Learning from elites

482

The major positive Brendan Rodgers brought to Celtic when he arrived in 2016 was the elevated level of professionalism he learned at Liverpool.  Until then, Celtic were the biggest operation most of the football staff had worked in.  Liverpool worked at a different level, which even Neil Lennon accepted when he returned in 2019.  Standards have improved since he departed five years earlier.

The same was true when Ange Postecoglou arrived in 2021.  Ange brought with him the City Football Group’s method of working, from recruitment to sports science.  The bar was raised again, although some of that subsequently dropped off.

The game changes quickly.  Even for the elites: a year without a league win and Manchester City have revised their football philosophy.  The top coach in the game, with abundant money, has had to rethink everything.

As we discussed on Wednesday, decks have been cleared.  Whoever comes in will help mould the football operation into a new shape.  Where these influences come from is important.  This is what Newco hoped to acquire when they appointed Danny Rohl, from his time at Bayern Munich and the Germany national team, although their flirtation with Steven Gerrard was bizarre.  Rohl might be a rubbish manager, but he has seen elite operations up close and will try to bring some of that to Glasgow.

  1. So assuming it is the French guy who is responsible for the decision? What process was used?

Did Dermot get a tip from a golf pal?

  2. My opinion of the Celtic ladies, plummets even further.I watch CL women’s football,so nothing against women, but for us to have been pro for so long, and watch how poor they are.

    Waste of money now.Sadly.

  3. Or like Ange are we to believe he was on the list all along? I’m sure GM or B78 will be furiously developing a back story as we wait.

Nancy is a long term golf partner of Peter Lawell and Peter wanted him to replace Neil Francis but was over ruled by Dermot. Can you imagine how successful we would have been had that decision been the correct one? Damn.

  5. Turkeybhoy, exactly mate who knows? Certainly not those paying for it all. It won’t stop the rewriting of history though. Tom McL reckons Brendan wasn’t sacked 🤫

  6. Timmy7_noted @ 10:26 pm,

The connection seems to be Wilfried Nancy’s assistant – Kwame Ampadu who knows Dr Tisdale from his Exeter City days…

Obviously Paul Tisdale has made much more of an impact with the Celtic Board than we realised.

    Hail Hail

  7. So tisdale was the genius appointment by Peter?

Or maybe Peter’s boy? Somewhere along the line it’s a wonderful move by a Lawell.

  8. To be clear I have no idea what’s going on and tbh at the moment I couldn’t gaf. What I do know is that the supporters have not been taken into account on any decision being taken.

Looking forward to seeing the board in the buff at the agm and being lauded on their sartorial elegance.

  9. Timmy7_noted @ 10:49 pm,

Yes, the thing now is just to be patient.

It’s International break and by the time Celtic play again, we could have a new Manager and backroom team, Martin O’Neill may well have moved on, we will have had the AGM.

So things should be a lot clearer, if not a lot better…

  11. Tisdale was Rodgers pick to replace Mark Lawwell despite Lawwell having f recommended plenty to decent quality options for him to consider.

Tisdale was also friendly with Rodgers until he began acting the clown and behaving as DD alluded.

    Simple.

It’s handy for me as I sometimes get in well after the start of a gamd, so delayed live or even watching it live the next day is quite a good option.

  13. Copy and paste from some random Celtic website :

Relacionismo demands a club aligned behind the manager. That means recruitment supporting the style, departments communicating with each other, analysts and data teams feeding the right information, and a long-term plan underlining everything.

Celtic currently operate like a club that still believes intuition beats preparation.

Nancy will not tolerate scattergun recruitment, unclear chains of command, or departments working in isolation. His style needs modern infrastructure, and Celtic haven’t yet proven they can deliver that.

Crikey , it could mean that we actually sign players to play their natural position ( sort of Ange like without the crazy no defence aspect) and that the old thing about the team ( better than the sum of the parts) means that we don’t piss millions up the wall playing ghuys out of position or not playing them at all.

