Laying commercial roots in Australia

701

This morning, Celtic announced an Academy link with a Sydney-based organisation to deliver a youth tournament ahead of the club’s visit there in November. Since the Ange Coming Home Tour deal was signed, the club have been looking at ways to broaden our footprint in Australia. Where you see ‘youth football tournament’, I am inclined to read, ‘laying down commercial roots’.

Our domestic market is fixed and, if anything, is likely to be butchered with young eyeballs migrating to the English Premier League. The great waves of Scottish migration to Australia and North America have been little more than trickle for decades. There is just not the same number of ex-pats there to sustain valuable streams.

Ignore these demographic trends and Celtic will shrink. It is difficult to swim against the EPL tide, but whatever we can do to irrigate new territories is worth trying. The more obvious question is what to do about Japan? I don’t see encouraging signs of building a Celtic oasis there. Pity.

  1. Does anyone else see managers from other teams copying Angels brand of football. Steve Clarke for definite. Football over the past year appears to be getting more attack minded with kick and rush football getting less. (Scotland apart)

I never fancied goalkeepers playing the sweeper role…but the more I see it the more I like it. Who would ever have thought that defensive players were actually ballers.

Ange has started a trend I hope continues for a long time. I also hope Scottish teams catch up. Agricultural football is definitely a thing of the past

I know Ange is not the first….but he’s proved you can take a losing/failing team and make them winners by following that philosophy.

Others are using the template to replicate Anges success

    Ireland playing in orange..

One of the things I talk about to English folk about the difference between us and them is the fact that I and many Celtic fans will happily wear a blue shirt, they never wear green, some of them can’t cope with green traffic lights.

Orange is on the Irish flag and it’s one more thing that they can’t claim.. wouldn’t buy one though.

I haven’t seen tonight’s game but I thought (in parts) versus Ukraine 2nd half we were pressing and pack hunting. On tonight’s game shortie commentary were commending cal and Greg at corner,’the never stop attitude from Ange’ coming through, however they appear bitty, can’t do it for a whole game.

Glad you enjoyed the musical. Pity thats its last night.. Everyone I know who has attended stated it was magical, in fact compulsive participation.

CQN royalty you say. Strange terminology, especially at this time.

With the obvious exception of Paul 67 I have always advocated that on this place at least there is no hierarchy. All posters and lurkers are equal.

I would even wager that those past and present who have given time and effort for good causes would chuckle at being called royalty.

Only an observation and certainly not criticism , but it just goes to show how ingrained that term of phrase is in our everyday language.

Hail hail to the Celtic musical, an integrated journal.

PS : Can you imagine the bigotfest at a huns musical. A giant sash bash in a public venue. We are half of nothing.

  12. Last season Anthony Ralston was without doubt the most improved player at Parkhead.

To date Grey Taylor fills that roll. I thought he improved the ream dramatically when he came on. Calmac needs this world Cup time to refresh his batteries.

    Great enjoyable game last night.

The royalty I refer to is not bestowed by birth, it is by deed, by honesty, by being humble and real, those to whom I refer as royalty would dismiss the term themselves and would laugh at my irony, they would get it

I have stood outside Celtic park rattling collection tins for good causes raised in CQN, was happy to contribute, it doesn’t make me better than anyone else.

  16. On the one that got away:

Understandably the talk on here is about John McGinn.. Better connected people than me have given thier views.

Maybe the simple reason is correct. Ie The powers at Hibs didn’t want John McGinn to go to a rival Scottish team, despite the players obvious connection.

One thing is for sure, he is performing and enjoying life in the EPL.

Donkeys ago on here I reckoned we should have taken a punt on Scott McKenna. We could have moulded him to our requirements. I have watched his progress with Forest.

I still think he is the realistic one that got away.

Your words give it all away.

CQN royalty — you want / need to be part of a hierarchy.

Just a case you despise any that you cannot join / won’t let you in.

Playground attitude that you really need to bin vs.

Old school tribalism if it is central to your adult life.

    Either way — not good.

It does however explain a lot of your comments — defending your hierarchy against viewpoints / opinions that in your eyes degrade or diminish it.

