It is a quirk of scheduling that between now and the World Cup break, that we have three games at Celtic Park and two at Fir Park Motherwell, the first coming during rush hour this evening. After a straightforward win over Hibs on Saturday, we embark on what looks like a challenging run of fixtures.
Four of the next five games are on the road: tonight’s League Cup game, Hearts on Saturday, after Shakhtar at home we play on Livingston’s plastic, before an evening in Madrid. Four wins and a draw may be enough!
If the players want a wakeup call on the dangers they face tonight, they need look no further back to the 2-1 win at home to Motherwell at the start of this month. Motherwell created little but managed to score before forcing Callum McGregor into a late foul, which he was red carded for. We can expect as much of a robust challenge tonight.
League Cup fixtures draw the eye less than those in the Champions League, or in a tight Premiership race, but that changes on the result. Win, and we have a Hampden occasion to look forward to, lose and we open up a whole new front. We have won six of the last eight League Cups. Prior to this period, it took us 38 years to win the same trophy six times, a period of frustration still not exercised.

Winning and the positive momentum it gives you is a great thing.
Non football post alert.

Apologies in advance for rant.
Symptomatic of modern institutional behaviour.
Standard response to revelation that they failed the fundamentals?
Bull5h1t spin and sophistry about tolerances, relative impact, systemic issues, IT systems, unforeseen human factors, small errors in the editorial or quality assurance process, lessons will be learned, robust plans now in place.
Blah, blah, blah
Good afternoon all.
Celtic to score 4 tonight against a team who won’t have the MIB to worry about.
SettleforaonenilthoughCSC
One of Celtics least acclaimed triumphs was one of the most incredible really.
Winning 4 consecutive Trebles.
Quite an astonishing feat.
Only 3 trebles in our history and then 4 in a row. Just as our biggest domestic challengers came into the reckoning.
It truly was a spectacular achievement in the context of history and our failure to win a treble when the Govan franchise team was in the lower echelons.
It must have really angered them to see such dominance on their top flight debut as a new entity.
The young goalkeeper Hazards fantastic performance in the pens played a huge role securing it for us.
En route back from Madrid a few of us are traveling to Seville to see him play for the new Finnish Champions at Betis in the Conference. Great to see him win player of year for Helsinki in a league winning team.
B78
I noticed he has been voted player of the year at Helsinki, great for his confidence and great experience for a young goalkeeper
Had a Linda Blair moment there😱😉
Burnley78
Yet some cynics moaned their way through all four trebles, and losing ten overshadowed Celtic’s unique double nine in a row.
Winning trebles could be seen as a measure of how absolutely brilliant Celtic were, or how dire the competition was.
If only there was some other metric by which to measure Celtic’s level of footballing ability.
Perhaps participation in some form of football tournament involving non domestic opposition.
That might provide a useful yardstick by which to measure Celtic’s true levels of achievement and would make comparisons with previous and future sides more realistic.
Ernie
You can’t get into Europe if you don’t do well domestically.
I’d rather watch us try to play Ange’s way and fail than not play the Celtic way
12 consecutive trophies, 4 leagues and 8 cup final wins.
we lost only 11 games in 4 league seasons.
A period of domestic dominance i doubt has ever happened anywhere in the world.
we dont celebrate it enough, too hung up on the loss of the covid 10 league.
Hoping for a free scoring Celtic VICTORY Tonight, to carry on the entertaining goal fest that we saw on Saturday.
Hopefully, Celtic supporters will be entertained by The Hoops. However, after the shocking ” Defending” by M’Wells Midfield and Defence at the Huns 1st goal on Sunday. I strongly suspect that the M’Well manager was NOT too impressed with his teams LACK of a Tackle going in on TILLMAN….and the reluctance to FOUL the Hun player, whilst he was on a 40/45 yard run, so I fully expect a change of attitude from M’Well players Tonight and that Celtic players may find themselves on the wrong end of many illegal challenges, that MAY or MAY NOT go unpunished by the Referee tonight ( Whoever he is ? )
Perhaps I am being UNDULY concerned about the safety and welfare of the Celtic players, of scenario’s that MAY NOT occur Tonight……I obviously want a Celtic Victory, but I dont want any further injuries to Celtic players, due to M’Well players TRYING to IMPRESS their Manager and Fans.
I MUST EXPECT that the M’Well manager had some strong words to say to many of his players, after the Huns game on Sunday, and I just hope that The REF comes down strongly on any ROBUST/ILLEGAL Challenges from the first whistle.
Maybe I am too overly concerned….I will soon find out ?
HH.
I would argue that the Quadruple Treble, was/is a bigger achievement than 9IAR

