Laying commercial roots in Australia

This morning, Celtic announced an Academy link with a Sydney-based organisation to deliver a youth tournament ahead of the club’s visit there in November. Since the Ange Coming Home Tour deal was signed, the club have been looking at ways to broaden our footprint in Australia. Where you see ‘youth football tournament’, I am inclined to read, ‘laying down commercial roots’.

Our domestic market is fixed and, if anything, is likely to be butchered with young eyeballs migrating to the English Premier League. The great waves of Scottish migration to Australia and North America have been little more than trickle for decades. There is just not the same number of ex-pats there to sustain valuable streams.

Ignore these demographic trends and Celtic will shrink. It is difficult to swim against the EPL tide, but whatever we can do to irrigate new territories is worth trying. The more obvious question is what to do about Japan? I don’t see encouraging signs of building a Celtic oasis there. Pity.

    Apart from Labour unelectable in Scotland,you can put England,Wales etc on the list ,for them to maybe run the country is firstly to take control of Gas ,Electricity etc,and could the SNP take control of the Gas and Electricty Companies.

    Andalusia is a lovely and distinctive part of Spain,I made the homage to Seville in 03 and that’s my only experience of it.Beautiful.

    It’s been reported that a special Competitions Control Committee of Roscommon GAA has made its recommendation

    The person who allegedly assaulted a GAA referee in Roscommon looks set to receive a 96-week suspension from all GAA activities.

     

     

    The Roscommon Herald report that the weighty punishment has been recommended by the county’s CCC after they read the referee’s report.

     

     

    The U17s match between St Aidan’s and St Dominic’s in Ballyforan on August 31 was called off after official Kevin Naughton was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

     

     

    The incident prompted a county-wide strike by referees over the lack of respect they are afforded in their roles with verbal abuse widespread and physical examples of abuse also becoming more commonplace.

     

     

    Footage emerged of the referee lying stricken on the field in Ballyforan, however, no footage has surfaced of an actual assault on the match official.

     

     

    The alleged incident took place early in the second half when the referee issued a red card to an individual who was not one of the players but who had encroached on the field.

     

     

    Emergency medical attention was called and the referee was taken to hospital for observation before being released with no significant injury.

     

     

    In the days after the furore over the incident, Roscommon GAA issued a statement saying that it “strongly condemns any behaviour that puts any of our match officials at risk” and promised a full investigation.

     

     

    An Garda Síochána has said that it is conducting enquiries into the matter.
