Leaders found

You could make an argument that last night’s game was the most important of the season. A win away to Hearts, bereft of captain, top striker and creative fulcrum is statement football.

It says we have the wherewithal in the squad to overcome what continues to be a campaign plagued by plague, among other things.

Yesterday we spoke about the need for new leaders.  Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate and Giorgos Giakomakis stepped forward.  They will continue to improve as Ange Postecoglou shapes the team.

We are far from certain of winning this league, but it well take an exceptional side to stop us.

Last night was a terrific win.

We are not yet the finished article as many posters have pointed out but to go to Edinburgh with only 4 players or so who have played before at Tynecastle, try to play football in the midst of agricultural tackles and opponents who intended to seriously injure you (Devlin on Jota, Haring on any number of occasions) in a hate-filled atmosphere while the referee gives every help to those opponents and punishes you instead of protecting your health & safety then indeed it is a victory to be savoured. Our players were indomitable and can be proud of themselves. Hatate scored a wonder goal, Giakoumakis used his physique to good effect and scored another terrific near post goal. O’Riley had a brilliant debut and our centre backs played well.

I feel elated this morning and as someone else has already pointed out, when we have a full squad and they have been bedded in, we’ll be scudding the likes of Hearts 4-0.

  2. Genocide — we did let it happen again.

The Ottoman genocide of the Armenians was well known about both during and after the Great War / WW1.

Then there was the historical case of the “Plains Indians” / nomadic native Americans on the western prairie where their food source was exterminated to reduce their ability to resist.

The Nazi genocide of the Jews would / should not have come as a great surprise given their hatred of the Jews and the way they had dealt with political prisoners and medical patients earlier in their period of control.

Plus the Spanish Civil war and the bombing of civilians.

The only surprise would have been their effectiveness and their thoroughness in carrying it out.

And then you have the modern day equivalents:

Starting with SH vs Kurds using chemical weapons.

Then SH vs Marsh Arabs using guns and engineering.

Currently ethnic cleansing seems to be the preferred method of long term change.

Last night was a great result.

Just a case that the performance could be improved.

Better to shout now rather than when it is too late.

  4. Just read that of the 14 players used last night only 4 were at the club last year.

  6. With regards to posters’ opinions on our players , Ange’s opinion of our playing staff is the one that matters most.

St Tam’ s . I get the impression if you had saw Jimmy McGrory playing that in you.r opinion he should have scored more goals for us. lol.

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar. Had a few in Sharkeys last night. Feels like a few dozen. 🙄

When you say it like that you see the change that AP has delivered.

Hopefully more change to come — another new player in would be good.

    CB or another wide player.

  9. My friends in Celtic,

The Orally man did very well. If he had been replaced after 70 minutes it would have been the perfect debut

It was a great win. No doubt about that, however anybody that watched the game would know that our second half performance did not match the first half.

This is not a dig at the team / manager it is a fact.

To strive for continued improvement is healthy not negative.

HH to all, the journey continues.

  10. The usual suspects are getting it,some of you are never happy.

If i remember correctly Cooke was getting it big time on here when we played RC……cheat.

My opinion on him was i thought the lad could be a player if he didn’t spend so much time going down at the first puff of smoke hit him.

Give our players a break God help them if we loose a game.

  12. Dear sirs,

    and your readership.

I am writing to you regarding the strange continued selection of one James McGrory for the Celtic FC by Mr Maley.

Unfortunately the fellow in question is no Quinn nor McMenemy, and is a poor all round footballer, he never takes a corner , afreekick or a thrown in, his penalties are few and far between, he cannot dribble or find a team mate as his passing game is so woeful. He lacks height, never gets a clearing header and wont track back a man for fear of injury. His most glaring failure, a greedy possesion of the ball, choosing to shoot and score even when his fellow front men are open to the pass.

Mark my words, Celtic will not benefit from this player if all he can do is score goals.

You were looking for tickets for Saturday for a relative.

If still needed have a couple spare if you want to drop a wee donation to a good charity and I could meet your folks pre game somewhere around the stadium to pass them on ?

  14. Daezen Maeda comes on after 58 minutes as Japan beats China 2-0. Despite the Aussies 4-0 win over Vietnam with Tom Rogic and McGree scoring, they lag the Saudis and Japan in the table.

