So many good things to like about the way we attack and put our opponents under pressure. It’s good to watch, but we do need to improve our conversion rate. Unfortunately, we are such a soft touch at the back. Yeah, I know, it’s not new. Not had a coherent defensive system/strategy since Martin O’Neill’s tenure. Obviously not Ange’s priority. But we ship too many goals, too easily. Potential to be humiliated (again) against good (more so against very good) European sides. I read recently elsewhere in the Celtic blogosphere: “Who is our defensive coach? Do we have a defensive coach? Do we have a defensive system? Do we have a defensive structure?” All understandable questions. Do we just have to live with this naivety and enjoy the goals when they come, or is there some other way? I love Ange, but have little confidence that he is the man to solve this ingrained problem.

Apologies for the negativity. It’s been a funny day.

Re pre season friendlies, i think we know it’s all about fitness, getting new guys bedded in,but it’s not too much to look for improvement from some players, who have had chances to impress and haven’t, namely McCarthy and Johnston.

  3. Looks as though we remain a fast paced, skillful attacking force. Good news.

We all know our European defensive record is very poor.

    Are there signs of improvement?

In CL, Israelis draw 1-1 with Greeks, Kiev tied 0-0 with Fenerbahce after 80 minutes, Ferencvaros leading Slovan Bratislava 1-0, and Maribor tied with Moldovans 0-0.

It’s not knew we were a ‘soft touch at the back’ when we got beaten by Dynamo Kiev in the European Cup in 1968?

Fast forward to any of a gazillion European games since to find a defensively superior Celtic.

When AP’s name emerged from the debris left over from the Eddie Howe mistake, we learned that he played a modern game like Ronny Deila, Brendan Rodgers and virtually every other team in Europe, barring a few others.

The system Celtic play is mirrored across Europe and is down to personnel suitability and selection, good player, good defence. In fairness CQN has its share of Bloggers that don’t know what the formation is, just that its s8yte when we get beaten or sometimes even draw. I agree the conversion rate should be better and 4-0 at half time, is always better than 2-0.

  7. We had, and always will have our defensive problems against better European teams. However, once we had the defence sorted we won three out of four in the EL and were a Borucs hair away from getting a result in Germany against a CL Bundesliga team

We’ll do the same this season, get out scored, but we’ll go down with our boots on, which is more than can be said of most of our European adventures recently.

We’ve forgotten how good our defensive record was domestically. Even after the start that left us 6th at the end of September, last season’s defensive record was only bettered by Celtic teams times in the SPL since 2000/2001. In only one year when MON was in charge did we concede fewer than 22 goals. We conceded 25, 29 and 36 goals in three of the seasons.

The Huns scored 5 times against us in 5 games and half an hour, 4 times in normal time, less than a goal a game.

We were exceptional defensively, despite having second stringers like Montgomery, Welsh and Scales making a lot of appearances

We’ll be fine once the real stuff gets going

    My thoughts on Mike’s J

He has lots of skill but lacks game awareness.

I thought that it was possibly down to poor

I blamed it in part on poor coaching or a lack of coaching from previous regimes.

However he has had a year of coaching under Ange with no signs of improvement. so I have now formed the opinion that he is not responding to Angecin the same way as others. However his injuries may be a factor also.

  10. Feel we haven’t spoken enough about the magnificent Reo, his teeth whitening gumshield and that goal…

Can’t see Mikey being with us at the end of August sadly, can’t see why Welsh would stay as 4th place and can’t see anything in McCarthy. Those have been ongoing questions and not based on tonight…

I’d sell Turnbull if there was interest and invest it in wee Edouard….

  11. We’re not going back. We might tweak things a bit away from home in Europe but expect more of the same, only, hopefully, better than last year.

Our last two Champions League campaigns were miserable. We need a different approach this time and we have the coach to do it

  12. MJ is not professional enough – his body language is not positive, his selfishness when composure and pass is better option, his lack of fight.

Rangers got rid of Barker for the same, they will likely ship out Sakala for the same – why have we stuck with MJ for so long? injuries and/or training ground performance giving him benefit of the doubt?

Aint got it, Aint showing it, Aint Celtic future!

McCarthy , MJ can be improved upon

I couldn`t agree more…..and have made roughly the same type of comment many times.

