Leader, motivator. One more for the captain

769

Spending £4.4m on a 22-year-old Hibs midfield player in 2007 was a significant demonstration of faith by Gordon Strachan and Celtic.  A year later, Rangers owner, David Murray, said he was not prepared to meet the wages Celtic offered for Scott Brown, a player both clubs wanted to sign.

Murray was not known for underplaying his financial clout, this comment felt more like a taunt, implying Celtic were rash in spending so much on a player who was still bedding into life at the top.  That first season at Celtic ended with Scott watching Barry Robson play a magnificent cameo as Celtic came from behind to win the title, the first of 22 major honours won as Celtic player and captain.

His off-field persona could not be further from the strutting bulldog he is on the park.  Mixing with fans he is understated and generous with his time, there are no signs of the laser-focussed leader he becomes in short sleeves.

The No. 6 role does not provide many scoring opportunities but Scott has had his fair share.  Defenders never figured that showing him onto his (apparently) weaker left was not a good idea.  If you close your eyes and picture his goals you’ll repeatedly see him drop the shoulder before striking with his left.

The passage of a decade probably diminishes the importance in my memory of a Scottish Cup equaliser, when he led 10 men off the ropes at Ibrox, somehow the joy of a last minute winner against Hamilton feels more important than the rest.

Captain for 11 years, he motivated and disciplined the playing squad.  He led by example of professionalism; the kind of player every manager loves to have in the squad.

In Celtic history there is only one captain who could relate to leading men through such a period of domination, Billy McNeill.  Billy was also 35 when he left Celtic, also after the first title loss in a decade.  Our greatest captain went out held shoulder high after winning the Scottish Cup.  Scott Brown deserves no less.  One more for the captain.

I have read a couple of your recent posts – you are a breath of fresh air.

The Unionist term in Scotland to ‘tar’ all those who support the UK and all it brings us, was introduced into Scottish politics by the SNP. It was a deliberate move to introduce an Ulster dimension to con the traditional Celtic/Catholic/Irish (CCI) Labour vote.

It has worked in so much as the shifting of the CCI vote, probably around 350k is a deciding factor in the SNP success in FPP UĶ seats, Holyrood majority & why the Referendum in 2014 was closer than it should have been.

These conned converts just haven’t thought things through – our kind, our 17%, should be frightened out of our wits at the prospect if an independent Scotland where our advisories will hold the ‘whip hand’ and be much bigger fish in a smaller pool. Look how we are treated NOW in a bitter Scotland – the vice will tighten after independence. Our schools will be the first target, swept away in a cost-cutting exercise by a government trying to run a de facto bankrupt country from day one.

Salmond now ‘throws his hat in the ring’ – The Empire Fights Back. Forget about what he said at his news conference, this move is about getting back at Sturgeon and her cabal. His real message is that the SNP cult is so corrupt, it has to be replaced. This is the man who took the SNP from ‘ceilidh dancers’ to power in Scotland – the knife has gone in.

Finally, the election bribe by Sturgeon of 4% to the NHS. This would not be possible were Scotland not in the UK – it is only possible due to the Barnett Formula whereby public spending is £2000 per head higher here than in England – our £BILLION pound deficit(overdraft) grows every year…and is paid off every year by the UK.

*wee story about Harvey I read about several years back, over here i the Inverclyde area making a movie and bursting for a drink on a Sunday morning, allegedly a well known actor/producer’s brother took him aboard a paddle ship in the area s the bar was open and they spent all day going up and doon the watter.

  21. It surely cannot be a serious comment to suggest that “our schools” would be abolished in a cost-cutting exercise in an independent Scotland? Schools are schools no matter their label. The pupils would still need to be educated whether in so-called Protestant, Catholic, Islamic or Jewish schools. As for the economic references, this has been covered ad nauseum.

  22. Questions are being asked on why the sharp suited mhan is involved in the managerial search,

As the Kaiser said, not only he but Ian Bankier and the incoming CEO are also helping him choose the next boss which will still have to be confirmed by the Board

Like Peter or not he is an accountant who has looked after our finances relatively well and is probably still involved to ensure no eff ups in the contract like the initial one the fraud had which we had tae renegotiate.

However I think their wasting their time and would be better suited going on the various Celtic sites for advice.

Having sat in on a plethora of interviews it’s not always the one with the best resume that is hired, personality and a “good fit” also can swing the choice.

  23. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Scott is at a stage in his career where he needs coaching experience, JK has that role at Celtic so he has to move to another club to get it, understandable but still gutted to see him go, he was our comfort blanket for years and will be sorely missed.
