Learning from elites

482

The major positive Brendan Rodgers brought to Celtic when he arrived in 2016 was the elevated level of professionalism he learned at Liverpool.  Until then, Celtic were the biggest operation most of the football staff had worked in.  Liverpool worked at a different level, which even Neil Lennon accepted when he returned in 2019.  Standards have improved since he departed five years earlier.

The same was true when Ange Postecoglou arrived in 2021.  Ange brought with him the City Football Group’s method of working, from recruitment to sports science.  The bar was raised again, although some of that subsequently dropped off.

The game changes quickly.  Even for the elites: a year without a league win and Manchester City have revised their football philosophy.  The top coach in the game, with abundant money, has had to rethink everything.

As we discussed on Wednesday, decks have been cleared.  Whoever comes in will help mould the football operation into a new shape.  Where these influences come from is important.  This is what Newco hoped to acquire when they appointed Danny Rohl, from his time at Bayern Munich and the Germany national team, although their flirtation with Steven Gerrard was bizarre.  Rohl might be a rubbish manager, but he has seen elite operations up close and will try to bring some of that to Glasgow.

  1. Lionroars67 @ 3:59 pm,

You are right about Brendan Rodgers CV and as a student of coaching – he was at Chelsea as reserve Manager and who had great set up then.

Upon replacing BR at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp said: “Brendan did a really good job here… so we don’t have to show them how football works… there’s a good base here because of Brendan’s work.

It doesn’t matter who we get in and who they bring in if they are not fully supported in their objectives.

    Our principal shareholder stated recently…

“Celtic’s structure — where the manager oversees football, the Chief Executive manages operations, and the Board provides oversight — has served the club with great success for more than two decades.”

It seems a silo set up, very much lacking the structure to deliver coherent aims and objectives across the organisation.

It might suffice for an unambitious corporation with established revenue streams and compliance requirements but there is absoutely nothing for footballing vision, ambition or purpose.

In footballing terms it has a huge over reliance on a football manager – and we know how transient they are.

    Leader is lazy gaslighting nonsense

Club is lazy in looking for a messianic messiah to be recruited due to an absence of a structure befitting a modern progressive club, I think even God would think twice

Define and explain the recruitment dept at Celtic FC ? A puzzle wrapped in an enigma, no accountability

Radical change needed within club before we look for “the man”

Maybe he’s just happy to do what he’s told and keep daddy Desmond happy….

  6. A French manager it is then, personally my choice if it was to be a Frenchman would have been Zinedine Zidane, out of work and no compo to pay.

Seriously underwhelmed, hope he proves me wrong, but given that he only won 14 out of 34 games in the league this season and finished 7th, I think my doubts will be proven correct, expected from this shower of parasites who run the PLC.

But he will get my support obviously.

They got lucky with Ange, here’s hoping it happens again.

  9. onenightinlisbon on

Unfortunately the board make us extremely toxic. We will not attract a high calibre of manager due to this and the fact we play in what’s considered a footballing backwater.

Daddy Desmond, with his shocking tirade ensured we are even less appealing than previously.

If it is Nancy , I hope he’s done his homework on Celtic . It’ll be chalk and cheese after Columbus .

Then again , DD and his pet board might surprise us by building a background structure that gets the most out of the new guy . Not expecing it though . Could work with somebody like MO’N as sporting director?

No pre judgements, no predictions either way, the man has to be given a chance to see what he can do

I want him to succeed, no ifs or buts

    AI on Wilfred Nancy

Wilfried Nancy is a football manager known for his tactical approach, which emphasizes “relationist football,” prioritizing the dynamic relationships between players and creating a cohesive, attacking style. His analysis focuses on a high-intensity, forward-thinking game with a strong possession-based system, often using a flexible 3-4-2-1 formation with an emphasis on positional rotations. He is known for a quick and impactful management style that achieves quick success.

Key aspects of his analysis and philosophy

Relationist football: His philosophy centers on the interpersonal dynamics within the team, fostering creativity and mutual trust between coach and player, rather than a rigid, over-coached system.

Attacking style: His teams are known for their forward-thinking approach, with a focus on width, triangles, and line-breaking passes.

Possession-based: He implements a possession-dominant style, often using a 3-4-2-1 formation, though he frequently rotates positions to keep the team flexible.

Impusivity and creativity: Nancy’s style encourages impulsivity and creativity, a deliberate contrast to overly structured tactical systems.

Focus on brand over results: He prioritizes implementing his brand of football first, believing that results will follow.

Discipline and organization: His teams are described as very organized and disciplined, even with their attacking and possession-based approach.

    Career trajectory

Rapid rise: He had a rapid ascent to the top of professional management, becoming a head coach in 2021 and quickly winning titles.

Successful stints: He has achieved significant success in his relatively short managerial career, winning the MLS Cup with the Columbus Crew and the Canadian Championship with CF Montréal.

MLS Coach of the Year: He was named the MLS Coach of the Year in 2023, highlighting his impact and high regard in the league.

Trailblazer: He was the first Black head coach to win the MLS Cup, a significant achievement.

Wilfried Nancy is a highly regarded tactical and relational coach known for his progressive, possession-based “NancyBall” style of play. His coaching is defined by flexible formations, a focus on ball retention and movement, and a strong emphasis on player relationships. He achieved significant success in Major League Soccer (MLS), winning the MLS Cup with the Columbus Crew in 2023.

    Coaching philosophy and style

Positional play and “Relacionismo”: Nancy employs a modern “Relacionismo” approach, similar to Luis Enrique’s, that focuses on how players relate to each other in a specific sector of the field. This creates numerical advantages to outmaneuver opponents, rather than relying on a rigid formation.

Fluid 3-4-2-1 formation: While flexible, his preferred formation is a 3-4-2-1 system. This includes a high-pressing goalkeeper, ball-playing center-backs who push into advanced positions, and wing-backs that act as primary attackers.

Creative freedom within a structure: He is “extremely demanding with the structure” but gives players a lot of freedom within that system to make their own decisions. This encourages creativity and adaptability.

Emphasis on rhythm and timing: Nancy challenges his players to alter the tempo of a match, using passing to move opponents and create time advantages rather than simply moving the ball fast.

It will be fascinating watching his football philosophy being implemented

Bon chance to our French manager

  17. I’m torn. Part of me usually thinks “why can’t we scour Europe or the world for the next big thing like Brighton do and Sunderland have done rather than the predictable names that get bandied about?”

So when we get the young, progressive hipster appointment I’d feel bad complaining that I’d never heard of him.

For all our misgivings with recruitment, managerial appointments is something we get right more often than not.

  18. Nancy has been a manager for four years.

In his time at Montreal, he won the Canadian Championship – playing against 12 teams , 2 of which were part time clubs.

In his time at Crew, he won the MLS Cup.
