The major positive Brendan Rodgers brought to Celtic when he arrived in 2016 was the elevated level of professionalism he learned at Liverpool. Until then, Celtic were the biggest operation most of the football staff had worked in. Liverpool worked at a different level, which even Neil Lennon accepted when he returned in 2019. Standards have improved since he departed five years earlier.
The same was true when Ange Postecoglou arrived in 2021. Ange brought with him the City Football Group’s method of working, from recruitment to sports science. The bar was raised again, although some of that subsequently dropped off.
The game changes quickly. Even for the elites: a year without a league win and Manchester City have revised their football philosophy. The top coach in the game, with abundant money, has had to rethink everything.
As we discussed on Wednesday, decks have been cleared. Whoever comes in will help mould the football operation into a new shape. Where these influences come from is important. This is what Newco hoped to acquire when they appointed Danny Rohl, from his time at Bayern Munich and the Germany national team, although their flirtation with Steven Gerrard was bizarre. Rohl might be a rubbish manager, but he has seen elite operations up close and will try to bring some of that to Glasgow.

The same is clearly true at board room level. Our Executive team have only ever worked at one football club – Celtic. They’ve been promoted within and have brought in nothing new.

A modern organisation with modern processes must come from the board who then fill the positions to suit. Our guys by beating a dysfunctional Hun for the last 12 years are patting themselves in the back. There is a clear short to medium term risk that the seeds are already sown for a major drop off in performance over a sustained period.

A great opporchancity but a serious challenge.
Finding the right people from overseas won’t be easy, progressive clubs in Europe will have the pick of the young coaching talent, clubs like Brugge have pathways for their coaching staff and actively scout and develop their managers. Continental Europe is a huge market but football people move freely between countries that are much closer in geography and culture than Scotland is.
But we do have to do it, everyone at the football department needs to have the right sort of mindset and education from their training and working experience.

Bayern also appointed a 37 year old as their head coach last summer, he had a couple of seasons experience at Burnley and wasnt received well, but he was fourth or fifth choice as they couldn’t persuade “better” candidates to come
And he had learned from the best at the most progressive club in the world
