Legia less appealing, Man City under-grad

1542

Surprised we got two in yesterday, as Manchester City under-grad, Jason Denayer, signed for a year-long loan last night.  The 19-year-old has yet to play first team football so is likely to be considered as backup at Celtic, though reports are promising.

Not surprised that Legia Warsaw have lodged an appeal to Uefa to be re-instated into the Champions League, they have to try everything possible.  It has not been confirmed what ground Legia have appealed on, however, at the weekend, Polish FA chief exec, Zbigniew Boniek, suggested an appeal would be made on two grounds:

That only one member of the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body was at the hearing to made the decision, and

That Legia were not given the chance to make a submission to the Body.

There are 10 members of the Disciplinary Body and rules state that decisions require the attendance of at least three, unless the case is “urgent”, when a decision can be taken by one member.  To defend their process, Uefa need to insist that the circumstances were urgent, probably citing the Champions League play-off draw, which was due to take place two hours later.

While the Disciplinary Body allow submissions to be made prior to a hearing, Article 34 authorises the Body to undertake a hearing without submissions and “in the absence of one or all of the parties”.

In the unlikely event Legia won an appeal on procedural grounds, a subsequent hearing, perhaps with more Disciplinary Body members in attendance, would take place, and would inevitably reach the same conclusion.

Article 21, paragraph 2, of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations state, “A match is declared forfeit if a player who has been suspended following a disciplinary decision participates in the match.”  There is no ambiguity or lateral for the Disciplinary Body to exercise a different reprimand.

Legia’s appeals can carry on all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but Celtic will not be involved in any future issues.  NK Maribor represent a vastly, vastly, greater risk to their Champions League aspirations.

I think some of our players got a wee shock when Ronny insisted on playing at af ast pace, as opposed to their own pace……the pace of games last season was frustrating for me …. Hopefully the players have now taken the change on board (before tomorrow night …!!!!)

  6. i wonder what is the basis of the claim that under NL the celtic team were unfit

is there a single solitary fact to back this up or is it just ….. fantasy

What is the basis of this claim, its a bit like “Ive got a good feeling about Ronni” statements that are going around. No real basis for that opinion either so far. It doesnt mean that the opinion is invalid, but what is the basis

That claim is compounded with folks saying the players have laid down their tools too. bewildering stuff, we sell our best players season after season then blame the ones who are left for being unfit when we get beat. If physical fitness was the sole characteritic for being a good player, Arnie and Mo Farah would be playing for Real Madrid

  7. Supporters lauding loan signings whilst ignoring the paucity of hard investment, well our expectations are being truly managed in a truly awesome manner.

We don’t have to worry about the Celtic strip shrinking to fit inferior players, the company will just buy (or borrow) smaller shirts and sporting pygmies to fill them.

If you were to use a nut-cracker on the board’s testicles which one of them (the board bhoys) would have the imagination to invent a plausible apologue (of the hugest whopper type) to justify our global quaking sporting ambition?

The SPL is the summit for our pigmy legends in their pre-shrunk Celtic strips. Maybe – when Ronnie is told he is sick of taking it on the chin and told to scurry, with haste, over the horizon (after he’s signed the ‘ I’ll always keep my gob shut ‘ clause) – maybe Snow White might fancy the gig.

    The only way is up.

    I pray.

  8. A worldwide plea to the football world, will someone please lend us a striker. Maybe we could do a deal with Legia, now that the’re out of the Champions League.

  9. Watch our players in pre match, or HT warm up and you will see why people question their fitness.

I don’t know who the guy is who does pre / HT warm ups , but IMHO there is a lack of respect for him

Also, I suspect Broony’s injury is from him trying to push himself too hard to impress new coach / lead by example, and his injury is caused by naivety.

I do agree, however for me the key word is ” good”

the player must be a good player to begin with. If he isnt a good quality player to begin with he is unlikely to improve much because he is a faster runner.

If for example wee Izzy added a yard of pace in very 50 yard run he made, how much more likely is he to be able to take the ball off the toe of Xavi or iniesta? probably not very much at all, IMO.

  14. Jeg er Ronny Delia on

I’m sure others will have a go at Delia for this, but it seems like sensible stuff to me. I’d rather a few “try before you buy ” loans than another MAF.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila will remain prudent in ‘hard market’

Manager Ronny Deila aims to make at least one more signing before Celtic’s Champions League play-off.

However, the Norwegian has been frustrated in his pursuit of fresh faces, revealing that the club had missed out on Haiti star Jeff Louis.

