League reconstruction will soon look like a fantasy

287

The bun fight in Scottish football, where Partick Thistle have taken counsel opinion and, along with other bottom of the table clubs, threaten legal action if the season is brought to a halt without them being saved from the drop, looks impossible to settle soon.

Hearts and Thistle hope for more than a commitment to discuss the league reconstruction change that will save them from the consequences of being so poor this season.  Both are set to go to court, if necessary, which, I suppose, is an alternative to using your superior financial muscle to outperform smaller clubs.  As things stand, the league will wait until it is safe, then resume, which may delay the start of next season.

There are various event horizons between now and then.  Without football, a cash crunch lies ahead for every club.  For some, that is likely to be a matter of weeks.  Most Scottish clubs will run out of money and available funding by summer.  Celtic can afford to sit tight, as can Partick Thistle – if Christine Weir is prepared to make good any shortfall.

Whatever prize money or loans the SPFL can issue is important but it will not change the bigger picture for the majority of clubs in the top flight.  There, only Celtic have the reserves or funders on the board, to see this crisis out.  The immediate worry for most is to survive three or four months without income, before they can issue season ticket renewals.

Clubs have yet to receive guidance on when attendance at sporting events will be permitted.  When that arrives, talk about league reconstruction, with more mouths to feed in the top flight and throughout, will seem like a fantasy.

There will be significantly less money in Scottish football going forward, we will be able to support fewer full time clubs and if resources are not concentrated within a smaller pool, their dilution through an expanded league will lead to many clubs withering on the vine.

We should sit tight and let the various losers squabble.

  2. Season 67/ 68. OK. Two points for a win.

Celtic were by far the better side but had to rely on the huns drawing away at Morton to win the league.

The huns lost the league without losing a game .

    not true,

rangers lost a game, celtic lost a game.

celtic won the league by 2 points,

if huns had beat morton celtic would still have won the league , massive goal average and goal difference,

    Thanks for that.

You`re right .I was looking at the away results .The huns lost one game.

This is how tight it was :

” Meanwhile, over at Rugby Park, Rangers had beaten Killie and happy Rangers fans had invaded Rugby park in celebration of Celtic’s perceived draw at Parkhead. The news eventually filtered through on the radio of Lennox’s late goal which had left the Rangers followers absolutely devastated. It then materialised that Celtic won their final fixture against Dunfermline at East End Park, ten days later, and the Bhoys were now well on their way to nine in a row. ”

The point I was making however , remains valid .

I would rather play them four times in a season , however distasteful that might be , than rely on others to put up a fight against them .

That way , the ball remains in our court and the league in our hands .

If they die, they die.But I don’t think that will be allowed to happen.

I’ve no problem with them surviving in what ever form as long as they continue to struggle for air

  11. I hope we get back and finish this season on the pitch. If not, we’ve earned this league title and no amount of hun tears will alter the fact we were cruising while their wheels came off.

What a new season we could have the other side of the summer – two Scottish cups up for grabs and the all important ten.

  12. Fairhill Bhoy

`….as long as they continue to struggle for air`

Scotland being Scotland, eventually, they wouldn`t `struggle for air`. Apart from the customary help they receive, the size of their fan base would ensure that a time would come when they would be challenging us.

I expect the SPFL will add new clear cut rules about early closure of season in case a similar situation arises in the future and avoids another ludicrous voting shambles

    —-

From my understanding the rules are already there and they were followed this time round.

Haven`t recent (!) results shown that many teams take points off Sevco??

    Can`t argue with that.

However , how long will that be the case ?

Never more dangerous than when they`re cornered .

What does that remind you of ?

At the end of the day , one loss against the huns could lose us the league.

    No thanks.

    ——–

The new huns are an irrelevance, an international laughing stock. They have never gotten within 10 points of us since their reincarnation. Why give them credence?

Thing is we may have to reconstruct the league next season anyway, so always worth discussion, and though critical I understand why Celtic are focused on this season. UEFA due to meet next week, and hopefully with something useful to say, though Merkel and Macron may see things differently.

Do you imagine for one moment that league reconstruction will be performed without some form of ulterior motive at play ?

If so , you`re more trusting than me .

    Have you BLEEP!

  21. macjay1

You mean like the reconstruction that took place back in July 2013?

Cannot imagine there were any ulterior motives there.

  22. I think regardless of League reconsruction, we will still have to play the Huns 4 times a season.

The obvious model would be three 14 team Leagues. Play everyone home & away & then a top 6 & bottom 8 split.

It would be a 36 game season for top teams & 40 for the bottom 8.

However the top teams would be more likely to be involved in European games & Cup games.

You could also split it to 2 sevens giving everyone 38 League games same as present. The odd number would be a small bit of a nuisance but with midweek games etc , it could be managed.

    You`re right.

In the meantime , all we can do is speculate.

However , I wouldn`t trust the powers that be to change anything in a way which would not be against the interests of Celtic .

This may well be used to provide the opportunity they need to prevent TIAR.

Caution is all I would wish .
