Learning from elites

482

The major positive Brendan Rodgers brought to Celtic when he arrived in 2016 was the elevated level of professionalism he learned at Liverpool.  Until then, Celtic were the biggest operation most of the football staff had worked in.  Liverpool worked at a different level, which even Neil Lennon accepted when he returned in 2019.  Standards have improved since he departed five years earlier.

The same was true when Ange Postecoglou arrived in 2021.  Ange brought with him the City Football Group’s method of working, from recruitment to sports science.  The bar was raised again, although some of that subsequently dropped off.

The game changes quickly.  Even for the elites: a year without a league win and Manchester City have revised their football philosophy.  The top coach in the game, with abundant money, has had to rethink everything.

As we discussed on Wednesday, decks have been cleared.  Whoever comes in will help mould the football operation into a new shape.  Where these influences come from is important.  This is what Newco hoped to acquire when they appointed Danny Rohl, from his time at Bayern Munich and the Germany national team, although their flirtation with Steven Gerrard was bizarre.  Rohl might be a rubbish manager, but he has seen elite operations up close and will try to bring some of that to Glasgow.

  1. Yes,we might have been able to recruit a manager that a lot of fans were expecting. In the past.

Managers are conected, like a grapevine. The internet,24 hour news.I watched the reporting of BR and Celtic on CNN.Word spreads.Hayen and Knutsen would be well aware of the BR fiasco.A manager who won 13 out of 15 trophies available, being forced into leaving by a Board living in the past. The insane letter from Desmond went viral. The supporters in open rebellion. If anyone thinks these managers,I include, the others like Mc Kenna, did not know these facts, they are deluded. Our Board were openly mocked for their actions during the window, for Gods sake.

So a top manager in a nice set up,secure, with a good reputation, would look at us and think,” “Yes,that looks like a good move”.Never was it on.Never.

No idea if Nancy will be a good or bad appointment – but surely looking towards a young “progressive” coach is a risk worth taking?

Nancy might not be the ideal candidate (as in nobody knows anything about him) – but he might be the best candidate available to Celtic, prepared to work in the SPL.

    If it is Nancy

Good luck to him and (and us) I wish him nothing but success

The question is – Why Nancy?

No doubt we will get the “He was always our first choice” “We have been monitoring him for a while” etc

and that may well be true

Every managerial appointment is a risk – but some are more of a risk than other

Ange was a big risk but that worked well

Brendan was less of a risk but internal politics scuppered that deal

If it is to be Nancy its a risk similar to Ange (we can but hope and pray for the same results)

IMHO The criteria of our search is not who will take us to the next level but more who will fit into our current Board set up

To exaggerate the point who is prepared to put up with us and our outdated ways

I hope Nancy and his Agent are asking some serious questions

Like who proposes players and who has final say on who buys them

I just get this sense of it’s your turn Mr Nancy and when you have had enough we will move on

    Nothing really changes

The reputational harm we’ve seen the board inflict on the club will make player and manager acquisitions very difficult for us.

Hopefully the days of handing over the website to Desmond will never be seen again.

Just for info both Brighton and Bournemouth have modern progressive forward planning Board’s

It’s why both teams are doing so well

And just to add the guy that owns Brighton has bought a major share in Hearts

An average manager in a brilliant set up will do well

A brilliant manager in a poor set up will not do so well

  7. On the subject of managers experience.A lot has been made of Nancy’s alleged inexperience, rightly or not.

One of the main contenders,a great many Celtic fans would have been delighted with,Nicky Haven,Brugge manager, was 3 years ago, managing in the Welsh league with Haverford W.est.

He then got the job as , Manager of the under 23s at Brugge, and only became the Brugge manager in 2024.

Not exactly a stellar career in management, but it shows you just never know.Write off nobody until you see what they can do.

  8. “Nancy will not tolerate scattergun recruitment, unclear chains of command, or departments working in isolation. His style needs modern infrastructure, and Celtic haven’t yet proven they can deliver that.”

We have proven we can – two and half years ago we weren’t having this discussion. We had a “modern” manager who was happy with all

the key words the new experts are taking about

It’s up to Nancy if he wants to work within the infrastructure we have at Celtic. He’d be a poor fit if he wants to change it, it won’t work if he does.

I’d imagine he’ll be confused at the thought of it. It’s not a normal or sensible way of operating. He’s not being brought in to carry on the fight with the board, but he’ll learn pretty quickly thats one of the unique pressures

We need two things from Celtic right now:

A manager who will put all his energies into getting the best out of the players he’s working with

A recruitment strategy and process that provides us with better players in the short medium and long term.

One significant concern would be that the guys managing Brighton and Bournemouth both had an indifferent spell before their teams hit a stride.

An initial dodgy spell is a luxury that many Celtic fans will not tolerate – that will be a genuine worry if Nancy gets the job. He might be well advised to work closely with MON and Shaun for a spell while bedding in.

I’ve realised something really strange, in the past day.

I’m an optimist, FFS and I never realised it😁 Either that or I’ve faced up to the reality that this boy will be the new manager or is it first team coach. He needs our full support, as if he’s the guy we all wanted. He’s taking over at a very difficult time, squad quality and depth, injuries, some who want to leave and our world class boardroom 😮. I’m looking forward to the AGM and I think I hope that they new boy won’t be in attendance. Hello hello we are the Nancy Boys 😉

  20. What specifically hace we learned as a club?

We spent 18 months signing Balikwisha who doesn’t look suited to the Scottish game at all, we didnt listen to BR on several occasions when discussing quality of player and it took MON 5 minutes to get three big wins with 11 goals scored. Data analysis blah blah blah.

