LEAGUE REVAMP GETS BOOT

THERE will be NO Premiership league reconstruction, the SPFL have confirmed.

There had been plans for discussions concerning a revamp following reports some club bosses wanted Scotland’s top 42 teams to consider various forms of reshaping the leagues.

One idea was a proposal for a reduced top flight of 10 teams with no mid-winter split.

That idea looked doomed before it got off the ground when it quickly emerged it would be highly unlikely to get the 11 of 12 votes it would require.

CHAMPIONS AGAIN….Callum McGregor and his triumphant team-mates celebrate Celtic’s fourth successive title win at Tannadice.

St Johnstone owner Adam Webb was one of the first to state he was against the proposals and insisted the possibility of a 10-team Premiership would be “a big mistake.”

The SPFL’s Competitions Working Group met yesterday to discuss the possibility of a shake-up and the SPFL announced any revamp to the top division is now off the table.

However, the door has been left open for changes to be made to the three divisions below.

The SPFL statement, as reported in the Scottish Sun, reported: “The SPFL’s Competitions Working Group met on 29 April to discuss the possibility of league restructuring.

“It was agreed that there was no reasonable prospect of achieving consensus around a new format for the William Hill Premiership.

“There was, however, broad agreement around potential changes to the William Hill Championship, League 1 and League 2.

“These will be worked up with a view to conducting a consultation with clubs and other stakeholders.”

Celtic, of course, have just sealed their fourth successive Premiership title following their 5-0 win over Dundee United at Tannadice at the weekend.

Flag Day is due for Parkhead on Saturday May 17 when St Mirren are the visitors.
