This morning, Celtic announced an Academy link with a Sydney-based organisation to deliver a youth tournament ahead of the club’s visit there in November. Since the Ange Coming Home Tour deal was signed, the club have been looking at ways to broaden our footprint in Australia. Where you see ‘youth football tournament’, I am inclined to read, ‘laying down commercial roots’.
Our domestic market is fixed and, if anything, is likely to be butchered with young eyeballs migrating to the English Premier League. The great waves of Scottish migration to Australia and North America have been little more than trickle for decades. There is just not the same number of ex-pats there to sustain valuable streams.
Ignore these demographic trends and Celtic will shrink. It is difficult to swim against the EPL tide, but whatever we can do to irrigate new territories is worth trying. The more obvious question is what to do about Japan? I don’t see encouraging signs of building a Celtic oasis there. Pity.

SCULLYBHOY;
Been very busy recently….if not tomorrow, looking like Tues.Is Culturlann still the venue?
I am working tomorrow morning, but have to leave early to get to Altnagelvin hospital for a bone scan. Wednesday is Antrim Hospital for isotope scan (leaves me radioactive for 24 hours). All in all a busy week, so I humbly suggest either next Monday 3 Oct or Thursday 6 Oct in Culturlann. If that suits you.
Sorry, I should have addressed that to Joe.
Good luck that SCULLYBHOY, thoughts and prayers…

Sorry lad – not Danny.
Teemu Pukki
Imagine we tried to sign him but didn’t
Would we be complaining about missing out..
1 goal every 3.5 games with a poor Norwich team in the Premier league
55 goals in the Championship in 2 seasons
10 goals in 10 matches for Finland in one season…
A goal every 2 games in his last season with Bronby
Think how many goals he would score in Scotland
Scullybhoy….Celtic team pic at 10.44 on 24/09….As they say the camera never lies …Check Melrose’s face …he really wants to be there….not !!!….how the hell did the other Celts not realise his intent and take care of him during training …bizarre …what an absolute imposter he was !!!

Not going till tomorrow
I listed the players who arrived.
You say no CB- what was Benkovic?
You say no LB- what was Izzy?
You specify Centre midfielder ( I assume to rule out Christie) can you cite a reference to where BR narrowed his midfield option down to this and why he accepted Malumbu without complaint?
I have no doubt that BR wanted J McG and I accept that he phoned him to try and get him to sign but there were two versions of that conversation. You cite BR’s version where he said he already had given his word to Villa (kind of begs the question as to why he took the phone call if that was so) and there was John McGinn’s version where he said he signed for Villa because the Villa manager told him he would get first team game time. So- did BR not give him that guarantee- leading to the Grant & Collin’s interpretation of events.
For me , both are self serving cover stories.
John McGinn, as it turns out did not “walk over broken glass” ; he did not even “break his word” as countless other footballers had done. It could not have been Peter Lawwell who failed to offer him a guarantee of game time so do you think McGann was lying when he said that Villa gave him a guarantee that Celtic (coach) did not match or was BR lying when he said that he had already “signed” by giving his word?
For me, I don’t think the money lies- EPL wages trumped walking on glass.
But the money hasn’t given me its gossip yet

