Legends, history, £6k and tens of thousands of Celtic fans

1401

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 9-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour in Fife, yesterday.  The event, auctions and raffles leading up to it raised £6000, the bulk of which will go to the 1254125 appeal, while some will go to Clic Sargent, who help families with children with that dreadful disease.

Lisbon Lion, Willie Wallace, and his wife Olive, were fantastic guests, who enjoyed spending a day with 70 or so friends.  It doesn’t matter how far away Lisbon Lions live, you always find them the same way.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along, bid of the auctions or bought a raffle ticket, all in aid of people you will never know. Thank you from all of us to John, Kevin and John, for their stressful work in pulling the event together, for the ninth year!

125 years ago a handful of people, living in a community devastated by hunger, destitution and TB, but who could make a difference, decided they would make a difference.  As a result, Celtic was born.  Celtic is not just something to brighten up your weekends, it’s not purely there to build friendships or to create common-interests across the generations, it is a movement you are required participate in.

The clarion call to all Celtic fans this year is to do more than just put your hand in your pocket, the spirit which gave birth to the concept of Celtic will only survive if those who can get involved, inspire a fresh generation by doing so.

Go register for 1254125, and commit to doing something to raise £125.  It can be anything.  You can walk a 1888 meters, go to the barbers and get a baldy to celebrate the signing of Amido Balde, it doesn’t need to be as ambitious as the 150 brave souls who right this very moment are atop Ben Nevis about to undertake the world’s highest huddle.

If you believe in this club, don’t leave it to someone else to take care of what’s important.  The same goes for your season ticket.  It has been over a century since we have been as close to the founding spirit of our club, but the sporting dramas which inspire us all are not achieved by new strikers, they are the fruits of tens of thousands fans buying season tickets.

Go stake your claim on Celtic.

Well that’s a pretty amazing weekend over, with 127 folks climbing Ben Nevis to make a huge huddle and a couple of folks making a cycle from fort william

The body’s are tired today !

LOOKING for your help where possible to make some donations to the 125 4 125 cause

    Hello team

just after the Barcelona game a few of us took the pledge and took part in some events to support the 125 4 125 charity

Since then our aim is two fold

    1. To promote the charity and engage with at least one other member of the global Celtic family to do the same

    2. raise some money “1.25” “12.50” “125.00” every bit counts

With a few events still to come up,

We are hoping to maximise donations and would appreciate any donations towards 125 4 125 cause

We are attending the above. Planning a meet up in the afternoon in Hamilton for a few drinks then on to the races. All welcome. We were considering pre booking the tickets. If you fancy it, you’d be most welcome. Just shout up. We’ll pre book entry tickets, usually £18 or so, at the end of this week. Obviously you don’t need to pre book as it’s unlikely to sell out, but we will probably get a small discount for booking online.

    As I say, all welcome.

The last thing we want is a player in his last year with no plans to re-sign.

I don’t think players in that position are likely to try as hard for fear of injury.

Can you imagine Hoops less committed than he looked for most of this year so far?

Thank you for posting that beautiful piece of writing about Jimmy McGrory. My Dad loved Jimmy McGrory. I was brought up on tales of Jimmy’s prowess as a goal scorer and in particular of his heading ability. My Dad would often tell me how Jimmy could head a ball harder from the edge of a the box than many players could shoot and how he was often horizontal in mid air when his strong neck muscles flexed to bullet the ball into the net with his head.

Oh kind and loving St. Anthony, you whose heart was ever filled with human sympathy, one word from you and prayer shall be granted (mention request).

losing stuff….many moons ago my bro was walking when a guy ran quickly past him and as he did so, a fat envelope fell from either his pocket or from a bag he was carrying. My bro picked it up and it was stuffed with notes. He ran after the Guy and returned it. Turns out the guy was a bookie on his way to bank the money! Anyhow he didn’t even hand over the price of a pint to my brother. Not long after, my same brother was leaving paradise and found a watch on the teaching. It was inscribed”to Patrick on his21st”. Was from his gran if I recall correctly. My bro sent a letter to the Celtic view looking for the owner who coincidentally had written to the view asking if anyone had found it. They duly met up and Patrick bought my brother a meal as a thank you. I guess I should have learned a lesson way back then. Never trust a bookie… Tight sods give nothing away!

  25. only managed to dip in for brief moments over the weekend, busy busy, but now catching up on last nights stories ( The McGrory, one, and Tommy Devlins sleepover at Celtic Park are wonderful imagineering).

and then Charliebhoys from the heart memories his father,

making me feel all very Celtic about things.

yesterday dropping Mrs H , mother in law and daughter at Saint Enochs ……..

mrs H “what you going to do ?”

me “em, swing buy Glasgow Green and see if there is any games on …………..”

mrs H “you said fitba was finished ”

me ” och i will just wander about for a while ”

mrs H ” your gonny go to Celtic Park aint you ………………..

so, around 3pm, there i was in the car park, I dont know if its sad, but I like to get along to the park every close season, just to see whats going on. Nice day, decided to take a look around, very very busy , fathers day events in the lounges, the shop packed out, quite a few tourists in, american voices, german students, busy busy.

In years gone bye, i recall being the only person there, place locked up, taking a rest.

Now its a hive of activity, you can see what i think is a relaid pitch, through the big gates , a flock of pigeons on the grass. The noise of workers shouting, high up on the roof I think, dare i say it, in the middle of June

“there is a buzz about the place”

And then there are the statues, and the Tommy Burns plaque, adorned by a solitary scarf and picture, cant help but feel proud and humbled at the same time, a wee lump in my throat thinking of great goals, and that time on the pitch at hampden, “there and allways there”

Jimmy had some flowers at his feet, a family are lifing a little curly haired hooped toddler up to share the plinth with Mr Stein, Brother Walfred, Andrew, sitting in serenity, his area is fenced off as new paving is put down, i read the names, surely many would be the same as the Marist Brother new himself. A Corrigan perhaps, and a Devlin for sure.

I like to look around, think about what used to be here, map it on in my own head, the railway line which divided celtic end from main stand, the giant wall at the other side, the pools office, the president at the door, and that wee hatch inside, a glimpse of the Thomson Memorial , the orange seats !.

The school, och, well, time to move on.

I wonder to myself, when it was first built was the east end truelly the edge of the city ? From the Gorbals to Garngard to the Calton , How were quarter of a million people crammed into a few square miles.

What visionaries those early celtic men were, those who had the ideas, Mr Glass drive, and the irish men and woman, who made not one, but two, Celtic Parks.

If Andrew Kerins walked again with Tommy Devlin today , would he be amazed ? or not suprised at all, that once given the chance, the descendants of those people fed , would nowadays be climbing ben nevis in their hundreds and feeding kids the other side of the world.

Like I said, fathers day yesterday, Brother Walfrid, makes me feel all very Celtic about everything.

    Keep it Lit.
