Learning from elites

482

The major positive Brendan Rodgers brought to Celtic when he arrived in 2016 was the elevated level of professionalism he learned at Liverpool.  Until then, Celtic were the biggest operation most of the football staff had worked in.  Liverpool worked at a different level, which even Neil Lennon accepted when he returned in 2019.  Standards have improved since he departed five years earlier.

The same was true when Ange Postecoglou arrived in 2021.  Ange brought with him the City Football Group’s method of working, from recruitment to sports science.  The bar was raised again, although some of that subsequently dropped off.

The game changes quickly.  Even for the elites: a year without a league win and Manchester City have revised their football philosophy.  The top coach in the game, with abundant money, has had to rethink everything.

As we discussed on Wednesday, decks have been cleared.  Whoever comes in will help mould the football operation into a new shape.  Where these influences come from is important.  This is what Newco hoped to acquire when they appointed Danny Rohl, from his time at Bayern Munich and the Germany national team, although their flirtation with Steven Gerrard was bizarre.  Rohl might be a rubbish manager, but he has seen elite operations up close and will try to bring some of that to Glasgow.

I met a good friend of Dom McKay’s at Haymarket station on the way to Hampden before our defeat to Aberdeen in last seasons SCF .

He was wearing a Liverpool shirt and was on his way down South .

He stated that he was a Celtic supporter and wished us luck in the final .

To prove he was McKay’s mate he showed us several personal photos of him and McKay from his mobile photo file .

He told us that McKay left because he wasn’t being given the autonomy to do his job ,that he was promised when he accepted the job .

That sounds about par for the course, can’t have anyone rocking the good ship Celtica.

It all points to trying to keep just ahead of the hun, as I have said numerous times, we have had chance after chance to rid ourselves of thems and have never once taken the chance, it’s gonna be the same old same old.

  3. Any opinions I have on Nancy are tempered by the admission that I slated Ange before he arrived as not Celtic quality.

“I still wonder why Dom McKay was fired so quick, was he too forward thinking and was about to drag us into reality.”

    ……

HH mhan hope all is well.

DOM McKAY was a PLC constructed psyop to get fans to buy season tickets as there was a groundswell opinion that ST’s sales were going to dramatically fall, if Lawwell was still in the building after his stewardship of the 10 in a row season just shipped to the Huns, for Old Firm reasons

So the word was that Lawwell had resigned and left Celtic.

    BUT.

As soon as word went out that the season tickets had sold out, DOM McKAY developed personal issues and would have to IMMEDIATELY leave Celtic!!!! lol

And hey presto, Lawwell re-entered the building as a non official guy, just there as PLC eye candy, and not involved in any decision making. lol

All seated era Celtic fans are utterly vulnerable to ANY levels of PLC pish.

    HH MHAN Take care.

This is from a Columbus crew fans forum

The majority of their fans think that Brother Wilfried will be a big loss.

    ….

TinyTim’s post is timely and well worth reading. The Columbus Crew fan makes several salient observations. One of which is that an MLS manager coming to Scotland has probably opted for a lower league.

Aye, you could be bang on with that, I know someone who works at the club, at the ground, and was told that Pedro still lords it like he always did, this was just after Dom left the building.

    Celtic40me,

The ” Recruitment strategy”is what we have been glaringly missing.

You must have missed Paul67 constantly banging on about our recruitment strategy and all the arguments in the comments section going back ten years or more.

  15. Who remembers the early days of CQN when we weren’t allowed to swear and if you did, your post was eventually deleted after several posters warned that children read the blog.

Even then, I and no doubt many others were sure that nobody under 40 went near this dear green place.

On that note, I was greetin in the cinema last night watching ‘I Swear’, the story of Scot John Davidson who famously had Tourettes.

NB. This is not a spoiler.

Film starts in modern day Holyrood Palace where John is to receive an MBE from the Queen. He’s shitting himself in case he says something bad.

Eventually he’s persuaded to go into the big hall where about a hundred people are seated in front of auld Lizzie.

As soon as he enters, he looks at the scene before him and shouts FUCK THE QUEEN.

    I totally lost it. 🤣

  16. ”Recruitment strategy”

Is that when those who like the manager reckons it’s him who signs the good players and the club don’t, or is it when the club sign the players….Oh Wait, it’s nothing to do with the club, it’s all down to the manager when it suits the narrative, we have NO strategy, that’s the problem, our board are efin useless at running a football club, end of, half decent at the PLC side of things, but even then they are wasting millions of OUR hard earned on a daily basis.

    18+% of our total.

  20. Let’s not forget Ange’s era coincided with the arrival of players who were significantly better than the spfhell.

No gonnae disparage Ange’s managerial tenure but how doe you separate the manager form the player?

  22. Tiny Tim interesting perspective from the US on Celtic, SPHell and deluded supporters. Not a comfortable mirror. The next manager will have a torrid time from the collective and others who prefer living in the past. If it is Nancy I am sure the club will give him what he needs to succeed in the medium term.