“I really hope we can get a player to make a difference in the games against Maribor,” Deila said, looking ahead to the first leg in Slovenia on 20 August.

“It’s a hard market but if the right player is there, money is available.”

Deila added two loan players to his squad this week, taking defender Jason Denayer from Manchester City and Aston Villa winger Aleksandar Tonev.

He had previously brought in forward Jo Inge Berget from Cardiff, again on loan, and out-of-contract goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

The Scottish champions sold keeper Fraser Forster to Southampton at the weekend and Deila would like to spend some of the £10m fee.

He said Nancy had accepted a bid for attacking midfielder Louis but the player had instead opted to join Standard Liege in Belgium.

“I have money to spend and that is the most important thing,” Deila added.

    Jeff Louis

Celtic agreed a fee for Jeff Louis but the player preferred a move to Belgium

“But if we buy a player for £10m what do you think the salary of that player will be? It will be five or six times more than you get at Celtic.

“If we pay that, what will happen to the other players? You have to see the big picture. It is not about the fee, it is about salaries.

“The money from television in the English Premier League is huge. Celtic is unbelievably huge but the money is not so huge.

“It has to be driven in a good way and Celtic have done that for many years and will continue to do so.”

Deila did not rule out any more summer sales but insisted defender Virgil van Dijk wants to stay at Celtic Park and stressed that he was pleased with the quality of players he has inherited.

“There is still a long time to go in the transfer market,” he said.

“In my head I know what I want. We’ll see if it’s possible. If I get it, I’ll be happy and I think the fans will be too.

“But it’s important to keep consistency and do things slowly. You can’t do it all in one window. It’s important not to lose your head.”

IN Norway, they call him “Super Ronny”. When news of his prime candidacy for the Celtic manager’s job reached Scotland yesterday, the initial reaction was “Ronny Who?”.

It’s fair to say that, even among the most avid students of European football, Ronny Deila is something of an unknown quantity.

Celtic, however, have certainly done their homework on the 38-year-old who has suddenly emerged as the leading contender to succeed Neil Lennon in the highest-profile job in Scottish football.

They have been aware of his burgeoning reputation as one of the brightest young coaches on the continent since they began scouting his Stromsgodset team more than a year ago.

The dossier they compiled on the side crowned Norwegian champions in 2013 led to the signing of midfielder Stefan
Johansen in January this year. Now it looks as if Celtic are going to follow that up by recruiting the man who transformed the Drammen club from relegation fodder to Champions League qualifying contenders.

Deila, a qualified teacher, has worked uncomplainingly on a limited budget at Stromsgodset, recruiting shrewdly and combining young talent with a smattering of more experienced professionals. His biggest strengths are said to be his man-management skills and ability to communicate his tactical philosophy to his players.

He is committed to an attacking style of play, built around pace and sharp passing, with a favoured 4-3-3 formation. Deila has drawn comparisons in recent seasons with Jurgen Klopp, the often eccentric but highly successful Borussia Dortmund manager whose own football philosophy has earned so many admirers.

In his own quest for self improvement since becoming Stromsgodset coach six years ago, Deila has visited several European clubs, including Dortmund, to study their coaching and training methods.

“I have great respect for Klopp’s achievements at Dortmund,” said Deila in a Norwegian newspaper interview last year. “There are so many questions to ask him. I like to know more about the way they develop their players so that they are ready to star at top international level so quickly. The comparison with Klopp is a huge recognition of my work at Stromsgodset and it is nice to have it put into such a context, but I do not feel like Klopp yet. Our style of play is very similar to that of Dortmund, but we must remember that we do it at a very different level.”

Deila, who has also spent time with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers as well as visiting Manchester City, Barcelona, Ajax and Rennes to satisfy his desire for personal and professional development, would certainly embrace Celtic’s policy of sourcing relatively unknown talent, maximising their potential and selling them on for a
significant profit.

Born in the southern Norwegian town of Porsgrunn, Deila began his playing career with his local lower tier club Uraedd. He was spotted by top-flight outfit Odd Grenland and soon became a mainstay of their defence, following his first-team breakthrough in 1993.

Deila was capped nine times for the Norwegian under-17 side and then made two appearances for the under-21s in 1996, both of them on a tour of the USA, but never represented his country at senior level.

The highlight of his playing career was the Norwegian Cup Final of 2000 when he played in the Odd Grenland side which defeated Viking Stavanger 2-1 to lift a trophy which still carries as much prestige, if not more, than the league title in Norway.

After leaving Odd Grenland in 2004, he had a brief spell with Viking before joining Stromsgodset as a player in 2006. He became an assistant coach at the same time and on retiring as a player in 2008,
he was appointed manager of the club.