THEY EMBARRASSED THE HOOPS from NTV issue 7 by James Payne
Celtic for most of their 100 years have been renowned for fielding good to great forwards. The first fifty years saw such legends as Mcmahon, Quinn and the greatest of them all, McGrory and whilst the first twenty years after the war saw standards slip, with such no hopers as Conway, Colrain and the magnificent Maxwell, there were still some good inside and centre forwards in the team – the MacPhails, Fernie and Steve Chalmers. Since 1961 when inside forwards became strikers, Celtic have fielded an almost unbroken run of great forwards from McBride, through Dalglihs, Deans, Nicholas & McClair to the present Walker and McAvennie. But when they slipped, my God, did they slip – witness “Dumbo” McInally.
But for sheer embarrassment, the worst had to be Jim Melrose.
It may seem surprising to some to include the man who scored the winning goal in our first league victory at home against Aberdeen in 2 and a half years, but for all his memorable moments of glory – the other was a great goal in his league debut against Hibs – Melrose was a complete disaster.
Signed for £100,000 from Coventry City in August 1983, his arrival at Celtic heralded the advent of four years of almost uninterrupted rubbish.
Clearly somebody has felt that Jim was a forward in the Rossi or even Archibald mould i.e. completely useless outside the opposition penalty area, but more than alright in it, but the record books suggest otherwise. From Partick, Leicester and Coventry, Jim never exceeded more than a eleven goals in a league season.
Completely without brain, his squabbles with linesmen who had (correctly) ruled him to be offside, often cheered up a grey afternoon and earned him a worthy caution.
Treacle like acceleration, his attempts at “cunning flicks” would not have fooled even the most inept of defenders (Dave MacKinnon of Rangers)
Risible when he attempted to run with the ball, Jim reminds you that dribbling was something that O.A.P.’s and children do with their food.
His finishing made you pine for goals that were 20 feet high and twenty yards wide. Plumrose’s greatest charm was his delight in running as fast as he could chasing balls he hadn’t a hope of catching and then having to be substituted with 20 minutes to play because his bandy legs could carry him no further.
However the game for which he will best be remembered was at Tannadice in October 1983.
Celtic went into this game against the then League Champions unbeaten but they were already showing signs of creaking.
Almost straight from kick-off “Mello” unveiled a new tactic. Clearly aware that his normal efforts would not bother Hegarty and Co, Jim threw up in the centre circle. Clearly the pie he had eaten during Davie Hay’s pre-match team talk had not agreed with his greyhound metabolism.
His next contribution to the match came 84 minutes later.
Celtic , in one of those typical Tannadice days, were two down, despite having played quite well, when all of a sudden “Primrose” arrived as if from nowhere to score a diving header.
The fans – sensing a fightback – began to celebrate, only to be greeted by the scorer gesturing to them with the type of display normally produced by “drunken yobs (copyright Daily Mail 1988) regalling some unfortunate with tales about the conquest of some dazzling female made by themselves.
Actually this gesture finally succeeded in alienating “Rednose” completely from the Celtic support but I prefer to look back on Jim as some kind of comedy turn rather than a senior footballer. And admit you did snigger when you heard that Chris Kamara broke Jim’s jaw for an alleged racist remark while the great one was playing for Shrewsbury – his fifth club since leaving Celtic (at least)
What with vomiting, idle sexual boasts and personal abuse, Jim was clearly the missing link between Alf Garnett and Harry Enfield.

Just a couple of wee observations. Now, everyone has opinions about players and of course has every right to them, but sometimes those opinions just might cloud someone’s judgements.
First of all look who the manager is at that time. Do you actually think that any player playing for/with Celtic at that time would have been tolerated if they were not putting in 100% into each and every game? I met Davie a few times, including away from football and I can tell you his reputation of a ‘hard’ man, in its most general sense, was absolutely true and justified. The absolute least that would have been tolerated by Davie Hay was total professionalism.
Secondly, I actually coached the young Jim Melrose in his youth period and knowing me and my Celtic leanings very well he never, ever gave any inkling of being a DOB (a charge which has been levelled against him on more than one occasion on this site).

First rule of holes — if your in one stop digging.
First rule of barrel scraping — when the splinters stop you are mining fresh air / not good.
Thank you for your efforts at explaining our 2018 Summer transfer efforts,
All you have done is remind us how bad we were that summer and who needs to take the blame — hint it is a lazy / second rate property bean counter who had only one talent.
He was good at carrying a rich man’s bag.
Loving the list of players that we did seemingly sign:
LM = signed in Jan 2018 not in the summer — loaned put in Jan 2019.
YM = last minute two year deal aged 31.5 — one game / loaned out in Jan 2019.
EI = lazy signing to fill a gap caused by PL mucking up the signing of the real target.
DA = two year loan project aged 19 who got crocked.
FB = last minute season loan project that worked for him / and us.
RC = came back from loan and got games.
TR = came back from loan and played 5 games that season with another loan in 2019.
SA = came back from loan / never played / pre-contract to Hibs in Jan 2019.
No wonder the team looked lost in the CL qualifiers.
JMcG was the main target that summer to bolster the MF and PL sunk the deal to get one over on BR because BR had upset DD — broken his heart with big money China talk.
Total shambles — yet still they clap.
There are none so blind as those that will not see.

