Under the current rules, the Dundee United penalty on Saturday was a correct decision, as was the yellow card to Alexandro Bernabei. If your arm is away from your body and the ball hits it, a foul is committed. If this happens inside the box with VAR in attendance, this should lead to a penalty. Outside the box, VAR will seldom intervene, so ridiculous examples of the genre, like Alexandro’s on Saturday, are less likely to be punished. Fifa and VAR have inverted the ‘Outside the box it’s a foul all day’ rule.
The yellow card was also correct, if the arm stops an attempt at goal, a caution should be issued. Taken in total, these rules will lead to game being decided by a high proportion of random events inside the penalty area. Our experience in Madrid last week, where despite a good early showing, we were out of the contest due to penalties that would not have met the required criteria a few years ago, will happen again.
Defenders will also face increased jeopardy when on a yellow card. Previously, they could make sure they did not get involved in an incident that would lead to a second yellow, but there is little can be done to prevent a ball changing direction towards you and hitting an arm when you are jumping, landing or twisting your body.
Corner kicks and long balls into the box will become more dangerous than ever before. We will see the ridiculous scenario, where defenders jump and move around the box with their arms straight down, or behind their back, while attackers have the freedom to leverage their arms. Hopefully the World Cup will be determined by such an event, ushering in a rapid rethink.
Yesterday, according to the referee, already-booked Hearts keeper, Craig Gordon, fouled Motherwell’s Louis Molt, who was clean through with only the keeper to beat. The referee failed to show Craig a second yellow card. I am not convinced it was a penalty kick in the first place, but if it was, not sending Craig off goes against the rules. We need referees and VAR observers who can make better decisions, but as a Celtic fan, you have known that for generations! *(not mentioning our visit to Tynecastle).
It was a great weekend that again proved how football often pivots on fine margins. Seven points is a huge advantage, provides Celtic with breathing space and puts pressure on the also-rans who are now besieged. Two years ago, it was Celtic and Neil Lennon in the spotlight. It’s easier to look in from the outside and see the clear and obvious mistakes that happen when things are not going your way. We’ll explore this tomorrow.

Ernie, I could see the point in penalising Bobo Balde for the superman style leap in the champions league was making his body bigger as he attacked the ball, however on Saturday our man was not attempting to make his body bigger to block the ball as he clearly had no idea where the ball was or where his arm was in relation to the flight of the ball.
He was booked for being hit with a ball. Another unfortunate booking an we were down to ten men. Maybe they should count the accidental yellow card for points being totted up towards a suspension but not count it as one of a pair for ordering off purposes.
Hope this works. Fabulous effort over in Melbourne for Ange’s homecoming.

Var will be used to disadvantage Celtic. We play to a different set of rules than every other team. Before Var we had 4 cheating officials to deal with and now we have 5.
7 points clear despite all the cheating so very well done to Ange and the team. Let’s hammer sevco into the ground.
VAR is spoiling football for the punters at the game , makes it more ‘interesting’ if your sat at home or if your try to flog football tv rights around the world.
It needs to be severely restricted right now to goal line , offsides (if goal scored) and a punch up behind the refs back
Team for Wednesday;
Joe,Tank, CCV, St Moritz, Greg, Reo, Matt, Haksa, Aaron, Gio, Jota.
If officials are implementing the articles VAR rule above then if I was an attacking player in the box at a corner, I wouldn’t bother attempting to head towards the goal. No merely head the ball to the back of any defender and you’ll have a good chance of handball because the defender can’t see it coming😱😵
Football is an athletic , high tempo activity , where body movement dictates arm movement without a player having to actively think about it . The only exception to this would be a deliberate block with the arm which should be fairly easy to spot (Tynecastle).
As things stand , we might as well sack our coaches and employ Micheal Flatley to drill our defenders .
In years to come, the younger generation will regard everything that comes with VAR as normal. Games lasting 100mins and more, also normal. Those of us brought up on the hand-to-ball (penalty) and ball-to-hand (no penalty) rule, will never really get to grips this natural/unnatural body shape stuff. The current rules appear to have been made by people who have never played the game at any sort of level.
Our normally placid manager has been quite animated on the touchline since we welcomed VAR to our league. Just imagine if we had this technology 50 years ago with Bobby Davidson the ref and JPR Gordon in the VAR studio.
Now clear green water at the top of the league. Much of that down to the strategies adopted by Martindale and Davidson. They both know the limitations of their players so set up their stalls accordingly. And their teams results fair made us happy.
Perhaps if Ange realised the limitations of his players then it would be Celtic facing Stade Rennais in the next round of the Europa and not Shakhtar.