His first two seasons in the job were a battle for survival. In the 2009 campaign, he pledged to strip off on the pitch if Stromsgodset managed to avoid relegation, claiming it would be a huge achievement given the limited resources at his disposal. When they duly stayed up on the last day of the season, Deila was as good as his word and the photographs of him down to his underpants and socks were splashed across the Norwegian media.

If that was an unusual way to raise his profile, it is results on the pitch which have enhanced Deila’s reputation ever since. As his work started to bear fruit, Stromsgodset won the Norwegian Cup in 2010 and made steady improvement in the league.

After finishing runners-up in 2012 to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Molde side, Deila’s team were crowned champions last year. It was only the second title
success in Stromsgodset’s
107-year existence and the first since 1970.

The club were aware that Deila was beginning to attract attention outwith Norway and handed him a new contract, which runs until 2016, in order to head off interest from
Swedish champions Malmo who unsuccessfully attempted to poach him in January this year.

Stromsgodset are currently second in the table as they
defend their domestic title, five points behind Molde after 11 games of the Norwegian campaign which runs from March to October.

Their success under Deila has been built on a remarkable home record which has seen them go 44 league games
unbeaten at their Marienlyst Stadium since June 2011. They are just one short of the all-time Norwegian record set by
Rosenborg.

There is no doubt Deila will be making a huge step up if he lands the Celtic job. Stromsgodset play to average home crowds of around 6,000 and operate in a generally low-key media environment. The contrast at Celtic Park could hardly be sharper.

Deila also has limited experience of European football. He took Stromsgodset into the
Europa League twice – losing 4-1 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid in the third qualifying round in 2011 and then 5-2 on aggregate to Czech side Jablonec at the same stage two years later.

With Champions League group stage participation now the benchmark for success as a Celtic manager, Deila will be under pressure to hit the ground running in the qualifiers next month where Stromsgodset are, coincidentally, among the
potential opponents for the Scottish champions.

If he can ensure Celtic enjoy a third consecutive season among Europe’s elite clubs, then no-one will be asking “Ronny Who?”
for long.

  16. This time last week I was congratulating our car driver for getting us to Murrayfield an hour eariler than the bus had the week before. It was the only pleasant part of the evening.

Since then things have gone downhill slowly, even the reprieve on Thursday led to moral questioning in my mind. Then all the battles on here had me confused and confounded.

This evening I heard Ronnie say that he has looked at 500 players (did I get that correct) and noted that he had clear views about those who have come in on loan because he has seen them play. So good enough for me. Go to it and build your own team and restore our pride in our beloved Celtic.

if its a tough European tie, and i was asked if i wanted a guy who was as fit as a fiddle or a guy who who had the talent of Lubo or Naka, I would take the Lubo option. Fast runners and big tough guys are ten a penny in the game. Skilled players are the key. For me anyway.

The only guy who apparently wasnt fit enough was Tony Watt and i understood that NL loaned him out for that very reason.

Just as the Legia issue is not a Celtic issue, I’m afraid the status of sevco is not an issue Sky can influence ….they simply report on the games………it’s the SPFA / BDO who need to apply the accurate status of zombies 2 (in waiting)

  22. For what it’s worth…

I don’t believe for a second that Legia tried to pull a fast one as some are suggesting. They were up 4-1 from the first leg. Why would they risk it on a guy they clearly didn’t intend to play from the start anyway? Now, I have no problem with Celtic saying they’ll leave it to UEFA to decide the outcome. We have no reason to get involved at this stage. However, if, in theory, UEFA were to come out and say we could play again at Parkead, I would have no problem with that either. In my opinion it would be a breath of fresh air with regard to fairness, in a sport where it’s rarely shown. If UEFA say no, then we have nothing to feel guilty about. The main thing to come out of this, for me, is that UEFA’s system for managing player registration is way out of date. As some have mentioned previously on here, there’s no reason why these things should not be done electronically in this day and age. You can have your whole life managed online today if you choose to. My question for UEFA regarding this type of issue & everything else is:

  28. Dare I defend Peter L , in the transfer market?

I am pretty certain that the most Ronny D has historically spent in the transfer market would be €300 k tops.

He is clearly a student of the game, and I suspect that before he forks out €1m+ he will want to be fairly sure of what he is getting. The reality is that being brought into the position of manager relatively late on, he hasn’t had time to see targets in the flesh, and, as a consequence he will edge towards loans or guys he knows.

In the circumstances, I would prefer this approach to the Barnes / Mowbray strategy.