Lots of good points made. Thanks guys. Yeah, Ange plays a contemporary system involving keeper-sweeper and two centre backs on either side of the pitch, with full backs attacking further forward. It leaves acres of space to be exploited in the middle of our defensive area by nippy, skilful forwards. One mistake is probably fatal. To achieve zero mistakes we would require players of a quality we will never be able to afford. I think it’s a bit of a delusion. And when we see those centre backs passing laterally to each other across that big empty space…….well…And that’s not how Sevco or top EPL teams play. I’ve just read Stebhoy’s post. He’s right. Gerrard created a defensive system, a visible pattern, which is fluid but dynamic. It doesn’t leave players isolated. He also was aware of the importance of physicality, to which we are just waking up. Gio has adopted the same system – clearly effective in Europe – and, to me, stands in stark contrast to what we aspire to achieve. Having said all of that, I ‘d accept 3:2 or 4:3 any game. But……

. Unfortunately, we are such a soft touch at the back……I read recently elsewhere in the Celtic blogosphere: “Who is our defensive coach? Do we have a defensive coach? Do we have a defensive system? Do we have a defensive structure?” All understandable questions. ”

Not that understandable to me……unless, of course, you are only going to use the games that back up those claims. Our `soft touch` defence conceded FAR fewer goals than any other team in the SPFL premier Division.

IF we only talk of Europe, our defensive recorded was very poor; if we only talk of Scotland, it was very good.

  16. SUPERANNUATED FENIAN on 20TH JULY 2022 9:07 PM

They’re a good cup team, but are heavily reliant on the atmosphere at ibrox. They got fewer points than us from an easier group.

They also blew it in the champions league qualifiers

Their defensive style in Europe might work, but it doesn’t translate into a good defensive record in Scotland.

  18. Superannuated Fenian on

Maybe that reflects differences in the quality of the goal threat posed by SPFL teams and fair-to-middling European sides?

  19. I was googling for the number of subs allowed for the season ahead. No clear answer found – anyone know if it us remaining at 5 for Scottish competitions?

  20. “The point of the exercise is not to win games of football. the point is to improve.”

    Ange after this evening`s game.

  21. If that was the case then surely as they concede fewer against teams with more of a goal scoring threat they’d concede fewer with teams with less of one?

The Huns’ style is better suited to knockout football. They won 1 game away from home last season in Europe, including qualifiers against Malmo and Alashkert. They don’t get generally get results away from home.

Their back 5 unit has been together for 4 years, they’ve played the same system for all that time. In their first season a first choice back 5 of Macgregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Katic and Barisic finished third behind Rapid Vienna in their EL group

We’re coming into our second season, we’ve improved our squad so we’ll not see any more of Montgomery or Scales who made 6 appearances last season or Biton who made 6 apperances in defensive positions.

We’ll be better, I don’t think they will be

  22. The first goal we gave away this evening was something we didn’t see last season – ccv getting out manoeuvred and turned. Perhaps the heavy training schedule so far is the cause. But the basic of ‘don’t let it bounce’ was the answer initially. The defence wasn’t set because the ball forward was rushed. Normally one CB would attack the ball, one would cover behind or be ready to do so. Very fixable stuff.

The second goal was a good finish from a generally low percentage chance. Again, maybe turnbull could have got closer, made it harder to get a shot away.

But apart from that and even when we lost control of the game for a while and changed the defence in the second half did we concede many chances? I don’t recall us doing so.

    We will be fine.

  23. Superannuated Fenian on

Hi, HOT SMOKED. Let’s be brutally honest. Our club should be winning the SPL title every year. Not to do so should be seen as a failure. We have only one credible opponent, and, nowadays, they should always be playing catch-up. Our league has no strength in depth. We need to measure our quality against European sides, not SPFL sides. Agus faigimid suid mara ta se…..

  24. I think, depending on the groups, we’ll concede more goals but win more points in the CL than them

I’d like to think that’s how we should approach it as well

  25. SUPERANNUATED FENIAN on 20TH JULY 2022 9:47 PM

Even when they spend roughly similar amounts to us on wages and transfer fees over a few years?

  28. Whether we should be winning it every year or not, with dodgy refs etc it is never a foregone conclusion.

Last year was a real tough one to win and I don’t see this year being any different,

Yes of course we should be doing a lot better in Europe and while it’s brilliant in one sense going straight into Group Stages we are in at the deep end straight away so I’m not too optimistic that we will improve our record to any great extent this year.

Maybe I’m in a minority but if I had a choice of Celtic Parking the Bus & losing by less goals or bringing our own game and taking the game to the big guns even though it runs the risk of a bit of a tanking, I’d rather see Celtic having a go.

I’m not talking about a total kamikaze approach but definitely play our own game & let them worry about us.