I’d rather the law just stated that the hand ball has to be intentional and just leave it at that.
They’ve (unintentionally) tied themselves up in knots trying to clarify what ‘deliberate’ or ‘intentional’ means, but only succeeded in creating more confusion and doubt.
VAR has of course made the whole thing worse by adding delay and frustration into the mix.

😂😂
We are getting to the stage where teams will just run up to the box and batter / aim the ball at the nearest defender in the hope that VAR will spot a hand ball … at our defensive end of the pitch , a penalty ; at our attacking end , arm in normal position no penalty.
The Italians in the 60s 70s used to try booting the ball off you and screaming for a pen , now it’s in the rules … incredulio….
A ref going to a screen and awarding VAR pen against the Huns at Ipox will only happen if the Hun are 3-0 up , never in a million years for an equaliser .
Cheating put and simple in plain sight

Take your point , though for the football ‘fans’ who consume soccer instead of football at home I suspect it adds to the ‘fun’ ; although football is fun ; part of it is it needs to be continuous and var is slowing the game down

Good news (I hope) Bhoys. My lawyer cousin is acting for Abada, CCV AND Ange regarding house purchase in Glasgow. Long commute for Ange to Southampton!?😊

Quick quiz question- what reason do Celtic fans have for being grateful to Vladan Milojević?

Correct !
I said it already yesterday. We’re in and around the opposition box at least 10 times more than our opponents. Shoot on sight every time, even if a defender is blocking. We’ll get stacks of penalties.

Could you be more of a pompous dick?
When I was watching game and saw reruns of incident, I did think the arm sticking out might have justified penalty, In the old days it used to be a penalty for a deliberate hand ball but those days are gone.
It was obviously accidental , he had his back to ball so couldn’t see it coming but that apparently doesn’t matte any more,
I find ex Ref Dermot Gallagher fair in his analysis, He took our side on the penalty not given against Hearts but this time said the Ref was correct.

Handball in the box will give Tavernier the Ballon D’Or.
Laughed out loud at that 😂
ERNIE LYNCH on 7TH NOVEMBER 2022 1:55 PM
Wasnt intent part of the rule when Maloney was penalised against Man United when it was fired at him from a free kick?
Intent is also very hard to prove, who in their right mind would intend to handle the ball in the penalty box if it wasnt going in?
I’m sure Ernie could be a lot more pompous without even trying ,😜 but he might have a point . Unless of course that all concerned gave permission for their business to be announced on tinternet blogs ?
Celtic WIFE….waiting for Hubby to arrive home after the Game.,….
WIFE ” Where have you been your over an hour late, and your dinners in the Dug” ?
Celtic Hubby, ” Sorry Darlin, it wasn’t my fault it was VAR’s fault”.
WIFE, ” Who the Feck is VAR….another wan of your new Pals in the Pub” ?
Hubby ” No Dear, there was TEN Stoppages for VAR CHECKS during the Game, and that made me MISS my scheduled Train/Bus hame, as each VAR Check lasted at least Three Minutes, and I had to wait some time for the NEXT Train/Bus Hame”
WIFE ” A likely story, where does this VAR live, whats his real name ? I will give him a piece of my mind when I see him”.
Hubby ” No my Dear, you don’t understand……..OH Feck it….whats the use” ?

