Lennon and Solbakken rematch

130

Celtic had the chances to put tonight’s tie to bed in the first half in Copenhagen, but profligacy in front of goal and a subsequent revival by the home team mean we have to win the game and earn the right to be in tomorrow’s last-16 draw.

The absence of suspended Ryan Christie and injured Olivier Ntcham leaves Neil Lennon with fewer options than normal.  Tom Rogic is a straight replacement for the No. 10 role, but Tom has seen little football in recent months, it will be asking a lot of him to play an entire 90 minutes.  The same is true of Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Ahead of the first leg Copenhagen manager Stale Solbakken told reporters he expected Celtic to play three at the back.  He read Neil Lennon’s plans wrong, which probably gave Celtic the early advantage.  Solbakken compensated at halftime.  These are two experienced European managers, how they match up and then how they change their formations during the game, will go a long way to determining the outcome.

I was happy enough to see Newco progress last night.  We go to Ibrox three days after the first leg of the next round of the Europa League, better to go when both teams have had a strenuous midweek game than have the home side rest up.  There is still work to be done on several fronts.

Difficult tie tonight, reminiscent of the Cluj return in the summer.

It’ll need performances from the entire team.

  3. Siempre Celtic (formerly Traditionalist88) on

Maybe overly optimistic, especially with Christie out, but we have many options and in form attacking threats.

  4. In theory Celtic should win this easily.

But last night’s result suggests that the theory might be unreliable.

Let time take it’s course.a little patience ‘re Patryk me thinks.

To be fair I am a wee bit suprised at taking the Meejah world’s point of view,ie 90 minute cynic said this, the ,athletics Celtic writer said that.sun says, rekkkord states etc etc.its definitely info age!!,what gets me is we are watching our club week in and out for years,do we not trust and have confidence to trust our own eye? What we see etc.its one of the joys of cqn the dissecting of a game post match, real fans explaining their point,(yirsel including u) of much more value and valid than someone of paid opinion who happens to be good at English/reporting

    Trust our own view,

    ____

To clarify, the 90 minute Cynic is a Celtic fan podcast. They interviewed Ryan Hubbard an Englishman that covers Polish football and has recently wrote a book about it.

Kieran Devlin writes for The Athletic and is a lifelong Celtic fan. Generally covers it from a Celtic point of view.

Comparisons with the Daily Record and The Sun are not valid

What is true is that we have seen very little from Klimala and we have seen he’s dropped behind Bayo in the pecking order. Does that mean Neil Lennon believes in Bayo? Well his choice to play Lewis Morgan up front instead of Bayo would suggest not.

  6. Copenhagen hold at present European record for not conceding more than 1 goal in 28 consecutive games

    I would settle for 0-0 or 1-0

  7. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

I don’t think Copenhagen have conceded more than 2 goals in Europe in a long time. The imperative is to keep a clean sheet tonight as if they score I would wager on the tie heading to extra time.

I think Bayo was injured during the period that LM was playing upfront. He certainly wasn’t on bench for either Rennes or Sevco game.

  8. With Christie and Ntcham out,I can see Dembele making the bench, there won’t be a lot of creative players on it,if required.

The big concern is if an offer lands on the table for Eddy in the summer that we can’t say no to and/or the player wants to go.

Gut instinct + evidence to date suggests that Bayo and Klimala will not be either good enough or ready to carry the burden of striking responsibility next season.

Lets hope it doesnt come to it for a long time but we may need to have a couple of striker targets who are ready to go in the first team to support Leigh.

Make or break few months for Bayo, Klimala may get a bit longer if his attitude is good and shows he has thw quality in training and reserve fixtures.

  11. Copenhagen are physical tall and organised, they dont concede many goals, their keeper had an incredible game in their home match,we could have bagged 4 away goals but for him, he is as important to them as FF to us, a quick start and take a few of the created chances will hopefully quell their enthusiasm.

Is that a thing…no more than one goal…

Anyway, not sure how far back that goes, a few years I’d suggest?

They’ve conceded 24 goals in 22 games domestically in Denmark this season which is probably a better barometer. Not very impressive defensive stats. By comparison, Midtjylland, top of Danish league, have conceded 13.

We spend the money on a replacement. We pair him up with the Griff. We have alternatives biting at their heels, we have money to spend on the problem and we have precedent that we have been able to keep the show on the road when key players leave.

Absolutely – just that when Dembele left Eddy was able to step up and take on more responsibility.

We probably won’t have that when Eddy goes so will be more pressure to get into the market quickly and get it right.

Absolutely. Posted last week that amidst all the shouts for Bayo, Kilmala, Soro, Shved etc to get game time the young bhoy Karamoko may well be top of the queue. Lenny was at the match the other day and will have been impressed.

    HH

  16. From last thread, January buys have a much better chance of getting game time at Sevco as their form is patchy, Since the Winter Break he have a 100% win domestic record so Lenny cant just drop players who are doing the Business week in week out to accommodate Soro or Polish Paddy. Also we are in a battle on all fronts and to quote Lenny himself every point is a prisoner.

In a way we are victims of our own success.

The Hun win last night has upped the ante a bit for tonight, there are shades of Cluj haunting me just now.

Odsonne today is a far better player than he was when Moussa left. Posters on here were in panic mode after Dembele left. We’ll be alright if the scouts get it right. I haven’t given up on Bayo and Polish Paddy. They may still make a big impact on the team during their stay with us.

The more distraction for a knackered hun squad, the better IMHO.

  20. I’m not usually cautious, but I would start 4-5-1 tonight, we were outnumbered in MF second half last week, get possession and play ourselves in to the game.Remember Cluj,a good 1-1 away result and….

Disagree fella. Celtic are favourites for the tie, at home in front of the proverbial 12th man. I want us on the front foot and going for their pretty static defence. I’d play the 2 up front, stick 5 across the midfield and have 3 at the back. Blow them away.

We don’t really do cautious, not at home.

    ====

    Well done.

The point being that if it goes back a few years, which it does, personnel can have changed greatly. Also, you have posted a very selective list. Lets look at a few others included in that great run:

    Quarabag

    The New Saints

    Vardar

    Riga

    Lugano

    Malmo

So factoring in that the makeup of their defence may have altered in part or even in full and the fact they have a poor defensive record for a team going for a title in Denmark, I’d say its nothing to be overtly concerned about.

Pumped by Midtjylland 4-1 in November too, 2-1 by Hobro(?) and 3-1 by Brondby.

A bit of luck last week and better decision making from the usually reliable Callum McGregor and we’d have score 3 or 4.

Thats why I gave you stats across the season first, a more reliable barometer.

    Copenhagen – 24 conceded in 22 games.

    Mityjjlland – 13 conceded in 22 games.

    Celtic – 17 conceded in 28 games.

They may be big and powerful looking so goals from corners may not be an option but hey we had years of not scoring much from corners and won a treble treble :)
