Legia less appealing, Man City under-grad

1542

Surprised we got two in yesterday, as Manchester City under-grad, Jason Denayer, signed for a year-long loan last night.  The 19-year-old has yet to play first team football so is likely to be considered as backup at Celtic, though reports are promising.

Not surprised that Legia Warsaw have lodged an appeal to Uefa to be re-instated into the Champions League, they have to try everything possible.  It has not been confirmed what ground Legia have appealed on, however, at the weekend, Polish FA chief exec, Zbigniew Boniek, suggested an appeal would be made on two grounds:

That only one member of the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body was at the hearing to made the decision, and

That Legia were not given the chance to make a submission to the Body.

There are 10 members of the Disciplinary Body and rules state that decisions require the attendance of at least three, unless the case is “urgent”, when a decision can be taken by one member.  To defend their process, Uefa need to insist that the circumstances were urgent, probably citing the Champions League play-off draw, which was due to take place two hours later.

While the Disciplinary Body allow submissions to be made prior to a hearing, Article 34 authorises the Body to undertake a hearing without submissions and “in the absence of one or all of the parties”.

In the unlikely event Legia won an appeal on procedural grounds, a subsequent hearing, perhaps with more Disciplinary Body members in attendance, would take place, and would inevitably reach the same conclusion.

Article 21, paragraph 2, of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations state, “A match is declared forfeit if a player who has been suspended following a disciplinary decision participates in the match.”  There is no ambiguity or lateral for the Disciplinary Body to exercise a different reprimand.

Legia’s appeals can carry on all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but Celtic will not be involved in any future issues.  NK Maribor represent a vastly, vastly, greater risk to their Champions League aspirations.

Really hope he can finally shake off his injury woes , I think he is a terrific player with the added bonus of an eye for goal.

  3. On the “was just being on the bench thing not bad enough” thnig

I’m harping back to my Championship manager days here, but I suppose it depends on if the whole theres the Competition Squad – usually 23-25 players i think – and then theres the match day squad – 16-18 players depending on competition I think

The way I’ve been reading it is that they didnt include him in the competition squad for the previous st pats round (which too me was daft because I’m sure the squads can change every round or 2 at that stage) thereby another player was able to be included in the competition squad and was available for the match squad. i imagine this rule was designed more for the group stages whereby the full 25 man competition squad is handy – Championship manager would have just had a card against his name if greyed him out.

By not including him in the competition squad for that round his suspension didnt count – same as for bowyer moving from leeds to newcastle). I dont know if theres a punishment for having him officially on the bench – I imagine it would be the same as playing because he shouldnt have been on the match day squad – though it may have never occured to uefa as why waste a place on the bench if he cant play…. as seems daft to me

I have a question If Legia Warsaw had not played there banned player but had left him on the bench.Would they not still have been in trouble as he should not have been anywhere near the team ? H.H.

What a great question and why has this not been mentioned before?

    ====================

Not based on reading the rules of the competition but just my own option, yes they would still be in trouble.

My reasoning is that if their centre back was injured in the first minute then he – the suspended player – was available to come on at that time. Thus a theoretical advantage, especially if one of there defenders had an injury going in to the game.

The biggest problem with the internet is the capacity for half assed comment and opinion, dressed up as fact, to be diffused around the planet.

This in turn fuels the kind of reactionary fervour in some human beings that led, in the past, to minor infractions such as burning innocent woman at the stake for being witches.

Can we get a grip here?

I don’t really mind negativity – it’s negativity based on conspiracy theories, calling people huns or morons or lackies etc, demanding that other people answer your questions, or prove their opinions, or contending that your opinion is absolutely clearly unarguably black and white correct – that p’s me off.

Folks as you may remember , we set out an ambition/hope to try to minimise the amount we imposed on the fans while maximising the return . For that reason , we try to only reach out with the begging bowl a couple of times a year – well next Sunday is one of those times .

For the 2nd year in a row , we’ve obtained the collecting licence for the environs around Celtic Park for the flag raising day . As a result , we need to ask for help for volunteers to help with the collection on Saturday 16/8.

Because of the early kick-off, we need to ask for volunteers/helpers from 10:00 am .. If you can help ,either with the collection or with the counting afterwards [after the game obv ], please drop a line to bucketcollection@thekanofoundation.com including your name , address , dob and whether you can do before the game or help with the count afterwards.

As an added incentive , you’ll get a kano t-shirt and free entry into the Kano Karaoke we are holding in Arena from 7pm after the game.

Anyone else is welcome to attend (5gbp entry fee).

For anyone attending the game , please bring along your loose change – we averaged 10p per fan last year – a repeat of that would be great .

Re JFH question re: Legia player

It HAS been discussed on here

To serve the suspension, he was required to be registered in their 25-man squad in their 2 games v St Pats and the 1st leg v Celtic.

LW failed to register him and left him out the 25-man squad thinking that this was sufficient to meet the T/Cs of suspension which clearly it wasn’t.

LW should have registered him and for the games in question worked off a 24-man squad.

LW therefore had a suspended player on the bench at Murrayfield. IMO he was no more eligible to sit on the bench as he was to play. He should have been registered then left sitting in the stand.

BTW tom McLaughlin hit nail on head earlier. Judging by Z Boniek’s reported comments, LW have had their collars felt.

In respect of their appeal, LW should be flung out of the EL for bringing UEFA and Celtic into disrepute.

The precedent for increasing their punishment is Rapid Vienna who, when being given their replay, had an initial fine increased by UEFA .
