Legia looming

847

Celtic have played four games against Polish opposition, losing to Legia Warsaw and Wisla Crakow in 2006 friendlies, drawing thanks to a very late Kenny Dalglish goal against Wislaw, before losing the return game. We’re going to need to break new ground if we’re to reach the Champions League play-off round.

As I predicted, you can ignore the 1-1 draw with St Pat’s last week, Legia are a far better team than that result suggested and it now looks like they have thrown off their summer slumber.

Time to hit form, Celtic.

  1. Por Cierto,

Thanks for your reply, although it will be no surprise I totally disagree with what you perceive I think.

I do not want to play against any team with the term Rangers in its name. Do you.?

What I want is to leave Scottish football and leave ” Rangers” behind. We do not need them or their hatred.

New team, old team, whatever I do not want to play them again. Full Stop.

This is what I wish for and hopefully it is a feasible option.

    What do you want. ?

G67- same as this time last season, needing a striker and a creative midfielder.HH

We have 6 strikers so unless 2 or 3 are leaving I can’t see us signing one.

The manager wants width and pace so I would expect a winger to be our first signing. If Forrest could stay fit for more than 5 minutes he’d be straight into the team. If you have 2 fast wingers bombing forward then you need a poacher in the middle. None of our strikers are poachers, they all prefer to drift in from wide or drop deep.

I would still like to see us signing Armstrong of DU to give us more attacking options from midfield.

    Hamiltontim,

You are right that Barrowfield is behind the Celtic End but where the Velodrome is now was also Barrowfield back in the day. My granny was born there. It stretched along that side of London Road to where the Celtic Social Club is. Then, it became Dalbeth. The other side is still, I think, Newbank and Lilybank.

    ———

Apologies, I posted and then had weans to entertain in the pool :-)

I think you’re wrong on this one mate. I don’t ever remember Barrowfield stretching to the opposite side of London Rd, in fact I think where the Velodrome is now would still be Parkhead up until the new houses/flats before the Social Club where it would then come under Lillybank.

  8. The No 13 Shorts,

Well, I have only ever heard that side called Barrowfield, certainly not Dalmarnock, which is what I originally claimed. Lilybank, as far as I remember, was on the opposite side of London Road and ran into Newbank. Half my class came from the Glamis Road area.

    CELTIC XI….3

    (Boerrigter 25, Henderson 58, McMullan 82)

    MORTON…0

DERK Boerrigter was on target as a Celtic XI ran out 3-0 winners over Morton in sweltering conditions at Lennoxtown yesterday (Wednesday).

The Dutchman opened the scoring in the 25th minute, cutting inside and seeing his shot slip through the hands of the Morton goalkeeper, who was otherwise impressive.

After the break, Liam Henderson and substitute Paul McMullan sealed a comprehensive victory with well-placed efforts.

There was a mix of youth and experience in the Hoops side as some of those who didn’t start against KR Reykjavik the previous night featured alongside Development Squad personnel.

And coach Stevie Frail told the official Celtic website that the game had proved a valuable exercise for both groups of players.

“The manager wanted to use it for guys to get some game-time, and even some of the lads who were on the bench against Reykjavik played, so the likes of Bitton, Boerrigter, McGeouch and Watt all started,” he said.

“It was a good run-out in blistering conditions, with some of them playing 45 minutes and some 60 minutes. It’s always better having an organised game rather than just a bounce game amongst themselves, so I think they got a lot out of it.

“And it was good for the manager that the game was there and he could use it for that. The younger ones played, but the starting team were the ones who have been involved with the team since pre-season.

“Among the younger ones, Paul McMullan and Calum Waters both came on, while guys like Stuart Findlay, who has been away with the first-team, started. It was still a reasonably young side, although there was a wee bit of experience in terms of those who have been training with the first-team.

“It’s always nice to score goals and there were plenty of chances of created,” he added. “It was really hot and the work-rate was good.

“You had guys like Henderson in the middle of the park, while young Dylan’s energy was terrific, and it was also good that young Darnell Fisher got 45 minutes. So it was excellent from that point of view, and hopefully it was pleasing for the manager to see these guys in this environment and playing at this level.”

Many of the young Celts who saw game-time against the Greenock side have been involved with the top team since pre-season got underway, resulting in a marked rise in standards, according to Frail.

“You can see it from the level they are training at that, they are getting used to it,” he added.

“Playing is excellent but they are training like this every day, and you can see the levels getting higher in everything they are doing from guys like O’Connell, Henderson, Findlay and Waters. It’s great for us that the manager trusts them and is putting them into these sessions.”

CELTIC (4-3-3) Fasan; Trialist, O’Connell (Fraser 62), Findlay, F. Twardzik (Waters 35); McGeouch, Bitton (Irvine 60) Henderson; Atajic (McMullan 60), Watt (Fridjonsson 46), Boerrigter (Fisher 46)

  11. So Celtic are playing the Champions of Poland and already the bottle merchants are in overdrive. It seems if we don’t get to play a minnow from a pish league, we are doomed unless we spend millions. We could spend millions and still lose, so even spending big is a gamble.

I think we are good enough to beat Legia with a bit to spare, but this is football and there are no guarantees. I am looking forward to both games. It will not be easy but so what. Only the fearties want it easy every time.

Lionsroar67 What the Israeli’s are doing is scandalous and a war crime. I am not anti Jewish, I have been to Israel, I have been to Auschwitz and am not ashamed to say I wept for the victims there. Today I weep for the innocent children of Palestine. I am not a Hamas supporter and have no time for Islamic Extremists. The Israelis are also extremists and they are the Islamic Extremists best recruiting tool. This offensive was primarily triggered by the shocking kidnap and murder of 3 Israeli teenagers. The occasional rockets that are largely ineffective was a convenient scapegoat. The Israelis and their eye for an eye Biblical type response (except in their case its is a hundred Palestinian eyes for one Jewish eye) are every bit as extreme and fundamentalist as Hamas. In the meantime Mothers and babies are slaughtered on a daily basis and the world tut tuts and for the most part does nothing.

No doubt Fergus was proud last night, but from what I’ve seen it was an occasion for every Tim to marvel at where we currently are. On Twitter, foreign media repeatedly posted remarks about how amazing the stadium/venue is, while the Celtic Football Club sign seemed to dominate the entire proceedings.

Legia will essentially end Ronny and John’s honeymoon period. It’s now down to the business end of qualifying. I’m sure from what we have seen so far, in the very least there will be no lacking in preparation- over to the players. From what I’ve seen so far, we have no reason not to fancy our chances.

I promised myself no more political remarks on CQN, but I’ll make an exception in this case. As to the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gothe presiding over proceedings last night, in a plush seat in our stadium: Dinnae let the door hit your bum on way oot! And no weak arguments about the two churches cozying up. It’s nothing to do with religion. And that’s a wee dose of Ayrshire unforgiveness.

  22. Anybody else having a problem buying a Legia ticket for the 6th online? Website says available for STHs from today

Murrayfield seems to be mostly ‘sold out’ and only lower east offered. Thought STHs would have the option to buy a ticket similar to Tuesday night.

Phoned Ticketmaster for first time – nightmare !! Told me to phone back next week when the seats became available! Didn’t get the concept of Season Ticket holders getting the option to buy now. waste of 15 minutes !

By the way, Zbyszek reckons 60:40 Celtic, 3/2 on. I think that’s closer to the reality than the 5/2 on quoted.
