Legia looming

847

Celtic have played four games against Polish opposition, losing to Legia Warsaw and Wisla Crakow in 2006 friendlies, drawing thanks to a very late Kenny Dalglish goal against Wislaw, before losing the return game. We’re going to need to break new ground if we’re to reach the Champions League play-off round.

As I predicted, you can ignore the 1-1 draw with St Pat’s last week, Legia are a far better team than that result suggested and it now looks like they have thrown off their summer slumber.

Time to hit form, Celtic.

Entirely different from its current efforts!

As I said,I am loathe to comment on the subject because of its complexity. And I have no wish to take sides on it either. But a policy designed to reduce Gaza to rubble is doomed to failure in the long-term.

A conquering force must always allow its new ‘subjects’ to save some self-respect,and to work with them to a mutually beneficial peace. Instead,Israel is on a continual war-footing.

Those who came up with the bright idea of launching unguided missiles indiscriminately into Israeli territory must also shoulder their share of the blame. And hiding them behind a human shield is a disgraceful tactic.

But the Israeli Armed Forces have the capability to target their attacks better than they have been doing, and certainly better than their latest effort.

    • At least 15 people were killed and many wounded when Israeli tank shells reportedly struck a compound housing a UN shelter hosting hundreds of displaced Gazans in Beit Hanoun in the north. It was the fourth time a UN facility had been hit in the fighting.

  3. Thoughts about Champions League qualification

    • Assuming we get past Legia Warsaw and into the Play Off round for CL group stage we will not know if we have qualified until the 2nd leg match, either 26/27 August – just 4/5 days before the (2 month) transfer window shuts. How will that affect the way we do our transfer business? Not ideal is it – all a bit ‘last minute’?

    • Assuming we qualify for the group stages, we will be Pot 4 team according to our coefficient and likely (according to the excellent Bert Kassies site) be ranked 30th out of the 32 teams to qualify. Accordingly can’t expect too many favours in the draw. Even the Europa League after Xmas might be a tough ask.

    • Inequality of the coefficient system (country element is total points divided by number of clubs) hampers Celtic due to the poor display of other Scottish clubs and forces us to start our season mid July. Also explains why Hull City with no European pedigree are ranked higher than Sampdoria, Auxerre, Feyenoord and Monaco because they are an EPL team.

I’m really looking forward to it and as I’ve relocated to 106 at Parkhead I’m hopeful of a great view as an added bonus.

It’s a genuine shame though that obviously the experience was ruined or sullied for you, your dad and others because of travel problems.

  8. Paul,

Belated congratulations on 10 sparkling years. You know how much I value your extraordinary contribution to the gaiety of our lives.

I’m cautiously encouraged by Ronny’s comments after recent games. I have high hopes for our new manager.

However, it was the comments of KR’s manager which troubled me. He pointed out what my friend and I noticed at Murrayfield; a better team would have scored 2 or 3 against our back four. I trust Ronny and John are on the case.

I know it’s probably not a popular view on this site and you are right, it is a massivley complicated situation, but I’m not sure what Isreal can do. Air strikes, ground invasion, targeted assasinations, blockade. None of that would be deemed to be proportionate and would be condemmed by Isreal’s critics.

You do aknowledge that Hamas have a share in the responsibility and I have to wonder what Hamas hope to acheive in continuing to send rockets on a daily basis.

Can’t see us signing anyone except Craig Gordon this transfer window. CL qualification or not. RD has said his aim is to develop our youth prospects and I fully support him in that endeavour. The squad we have at present is good enough to qualify for the group stages.

Lying here in the evening sunshine with the only noise that of a few bees buzzing i can quietly contemplate the latest israeli/ palestinian conflict. I can see both sides rights and wrongs and can ,if i wanted to, make a case for both.

However if I was in gaza with shells raining down on me or in tel aviv with rockets being fired at my home I may not be so measured in my conclusion.

So I will leave it to others to judge and just pray for a ceasefire.

More concerning for me than those coming in are those possibly on their way out.

The EPL starts on 16 August.

Three teams have so far been linked to our players-WBA,Sunderland,Southampton.

They each play three games before the window closes, and of the nine fixtures-though one involves two of those teams-points are a strong possibility in seven of them.

As such I would expect those teams to move in quite soon. Which could well cause problems for any final qualifier.

  16. skyisalandfill @ 19.02

A blockade? You really must be joking. The blockade is already in place and has been ever since the Israeli’s pulled out of Gaza.

The massacre of the Palestinians has nothing to do with defence. The Israeli’s are the aggressors, the occupiers of Palestinian land who deny the Palestinians in Gaza even the slightest possibility of economic advancement.

The Palestinians have no army, navy or air force, have no air defence system. The Israeli’s control their coast, that’s how they murdered those kids playing on the beach.

The Palestinians in their desperation throw stones, the Israeli’s massacre them with the most modern high-tech weaponry in the world.

  17. Gene’s a Bhoy’s Name

So it’s the same in Tel Aviv as in Gaza? Come on, who believes that crap? First the Israeli’s claim everyone there is living in fear of rockets fired from Gaza, and then when airlines cancel flights to Israel – which is bad for the Israeli economy – they get the yanks to put pressure on US airlines to fly, saying it’s perfectly safe. Which is it?

Now that an Egyptian military dictatorship and consequent US aid is secured again something needs to be done about securing the Israeli American Tax dollars these days. Now let me see…..hmmmm…. What to do? Any ideas? Anyone?

  22. Turkeybhoy,

you regularly post a stout defence of the Israelis,i tend not to get involved since I don’t know too much, but given the sophistication of their weapons systems how do you view the bombing of the UN shelter today

  23. They have defended themselves very capably already. Their air defence system has ensured that, to my knowledge, no more than 1 Israeli citizen was killed by rockets fired from Gaza. Gaza has no such system.

The real question is whether the Palestinians have the right to resist their oppressors.

We don’t need to sell & hopefully we wont. If any of the clubs you mention want our prize assets they are going to have to pay what we want. If they do meet our valuations then we are going to have to accept it as good business for the club and hope that the squad is still good enough to qualify.

  25. I dont think many Rugger games with 67,000 fans have to also deal with rush hour traffic.

During rush hour the pressure points are the Gyle / Hermiston gate and the by-pass right where we all headed.

Maybe a bit of understanding now for the fans who come from outwith Glasgow, the time we have to leave the house to get to Celtic park on Champion league nights.

Sure there were car loads of fans, however there were still loads of single drivers going to the game.

I was 45 minutes from house in Falkirk to Murrayfield Tram station at 7:47. Let the tram take the strain

If fans travel plans are just follow the guy in front, or type in the postcode on the sat nav then no wonder all the same routes were busy.

  26. skyislandfill

“So what do you see as proportionate?”

A proportionate Palestinian response would be to repay the Israeli’s in kind, but of course they are unable to do so.