Good managers find good players to suit THEIR system. You can’t have club signings or club styles as it can be easily overcome.

You criticised MON on these pages a few times over the last ten years Paul yet you seem to have overlooked that when praising him recently.

I said when BR left that the new man is largely irrelevant if the club is not run better. Clearly no real change is imminent.

A new manager of limited experience, coming to a much bigger job and for a much bigger salary ticks a few boxes in the “Yes man” category. A perfect fit for an absentee shareholder such as DD and a joke of a board.

    Bring on Friday.

  22. Watched Michael O’Neill’s “exciting” young team against Sovakia last night on BBC3 last night. They were very poor, lost 1-0, now between Slovaks and Germany as to who wins that group. Norn go into the playoffs against a Pot 1 team. The Republic did better beating Portugal the other day, but now have to beat Hungary away, no easy task, and no fallback play-off either. Scotland need to avoid defeat in Greece, (7.45) to have a chance of winning the group against Denmark in Glasgow midweek. Not sure how we’ll achieve that without Billy Gilmour in the team, but try we must. Have a play-off spot booked just in case.

  24. Hopefully what the approach for Wilfred indicates is a rejection of the ‘Billy big baws’ approach to running the club superbly executed by Brendan. I’m expecting more details to come out at the agm re the screw up in recruitment over the summer and Brendan will need to brace himself for more incoming.

Fingers crossed Wilfried can hit the ground running and we can start to resemble a tough , fast attacking outfit

  25. Pardon me if this was covered last night.

Did anyone watch the Rangers v Celtic Women’s match on Sky?

The Rangers captain Nicola Docherty was booked in the first half. In the second half she kicked the legs away from one of the Celtic players. It was even more of a yellow card than the one she was given. The Ref awarded a free kick to Celtic but – you’ve guessed it – didn’t give a second yellow. This was in the 62nd minute. I think it was 1-1 at the time. Rangers scored a late goal to win 3-2. If she had been ordered off it would have made a huge difference to the game. I’ve seen outrageous decisions given against our Women’s team before and referees just like the one in the East Kilbride v Celtic B the other night. Scottish football is rife with these people and it’s time Celtic did something about it.

I am an American Celtic fan. Therefore, with a foot in both worlds (American domestic football and lifelong fandom of a European club), my perspective might be a bit more balanced than most.

In the Celtic supporter camp, there is a broad range of sentiment. Some are very excited. Fresh face, bold choice, new tactics, etc. Some are convinced it will be a disaster. MLS is shite, football in America is shite, he’s not a “Celtic man” (meaning that he’s not a former player/coach/manager, nor is he a pasty-faced Paddy from Derry). Most feel a general sense of anxiety and cautious optimism. There is a pervasive line of thought amongst Celtic fans that the club is a bigger player on the world stage than it is – as if 1967 were yesterday and Jock Stein could emerge from the grave any moment to lead us back to glory. They are as deluded as the average Nebraska fan who relives the 96 Orange Bowl on a permanent loop.

For my part, I have been a massive advocate for Nancy’s appointment at Celtic ever since Ange left us. I thought Rodgers’s reappointment was short sighted, narrow of vision, and lacked ambition. He knew he would p1ss off, and I was right.

I have furthermore been an advocate of the idea that Celtic should mine MLS for managerial and playing talent. The league is far stronger top to bottom than the SPFL, but Celtic is a far bigger and more prestigious draw than any MLS club.

Sorry you’re losing your gaffer. Not sorry that it seems we’re getting him. Best of luck going forward.

  30. I remember back in the day when we were chasing, EDDIE HOWE, and more or less the same people told us every day, for 3 months that, EH will be here next week, just some loose ends to tie up etc, for 3 long agonizing months just after the club threw the 10 in a row season under the bus, and 60,000 season ticket holders financially demonstrated their ABSOLUTE SUPPORT OF THE PLC, fkn lol, and we ended up with Ange as our manager.

I don’t know who we are after as Celtic have not told us yet.

And given that the same posters feeding us dung for 3 months about EH’s IMMINENT arrival, are now feeding us about this new guy, because they read it on the fake news Celtic websites who all repeat the fake news, how do we actually know who is coming in?

Maybe the PLC will bring in a planted ERCHIE for Old Firm reasons knowing full well that 60,000 fans will just turn up next season again as they don’t have THE JUNGLE BALLS to boycott the PLC, and do their usual blaming everybody except themselves??????

And who’s fault would that be?

    Trolls?

Given the flavor of [THE MAN IN THE KNOW] Desmond’s utterly magnificent warts and all account of the SLIPPERY Rodgers [everybody did it except ME era] well vengeance against the tangerine throwing clown show might be the outcome?

I wouldn’t go as far as I am being a glass half full kinda bloke but I agree we must support yer man come what may, I just feel sorry for him already because of the “world class board” he has to answer to, maybes with a progressive forward thinking and planning board it would be different, but sadly nothing is gonna change with this lot in place, I still wonder why Dom McKay was fired so quick, was he too forward thinking and was about to drag us into reality.