Liverpool put up for sale.
Some heavy losses, an increase in the cost of servicing debt, and the prospect of having to slug it out with two gulf state clubs with limitless money seems to have done it for Fenway.
It’s probably coincidence but today Man City announced the second highest revenues ever in England.

That was eerily familiar to my conversation with Mrs BRRB on Saturday night. Then everything went dark.
A few weeks back I read somewhere about a proposal to change football timing like in basketball or American football. When the ball is out of play or the game is stopped for injuries etc then so too is the clock.
Official game time becomes an hour.
The article was highlighting the fact that in top level games, actual game time was averaging around 50 mins due to loads of time wasting.
The idea was there would be little point in time wasting, so an end to the rolling around been shot by a sniper so bring on the stretcher only to rise from the dead once on the sidelines theatrics.
On the plus side, a fast flowing game between two honest teams could be over a bit earlier than usual.

You made that up. Nathan Jones is a song by The Supremes. 😂
Souness on Talksport earlier.
I was the manager of the most Protestant and royalist club in Britain, at Glasgow Rangers, I respect McCleans right not to wear a poppy, it is his call, and his family should not be subject to threats, however he should have thought about that earlier when he started out on this (eh), and being from Londonderry , or Derry as some people refer to it, he might have family or friends who were affected back in the day, but the UK didnt get everything right there, and that thing that happened , that was one of those moments
A moment it was, 14 deaths and another 12 with gunshot wounds.
A moment.

I’ve been advocating 60mins ball In play for ages. What it wouldn’t stop is constant disruption but overall a good thing.
The answer to my quiz question earlier:-
Vladan Milojević was the guy that AEK Athens appointed in preference to Ange when he was in for the job. Vlad got sacked after 4 months- the biggest Greek misjudgement since Icarus
VAR
FIFA/IFAB VAR Protocol
1. Principles
The VAR protocol, as far as possible, conforms to the principles and philosophy of
the Laws of the Game.
The use of video assistant referees (VARs) is only permitted where the
match/competition organiser has fulfilled all the Implementation Assistance and
Approval Programme (IAAP) requirements as set out in FIFA’s IAAP documents,
and has received written permission from FIFA.
The use of VARs in football matches is based on a number of principles, all of
which must apply in every match using VARs.
1. A video assistant referee (VAR) is a match official, with independent access
to match footage, who may assist the referee only in the event of a ‘clear
and obvious error’ or ‘serious missed incident’ in relation to:
a. Goal/no goal
b. Penalty/no penalty
c. Direct red card (not second yellow card/caution)
d. Mistaken identity (when the referee cautions or sends off the wrong
player of the offending team)
2. The referee must always make a decision, i.e. the referee is not permitted
to give ‘no decision’ and then use the VAR to make the decision; a decision
to allow play to continue after an alleged offence can be reviewed.
3. The original decision given by the referee will not be changed unless the
video review clearly shows that the decision was a ‘clear and obvious error’.
4. Only the referee can initiate a ‘review’; the VAR (and other match officials)
can only recommend a ‘review’ to the referee.
5. The final decision is always taken by the referee, either based on
information from the VAR or after the referee has undertaken an ‘on-field
review’ (OFR).
6. There is no time limit for the review process as accuracy is more important
than speed.
7. The players and team officials must not surround the referee or attempt to
influence if a decision is reviewed, the review process or the final decision.
8. The referee must remain ‘visible’ during the review process to ensure
transparency.
9. If play continues after an incident which is then reviewed, any disciplinary
action taken/required during the post-incident period is not cancelled, even
if the original decision is changed (except a caution/sending-off for stopping
or interfering with a promising attack or DOGSO).
10. If play has stopped and been restarted, the referee may not undertake a
‘review’ except for a case of mistaken identity or for a potential sending-off
offence relating to violent conduct, spitting, biting or extremely offensive,
insulting and/or abusive action(s).