If this works for us it will be a strategic step change forward from the god manager and for DD to allow this , means he realised his previous mistakes , Executive change to follow , I’d expect.

  14. Aaa so if it all goes breasts north it’s obviously Brendan’s fault, you couldn’t make this up…..well some actually do….is this Tisdale who plays golf with Desmond, and knows the coach at Columbus Crew, the one deflection has started before he’s arrived at Glasgow Airport….

  15. I can’t imagine the board is just going to go pot luck on a manager….they’re starting have shareholders, accountants and fans to answer to….I’d imagine due diligence has been carried out on Wilfried and his back catalogue is dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s…there is no business on this earth that’s going to stab itself in the back just to upset people who’ve upset them. If it’s Wilfried let’s back him to the hilt….you never know….he actually could be the messiah…

  16. ADVERTISEMENT
  17. Sorry for the grammar….when I hold my epen in my hand and type at the same time…the epen whacks letters and I don’t realise…

  18. you get the sense we are going to enter a period of decline. The board is stale and has lost anything resembling leadership and forward thinking ambition. The lack of signings, the way we brought Rodgers back and failed to back him and the way the board is communicating with the fan base. It’s absolutely stinking! bad smells are a turn off.

The current Celtic situation with MON , Maloney and Fotheringam is working – the players have responded , the fans love the ball moving quickly , we have brought on some youth and got the best out of player who had been flat. WHY CHANGE THAT? Give them a window to improve the side – MON can attract good players.

Its a massive ask to bring in a new coach – ask the players to change style for a 3rd time AND manage a team on the brink of poor results (meaning our injury list WILL catch up with us soon). If Nancy or any other coach gets off to a terrible start , it’s very difficult to turn around, psychologically against the Scottish media and demanding public.

Keep as is – then we can go for the right manager.

  20. I only know about Wilfreid Nancy from what I can gleam from the Internet.

I must say it seems a very, very strange appointment if it transpires.

He may indeed turn out to be a decent manager but on the face of it his CV does not fit the profile of a big club with European aspiration.

Interesting tge plan was Martin staying in Lennoxtown and running the rule over the remaining players during the International break.

Instead he came back in London, reiterating the team needs a rebuild.

  27. If Nancy is the new manager, I assume he will only have taken the job with certain reassurances. He will not be coming to us to see his reputation trashed and sent home with his tail between his legs. Why would he do that? Not like he is desperate for a job or that working in the SPFL would be on an American coach’s bucket list. He will be coming because he believes it is a good move for him and for his career.

He will, I imagine. have agreed who his coaching team are, what analytical support he wants, the kinds of players he can sign, who he reports to and what he is and isn’t responsible for.

For me. the question is how much time he is given to get it right and get the players to adapt to his system.

Manchester United’s Amorim stated he would not change his tactical system despite mounting pressure and poor results, believing that a change in philosophy would undermine his authority with the players.

Will Nancy have a similar line in the sand? Will his system help or hinder us in Europe? Will it better suit the players we have?

An interesting journey awaits. I am quietly optimistic but realistic enough to know it could be a short-lived appt.

If Tisdale was a BR pick, do you not think that he would have gone with BR and the rest, unless the board like him which they obviously do given he is supposedly the man behind the new manager pick, but it will still be Brendans fault if it goes wrong, FFS you couldn’t make it up, but they do.

Every supporter out there will want who ever gets the job to succeed, but with all due respect to the man, he is NOT the best we could have hired.

Aye we have gone from the slow lane to the hard shoulder

Karrect. I was trying to get the same point across in my clumsy way last night. Successful- the board, unsuccessful- previous manager.

As long as we have the likes of Wilson, who hates the supporters, we’ll be forever having these discussions.

  33. A couple of my pals have gone the Irish passport route and I too would qualify but I don’t have any real affinity with Ireland so it seems strange to me. But that’s a discussion for another day.