One thing / sorry many things this is not — progressive / inclusive / egalitarian.

I fear that your Nat luv politics is another area needing similar work.

LRB article on the ferry crisis / catastrophe.

It is an area close to my heart — 1970’s visits to the Ship Room at the K/grove sorry KAG..

… and my more current work in low carbon transportation.

Consequently much appreciated article that offers a great summary on the growing shambles with Calmac / CMAL / TS / SG all involved to varying degrees.

My shorthand is student politicians who need good news / can’t deal with bad news up against a transport bureaucracy that has ended up hating its customer base due to its lack of confidence and its lack of innovation..

    Not good at every level.

    Horrible for progressive politics.

    More resources means less output.

South Staffs disaster in the NHS comes close to explaining the attitudes involved.

Well that is my current train of thought on the shambles / horror story — might change over time if more / better info comes out.

Winning personal battles / fights becomes more important than delivering a service.

Not sure if I got to the article first with “Calmac / news” on Bing but I have used your link and Stx2’s link as shortcuts to get back to it as it offers the easiest way to the article.

Main point in all of this — waiting for the feedback.

From yourself / Stx2 / A.N. Other — huge issue for modern Scotland.

But so far silence — even from the Port where I know it is the talk of every steamie.

Only EL has put forward some comment.

I have to ask why no-one wants to discuss the issue?

    Is it the Scottish Cringe?

Is it playground gang dynamics — you need to take your cue from subject “oyalty” before you can offer your own opinion so that it fits in?

Either way silence on this huge topic would suggest that Indy anything is currently beyond us.

  23. Apologies to South Staffs NHS people.

The issue was Mid Staffs NHS trust / organisation.

Not the first time I have made this mistake.

So again apologies to any South Staffs NHS people who post on here.

    Celtic Football Club

    Foundation: 1888 – Glasgow

It all starts in 1853 with the Opera Il Trovatore (The Troubadour), written by Verdi. In act II, scene 1, the gypsies sing the famous Anvil Chorus.

Fast forward to 1879. W.S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan write the comic opera The Pirates of Penzance. They heavily rip off Verdi’s Anvil chorus for the song “With cat-like tread, upon our prey we steal”, which is sung by the pirates at the climax of the show.

Come, friends, who plough the sea,

    Truce to navigation;

    Take another station;

    Let’s vary piracee

    With a little burglaree!

Come, friends, who plough the sea,

    Truce to navigation;

    Take another station;

    Let’s vary piracee

    With a little burglaree!

Now fast forward to 1917. A military marching song is written by D.A. Estron and Theodore Morse called “Hail Hail the gangs all here”, based on “With Cat-like Tread”. The song is first recorded by Irving Kaufman, and becomes a number one hit in 1918.

    Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

The lyrics to the chorus are:

Hail! Hail! the gang’s all here,

What the deuce do we care,

What the deuce do we care,

Hail! Hail! we’re full of cheer,

What the deuce do we care Bill!

After this, at some point prior to the 1960’s the song is sung on the Parkhead Terraces as:

Hail Hail, the Celts are here,

What the hell do we care,

What the hell do we care,

Hail Hail, the Celts are here,

What the hell do we care now…

Then, in 1961, “Mr Glasgow” Glen Daly records a completely unrelated song called “The Celtic Song”. The music is credited as “traditional” and the lyrics are credited to “Liam Mallory”. However, nobody seems to know who Liam Mallory is, and it has been suggested that it is actually a pseudonym for Glen Daly himself!

It is also suggested however, that the song was written by a man called Mick McLaughlin, known as “Garngad Mick”, who allegedly also wrote “Hampden in the Sun”. The story goes that he sold the rights to the the Celtic Song to Glen Daly for a fiver!

Glen Daly also released a song called “Hail Hail Celtic” which is another completely original song, obviously inspired by the common “Hail Hail the Celts are Here” terrace chant. It bears some resemblance to Irving Kaufman song above.

Click below to download Glen Daly singing “Hail Hail Celtic”.

So today, when the Celtic fans sing “hail hail the celts are here” followed by “its a grand old team…”, we are singing two different songs, of which you now know the (almost) complete history!