‘JMcG would have “walked over broken glass” to play for Celtic’
My goodness this is, IMHO, beyond old.
Would be interested see how “John McGinn” trends on here during international breaks or in the aftermath of a defeat.
Who would win a fight between
“walking over broken glass to play for Celtic'”
and
“fulfilling the final 46½ weeks of your contract before signing for Celtic as a free agent” ?

This bhoy had an ancient name.
This has become a non Glasgow Celtic blog. Way too much partisan “political” stuff from way outside
of Celtic turf.
Posted on this site almost from its inception and mostly lurked thereafter but it has gone massively downhill at a rate of knots.
So, out of here.
HH to the mighty Celtic.

I had an isotope screening a few years ago. Was told to avoid as many people as possible especially children and pregnant women (not as if there would be pregnant men) for the next 24 hours as I would be ‘ radioactive’. Thing is I needed to have a pish every 20 minutes or so afterwards.
Evening all.
I never posted on this site for around 4 years but, almost on a whim, 4 weeks ago and on my 61st birthday I logged in and posted my thoughts on how Celtic was doing as well as mildly disagreeing with my friend Burnley 78 about how good the last few years have been compared to the team of the great era of the 60s and early 70s. I also said I thought we were looking a bit underdone. A few hours later we won 9-0 and for about 15 minutes in the first half produced some of the most exhilerating football since the days my dad used to lift me over the turnstiles. I know nothing! One prolific contributor with an obnoxious mannee seems to me to have nothing positive to say about Celtic- but mostly this seems a civilised place to discuss Celtic.
Celtic has meant a great deal to me over the years – possibly too much- but , since the summer of 1983 , I have not nollowed Celtic with a blind faith. As a child, adolescent and young man I was disappointed when we lost- the loss to Feyenoord is something I have never quite recovered from- but that summer of 1983 was a watershed for me. ( I won’t elaborate and have no wish to rake over some very cold coals). I had big fallings out with Celtic during and after an infamous match with Rangers in May 1999 – again ancient history so let’s not go there- but the nearest to a disconnect for me came during the years from 2012 to 2021. The team was sometimes good to watch but the upper management of Celtic exasperated me – the appointment of Ronny Deila, the ‘project signings’, the resignation of Rodgers and reappointment of Neil Lennon as manager, the losses to Cluj and Copenhagen and the fact that , uniquely as far as I could see, during the long months fans were excluded from the stadium not a single flag or banner from supporters was displayed within Celtic Park were all not too my taste. Res 12 too. We had become soulless and those in charge contemptible. Fans chasing team buses after losses did not help. But the CEO left and fans got let back in. And the team often played wonderfully. The elastic stretches but never breaks. And it’s history now.
The History – my own , that of the team on the park and the rest of it- is part of why I support Celtic. I come from a family that ticks the boxes for supporting Celtic. Catholic, born in Glasgow, Irish origins – and I’d never deny that I was as a child always likely to support Celtic if I liked football but I was never forved into it and I support Celtic through choice. Much of it goes back to my first experience of seeing Celtic play for the first time.
16 March 1968. Brockville. John Clark and Bertie Auld injured so Jim Brogan and Charlie Gallagher in. Big Yogi preferred to Stevie Chalmers. 3-0 win. Tommy Gemmell, Bobby Lennox and Willie Wallace with the goals. Partly efficient, partly artistic. Quite tense until the 3rd goal with just over 30 minutes to play. My dad telling me not to sing certain songs but after the third goal we were all off to Dublin. I loved being part of it. Wee Jimmy, the two Bobbies, big Tommy Gemmell, Yogi and the rest helped but there was something about the connection between those on the terracing, on the pitch and in the dugout that I still cannot articulate but understood even as a 6 year old.
I don’t support Celtic because of any political cause even though I do support most of the political causes that many of my fellow supporters adhere to. The football and the supporters- however maddening both cam be occasionally- is enough for me. But why do you support Celtic?
Yours with too much time on his hands