  15. Be careful what you wish for.

If we had signed Riley McGree, we would probably not have chased after Baba O’Riley and would have been forced to play Bitton and McCarthy as starters last night with Soro as the only one to sub for them.

I haven’t seen much of McGree but it is hard to believe he is much superior to O’Riley who was excellent in our periods of swift short passing last night.

  16. Just noticed that Japan play the Saudis at home next week. Big Tam will be hoping for a Saudi win, as the Aussies have an easier game at Oman.

On the other hand, a Japan win would probably lead to maybe 3 of our players going to the World Cup.

    =========================

    Nah – he’s still a Hun ;-))

I am balanced enough to recognise the odd, aberrant reasonable display from a Hun ref though. Madden used to have some reasonable games, but he’s reverted to type.

Least favourites (although this changes fairly regularly) are Clancy (gives the impression of being scared of controversy, so generally avoids obvious tough decisions) and Collum (has the odd decent game, but sees often things that no-one else seems to).

  18. The story of the Holocaust, which was going on 11 years before I was born, is too horrific to encompass. The numbers are just too large- 6,000,000 Jews died (4 million in camps and 2m by shooting or starvation). Around a million Roma may have been killed too but precision is difficult for that group. Homosexuals and Communists and those who oposed the Nazis died too in large numbers.

Listening to Martin Stern on TV today, I was struck by how compassionate and humane he was in recounting the suffering of other groups apart from the Jews. In particular, he mentioned that 3.3 million Soviet POWs were killed in Camps. almost 60% of all Soviet POWs in German occupied areas, in contrast to fewer than 5% of Allied POWs (non Jewish). Around 5% of the Soviet prisoners were Russian Jews but most were just seen as sub human Slavs.

It takes individual stories to make this inhuman event recognisable to us. These were committed by people just like us who live and walk amongst us. Those tendencies have not gone away and thye are made possible by people willing to promote or offer aid to those who want to demonise and dehumanise others. The resurgent intolerant neo-Nazi tendencies need a lot of felow travellers willing to contribute to the banality of evil until they become willing executioners of The Other. Every totalitarian regime that claims it has a monopoly on the truth is a danger to this tendency.

Martin Stern’s story is one that is very relevant today

As a longtime admirer of Forrest, I am starting to wonder if he will ever get back to his best. Seems to be just that bit slower and that bit less deadly with everything he does. Reminds me a bit of Sinclair’s last season when I was willing him to come good every time he appeared but the spark seemed to have gone.

    —-

Jury still out for me. He’s clearly nowhere near his best but could have had a goal last night but for an excellent block.

We’ll need more from him next Wednesday night. Genuine attacking threats down both sides will unsettle the huns.

  20. Huns sign Ivorian winger from Man U on 6 month loan. Apparently, Man U paid £19M for him from Atalanta. Don’t know whether to believe that or not.

  21. 30 odd according to sky, with all the issues that club have spending this on a laddie and not playing him, not likely, how long until wonderboy is up the road for a pittance.

Recent games seem to be following a pattern. We dominate, creating and missing lots of chances. The opposition create few chances but still manage to score.

The horrible Hertz had one shot on target last night, their offside goal, hard to see what could be done about that, it should not have stood, the linesman had a clear view and decided not to act, there was no need for VAR a clear and obvious ‘error’

  25. garygillespieshamstring on

I was not intending to be critical of James Forrest, a player whom I like and have praised on many occasions. I was trying to reflect where he stands now in the big picture as far as first team starts might go.

I think David Turnbull is possibly in the same boat, as the incoming midfield players might push him further down the pecking order from being double player of the year last year.

Standard of recruiting middle to front allied with the improvements in some players who had previously underperformed has made completion for starting slots pretty cutthroat when everyone is fit.

That is a good thing imo, and still time for more if the right people become available.

This will no doubt upset OOR ERNIE, but I had a bet on Celtic to win 2-1 last night @ 7/1.

I was cursing the concession of a penalty but it worked out in the end.

    Hail Hail.

  28. Great result last night

For 60 min we played really well composed and direct on the ball

If we can start to convert our chances we will be fine

The goal changes the context of the match revitalised Hertz and put us on the back foot

Admittedly we were tiring at the time but with justifiable reasons

Showed good commitment and resilience and saw it through

Must say new recruits in MF were excellent secure 3 points on sat and the 2nd will take care of itself
