Laying commercial roots in Australia

701

This morning, Celtic announced an Academy link with a Sydney-based organisation to deliver a youth tournament ahead of the club’s visit there in November. Since the Ange Coming Home Tour deal was signed, the club have been looking at ways to broaden our footprint in Australia. Where you see ‘youth football tournament’, I am inclined to read, ‘laying down commercial roots’.

Our domestic market is fixed and, if anything, is likely to be butchered with young eyeballs migrating to the English Premier League. The great waves of Scottish migration to Australia and North America have been little more than trickle for decades. There is just not the same number of ex-pats there to sustain valuable streams.

Ignore these demographic trends and Celtic will shrink. It is difficult to swim against the EPL tide, but whatever we can do to irrigate new territories is worth trying. The more obvious question is what to do about Japan? I don’t see encouraging signs of building a Celtic oasis there. Pity.

For me games where you don’t have a dog in the fight are rarely exciting. But by any measure this is poor.

  2. The England game is a terrible watch, but at least its on council TV.

The Scotland and Ireland game is on that mad Premier channel

  3. I’ll say this that at least the commentators are reasonably balanced. A change to the Clive Tildsley school of bias.

  4. QUIET PERSON,

Just to annoy certain posters I have had many monikers in one day with one tablet only, no need for multiple email addresses and devices.

  5. Hi Jimbo 67

I hope all yours are good and lifes treating you well.

Was that the McTall night? In the Partick Tavern?

Jeez, a few changes since then

BMCUW was up last week and a crowd of good Celts met out in The Vaults,Coatbridge to have the craic.

I often think of that night as our late departed friend Delaneys Dunky was there, his year anniversary is soon

    Jimbo.

I know, what I was getting at is if the site had software to prevent posting under more than I name it would easily be overcome by multiple emails etc.

  7. Dier, Walker and Maguire, three carthorses, Italy need to put them more on their back feet, Di Marco is great going forward, if he gets the chance.

It was indeed in Partick. Delaney’s Dunky was a lovely fella- jeez a year.

Like everybody else had a rough two or three years – the two pre-covod years were not so personally great- and still working for a living which I hoped I would not be but good shape now andstill just about fighting the good fight. Will miss the game next Saturday to attend my wee sister’s 60th. She thought it a great idea to invite the weans which means it’s on the afternoon so most of us will be pretending we are not watching the match on our phones. Including the birthday ghirl herself!

  11. Interesting that instead of them being seeded in the Euros and World cup groups where qualifying is routine, they can’t get a win in a competitive group.
