Under the current rules, the Dundee United penalty on Saturday was a correct decision, as was the yellow card to Alexandro Bernabei. If your arm is away from your body and the ball hits it, a foul is committed. If this happens inside the box with VAR in attendance, this should lead to a penalty. Outside the box, VAR will seldom intervene, so ridiculous examples of the genre, like Alexandro’s on Saturday, are less likely to be punished. Fifa and VAR have inverted the ‘Outside the box it’s a foul all day’ rule.
The yellow card was also correct, if the arm stops an attempt at goal, a caution should be issued. Taken in total, these rules will lead to game being decided by a high proportion of random events inside the penalty area. Our experience in Madrid last week, where despite a good early showing, we were out of the contest due to penalties that would not have met the required criteria a few years ago, will happen again.
Defenders will also face increased jeopardy when on a yellow card. Previously, they could make sure they did not get involved in an incident that would lead to a second yellow, but there is little can be done to prevent a ball changing direction towards you and hitting an arm when you are jumping, landing or twisting your body.
Corner kicks and long balls into the box will become more dangerous than ever before. We will see the ridiculous scenario, where defenders jump and move around the box with their arms straight down, or behind their back, while attackers have the freedom to leverage their arms. Hopefully the World Cup will be determined by such an event, ushering in a rapid rethink.
Yesterday, according to the referee, already-booked Hearts keeper, Craig Gordon, fouled Motherwell’s Louis Molt, who was clean through with only the keeper to beat. The referee failed to show Craig a second yellow card. I am not convinced it was a penalty kick in the first place, but if it was, not sending Craig off goes against the rules. We need referees and VAR observers who can make better decisions, but as a Celtic fan, you have known that for generations! *(not mentioning our visit to Tynecastle).
It was a great weekend that again proved how football often pivots on fine margins. Seven points is a huge advantage, provides Celtic with breathing space and puts pressure on the also-rans who are now besieged. Two years ago, it was Celtic and Neil Lennon in the spotlight. It’s easier to look in from the outside and see the clear and obvious mistakes that happen when things are not going your way. We’ll explore this tomorrow.

Sorry, I was away all day yesterday.
VAR is for and driven by TV/media. This in turn will lead to more rule changes to suit TV/media. This is the beginning and has happened to a degree already. The game is almost contactless, almost no tackles or defending allowed now in the name of more entertainment, a faster game and more goals. This may be true but making the game more attractive for TV/media is changing the game and in the end that’s about money. Fair enough, maybe. It’s professional football. He who pays the Piper calls the tune. The paying customer, at the gate/ season ticket, however, at the game is being slowly emasculated and left in the dark. We pay for the privilege of being extras in a TV cast. No one had a clue v Dundee Utd what had happened or what was going on. And why should we, we are lucky to have been allowed in? And anyway, the authorities would say if hot blooded fans knew the thinking of (honest) officials with VAR, there would be a riot. So that keeps it nice and cosy. And this is just the beginning. TV was in dreamland when there were no fans during COVID. Games could be played at almost any time of the day and no fans complaining about travel or losing wages. The crowd could be piped into the stadium and was according to some just as good as the real thing The handball rule in the box is to suit Var. It’s so obvious The idea was to take away interpretation so that the Var official could give a quick clear instruction. Now what’s not called a foul outside the box is reviewed endlessly when it’s in the box. The opposite of what was happening before. This is just the start. This may be altered again, again to suit VAR. VAR should have been serving the game. The game is serving VAR. It’s only a matter of time before VAR reviews are exploited by advertising and betting if not already and become essential to the fiances of the game. And so it will be embedded as essential and so it will go on.
I don’t like it!

I see that our old friends Racing Club and Boca Juniors shared 10 red cards between them in the Trophy of Champions in Argentina. I wonder how long the VAR took to confirm all of these.

Re the podcast – if Kenny Clarke can’t comment on particular incidents then why have him on – it’s a get out of jail card.

A puff piece and PR for them to ‘reassure everyone they are doing their very best…’ unfortunately for us and for most Scottish teams their best is no way near good enough.

Reminder that two Superbru predictions have to be in by tonight
Reading about the possibility of a ticket exchange scheme.
I would be delighted with that development as I would be able to get rid of my season ticket seat for games against sevco.
I did ask about the possibility of having these removed from my season ticket when sevco got promoted but was told that the only way was to give up my own seats and buy seats in an area of the ground that didn’t include thst fixture.
Really fed up reading about VAR.Its not only us that’s getting pumped by it.Some have to broaden their horizons.Every week, all over, their is massive controversy over ,penalties, sending offs. Its not as if we are not used to bad decisions. We know the hand ball rule is a farce, but it’s a RULE.The studs up assault for me was much more controversial than the penalty. At least the penalty was, going by the letter of the hand ball laws, correct.
The assault should have been made much more of an issue by even Ange.No amount of stupid laws covers such a tackle as that. The pic of the tackle on E-Tims Diary is horrific.
Anyway,on to Wednesday.Expecting another 3 or 4 goals.Maybe more.
Just again on VAR.The Referees in the EPL are all professionals.Does not stop ridiculous decisions every week.We have the worst Refs on the go,but when VAR is involved,it’s a straight toss up who is the worst.

You’ve hit the nail on the head there fella , they will use it to scrutinise every Celtic move . But why do we complain about the mib set up , the striped tie brigade sitting at the top table on Friday allow it to go on unchallenged . Maybe chairman lawell will make his voice heard cos he will be back . HH

Paul67 et al
Well VAR has certainly stimulated a fair bit of discussion. Reading between the lines it appears that Paul’s view accords with the Boards (no surprise there) that there have been some teething problems. Oh, and learn the rules. Art of War has shown us that the rules for implementing VAR, are probably more complicated than the original rules of Association from back in 1863. Fact is though VAR will not enhance our game, will not improve decision making, and will not help in interpreting rules which are already vague in their essence. And, unless I am mistaken, are not compulsory for Associations. Not to say there are no beneficiaries, there are. Cui Bono? The fraternal masonic order of referees in Scotland. Time to end the VAR experiment, and try a new one. Neutral referees. No?

‘the striped tie brigade sitting at the top table on Friday allow it to go on unchallenged’

Well if you extend that chain of logic is the support not also tainted by allowing the Board to go unchallenged?
The board won’t meaningfully challenge anything because it would have too any downsides for them.
And the support won’t meaningfully challenge the board because it would likewise have too many downsides for them.
