Leader, motivator. One more for the captain

769

Spending £4.4m on a 22-year-old Hibs midfield player in 2007 was a significant demonstration of faith by Gordon Strachan and Celtic.  A year later, Rangers owner, David Murray, said he was not prepared to meet the wages Celtic offered for Scott Brown, a player both clubs wanted to sign.

Murray was not known for underplaying his financial clout, this comment felt more like a taunt, implying Celtic were rash in spending so much on a player who was still bedding into life at the top.  That first season at Celtic ended with Scott watching Barry Robson play a magnificent cameo as Celtic came from behind to win the title, the first of 22 major honours won as Celtic player and captain.

His off-field persona could not be further from the strutting bulldog he is on the park.  Mixing with fans he is understated and generous with his time, there are no signs of the laser-focussed leader he becomes in short sleeves.

The No. 6 role does not provide many scoring opportunities but Scott has had his fair share.  Defenders never figured that showing him onto his (apparently) weaker left was not a good idea.  If you close your eyes and picture his goals you’ll repeatedly see him drop the shoulder before striking with his left.

The passage of a decade probably diminishes the importance in my memory of a Scottish Cup equaliser, when he led 10 men off the ropes at Ibrox, somehow the joy of a last minute winner against Hamilton feels more important than the rest.

Captain for 11 years, he motivated and disciplined the playing squad.  He led by example of professionalism; the kind of player every manager loves to have in the squad.

In Celtic history there is only one captain who could relate to leading men through such a period of domination, Billy McNeill.  Billy was also 35 when he left Celtic, also after the first title loss in a decade.  Our greatest captain went out held shoulder high after winning the Scottish Cup.  Scott Brown deserves no less.  One more for the captain.

I don’t think there is a direct correlation between Celtic fans and any party any longer.

40 years ago I’m sure there would have been a significant majority for labour. However I do agree there is a significant movement for independence in the support these days, sadly that also seems to have resulted the hard line unionists moving to the right and voting tory.

That I think is very sad, it’s something I couldn’t ever contemplate.

All of this means a squeeze for labour of course.

Broony’s earlier years with us was not brilliant, I recall writing on this blog asking how many bhoys left CP and said Broony had a great game. But after a few years it changed dramatically.

I’m not sad he’s leaving because he’s past his best and certainly didn’t want a Roy Aitken situation where a large proportion of us wanted him to pack in his boots.

‘and one thing the Celtic sypporter/ irish descent/Catholic has never been us pro unionist.’

    ###

Depends what you mean by pro unionist.

If you mean ‘in favour of Scotland remaining as part of the UK’ then it is self evident that the majority have been pro unionist throughout most of Celtic’s history, and arguably still are.

But I suspect you’ve got your own rather unhinged McGlashanesque idea of what being pro unionist actually means for Scots.

  6. Well there you go.

All the Indy supporters who claim they don’t like the SNP can now vote for Alex Salmond’s new party.

    “Problem”. Solved.

Will they be more even handed when condemned us and congratulating the huns ?

  7. Scott Brown has been good for Celtic and improved in the early days to becoming a better and more complete player. By going to Aberdeen he will broaden his knowledge and will be a success, He can set a good example at training with his short sleeve, shorts combo no matter the weather. He can also encourage and motivate players well in games and I am sure in Training. He is good with bringing youngsters on a good example is Frimpong who he had a big effect on. These attributes will make him a success as a coach. I hope he will learn as a manager.

  8. When Scotland is independent, the vaccine rolled out, COVID gone away, Celtic on top again, and Desmo has sold his shares, ………………….

what are we going to talk about.

  9. How many on here and other Celtic sites said they would drive him tae the airport, bus, train station etc, waste of 4.4 million.

And then came that day when he done the “Broonie” tae spit the dog, after that he was God’s gift tae the game.

Fitba supporters can be very fickle, ask Gareth Bale.

  10. Coming from Belfast I don’t get this using ‘unionist’ as a term of abuse that is considered to obviously damn the recipient. It all depends on the context. The way it seems to be used in Scotland is child-like.

Would you rather have been a ‘rebel’ in the American civil war or a ‘unionist’?

Would it have been better to have been a ‘nationalist’ in the Spanish civil war or a ‘loyalist’?

  11. I am beginning to think, Alex is a double agent got at by the Ruskies, and Dermot

    ————————

Former SNP leader Alex Salmond has announced the creation of a new pro-independence party which will stand in the Scottish Parliament election.

He said the Alba Party expected to field at least four candidates across every region of the country.

His statement came at the end of a dramatic week at Holyrood.

On Wednesday, Mr Salmond said he would take fresh legal action over the conduct of the Scottish government’s top civil servant.

A report by MSPs on Tuesday described the government’s handling of harassment complaints against Mr Salmond as “seriously flawed”.

The previous day, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was cleared of breaching the ministerial code over her involvement in the Alex Salmond saga.

Analysis box by Nick Eardley, political correspondent

For months, a small but loyal group in the SNP have been unhappy with the party on independence and other issues.

Many of them supported Alex Salmond during the turmoil of the last few weeks. They are now being offered a political home.

Mr Salmond is pitching it as an opportunity for provide a “supermajority” for independence.

Under the system for Holyrood, the more constituency seats you win, the harder it is to win them on the list. Mr Salmond wants people to use the latter to back his party.

But this is a big moment in Scottish politics.

The SNP have managed to hold a broad pro-independence coalition together. Today that is fracturing.

Whether or not Mr Salmond’s new venture is successful, this is a direct challenge to the idea the SNP is the only party for independence.

I wouldn’t characterize it as throwing a league.

I’d regard it more as taking a long term strategic decision and working towards that goal by managing resources in a particular way which might not necessarily involve expending a disproportionate degree of effort and finances at every stage of the journey.

And whilst certain decisions at certain times might not guarantee a particular outcome they probably make it more likely.

You can hobble a horse without having to break its leg.

  28. We don’t need Rangers in any form. The Board clearly indicate in ” we are not half of anything”. We have stated that we don’t need anyone else and our finances are tailored to self sufficient,

We don’t want Rangers either, I think that a poll of season ticket holders would vote a preference of “No Rangers” rather than Rangers in the league, i know there are some who love the intensity of the Derby, but, I claim they are in the minority.

It would be good for “Glasgow Rugby”, Braehead Clan, Golf and Bowling Clubs,”

I don’t miss their bigotry, cheating but its still there. i think the Celtic Board think as I do.

Its not a 6 way agreement, Celtic have no say in this or LNS. We were excluded as its not our business and only have one vote.
