sign for Rangers but he would really prefer to come to Celtic and were we interested in signing him, but it wasn’t something we wanted to pursue”.

“These things happen to players sometimes in football, but needless to say we wish Joey well at his new Club”.

I hope that the “new club” and Joey sort out their differences.  They appear to be so well matched.

It’s hit the papers while he is “serving a suspension” from Rangers. I would suspect (I think it’s almost certain) that Rangers* knew this by the weekend and that he would have been made aware of that almost immediately, and certainly by yesterday. It is possible that the whole thing has been rolled up into the 3 week suspension (which would make sense) and they could fine him 2 weeks wages for the “altercation” and 2 weeks wages for the betting. Ergo, they save another £40K.

We’ll see soon enough because Barton cannae haud his wheest very long!

‘The fact is that Black COULD have been sacked for his gambling offence,’

Unless Black was betting on an adverse result for a match in which he played I can’ see how he could be summarily dismissed.

  3. Afternoon all, from Playa Flamenca , Oriheula Costa. Staying with friends from Dublin who live out here now. Boozer sorted for game tomorrow.

The response from Peter Lawwell is mere tittle tattle. Meanwhile while the many historical issues regarding basic functions under the banner of sport ,can be filed under “no comment”.

Not giving a Bombay Duck about Barton.

Hoping to see our squad utilised tomorrow night. Play the young ones please Brendan. HH

  4. Our CEO speaks about a player who doesn’t play for us,and we have to wash his feet? All worship at the Altar of St Peter

“Wee Bertie also talked about Jimmy turning Davie Provan of Rangers inside out and added “But you know what? Big Provan never once tried to kick him – not that he could get a hold of him to kick mind you – But he didn’t try. There was just respect there, and in return there was no rubbing the noses in it, no antagonism, no nastiness.”

    Interesting.

I remember attending a game at Celtic Park where Rangers defenders took it in turns to kick the merde out of wee Jimmy.

On one occasion wee Jimmy ended up on the red blaise in front of the Main Stand.

Ian Archer described it as a rota system.

That way no-one would be sent off.

May have been the 3-1 game where Johansen took the penalty which hit the bar , and in which Celtic scored 3 goals in the last 10 minutes.

I also remember Davie Provan returning to his left back berth after Rangers had scored at Ibrox and giving the double handed vicky to the Celtic support.

Lets have no sanitised version of the conduct of some of the hun players.

    …………………………

Have to agree with you entirely on this. Most of them were Huns in Huns clothing. Baxter and Hendetson got on well with Celtic players away from the games but the rest were a shower. Many were thugs in football strips.

Some history being rewritten but it won’t have any impact on those of us who were there as witnesses.