Is there an agreed definition of what ‘playing the Celtic way’ actually means?
And is Angeball on all fours with it?
As an example, playing out from the back? Every. Single. Time.
I don’t recall that ever being how Celtic played.
Just back from the Time Capsule gym.
It’s like Stations of the Cross as I say a prayer at every piece of equipment – in the hope that I survive
MON Celtic….lets DAZZLE these M’Well Bassa’s Tonight !
HH.
Fred
Just imagine how BRRB feels faced with 14 pubs to visit
Ernie
I mean trying to be adventurous rather than being defensive
I agree that the ball should be played up the park when required but I have always blamed the defenders for putting keepers in a situation that they themselves could have dealt with initially
The Irish Cricket team BEAT The Scots…
I cant PRETEND to know much about Cricket….but ONE IRISH Bhoy scored 72 Runs off of just 32 Balls….thats pretty good isnt it ?
HH.
Big Jimmy at 1:14
Couldnt agree more.
It was as if Motherwell’s players stood aside to let Tillman run through.
Against Celtic they just about “gang tackle” our man on the ball.
I fully expect some “robust”play tonight.
Agree that the 4×3 eclipses either of the 9-i-a-Rs.
The opposition and games are more demanding than in our glory years. It’s a remarkable feat.
Let’s not forget, Celtic and Bayern are the only teams to win a true quadruple [ours in 1966-67 of course].
PS: If a farmer has a half-dead, female sheep in need of urgent medical help, should he take it to the Icy Ewe Ward ?
I hope that Celtic have 72 efforts at the M’Well goal Tonight….with 32 efforts finding the back of the Mudderwell Net.
I am a greedy so and so…I know that.
LOL
HH
Ernie…
“Perhaps participation in some form of football tournament involving non domestic opposition.”
or
Perhaps comparison with other countries domestic football tournaments ?
To win 4 trebles in a row was remarkable. The mental efforts never mind the physical efforts have to be applauded regardless of euro failures.
(and the running of the club must account for both)
Soz; shoulda said half-frozen, half dead.

————————–
Would be inclined to agree with you on that front. How many knock out games were won across 8 cup competitions? Quite remarkable.
Ernie
In the quadruple treble we needed to win 8 cups – far from easy given everyone has a punchers chance especially at home.

Celtic don’t play out from the back every single time. But if Hart’s two clearances up the park on Saturday weren’t included in Sportscene highlights you wouldn’t know that.
Aipple
You beat me to it
The league Cup is a much devalued and perhaps outdated tournament. For a team like Celtic it’s main value is the first part of a treble and another stat. ( And a good cup final day out )
I understand winning is a good habit and momentum builds confidence, but surely the main function of the league Cup is to experiment and promote youth.. This is the forum to tweak Angeball with experimentation, rotation and development.
I vividly remember Arsenal playing youth until the final. I have no issue with that philosophy.
Our football calendar is so crowded we have little opportunity for change in a competitive environment. We dropped points at Paisley by implementing change in a more valuable competition and look at the outcry.
I do not buy into the fear of potentially letting the huns win a cup should determine our strategy.
Our focus remains Europe and the mechanism for getting there, ie the league.
Use the league Cup as a building block for our requirement.
If we cannot be bold and evaluate what we have on our books in the League Cup. Then where ?????
HH, the journey continues.
Liz Truss at PMQ Today…She CLEARLY was RATTLED at times as she SLAMMED her notes down at the Dispatch Box, on at least a couple of occasions.
Very FUNNY to watch.

To me Angeball is not synonymous with playing the Celtic way. It’s too doctrinaire in its mono style approach, lacks variation and doesn’t, or can’t, adjust itself to reflect how the opposition are playing, and suppresses players’ individuality for team uniformity.
I don’t know if the inflexibility is due to naivety, intransigence or insecurity but I just don’t think it’s going to work in Europe. Fine for the Scottish league though, and maybe that’s all that can be hoped for.
I think JOE HART should SHOOT more often !

Do you regularly actually attend any games love at Celtic Park / Parkhead ?
Have you been to many since Ange became the manager ?
Bada Bing / St Stivs
Totally agree re merit of Quad Treble.
That final piece on the jigsaw was so belittled. It never got the acclaim it deserved.
Can you imagine if a young inexperienced keeper saved 2 pens v Hearts in the first Cup Final of the Quadruple ?
