Lennon and Solbakken rematch

130

Celtic had the chances to put tonight’s tie to bed in the first half in Copenhagen, but profligacy in front of goal and a subsequent revival by the home team mean we have to win the game and earn the right to be in tomorrow’s last-16 draw.

The absence of suspended Ryan Christie and injured Olivier Ntcham leaves Neil Lennon with fewer options than normal.  Tom Rogic is a straight replacement for the No. 10 role, but Tom has seen little football in recent months, it will be asking a lot of him to play an entire 90 minutes.  The same is true of Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Ahead of the first leg Copenhagen manager Stale Solbakken told reporters he expected Celtic to play three at the back.  He read Neil Lennon’s plans wrong, which probably gave Celtic the early advantage.  Solbakken compensated at halftime.  These are two experienced European managers, how they match up and then how they change their formations during the game, will go a long way to determining the outcome.

I was happy enough to see Newco progress last night.  We go to Ibrox three days after the first leg of the next round of the Europa League, better to go when both teams have had a strenuous midweek game than have the home side rest up.  There is still work to be done on several fronts.

  2. Siempre………… We must try and hold Eddy and Ntcham at the club for another season if we have Champions League ambitions but I have this feeling both are playing for their ticket and a move to a bigger club in the summer. If so, for nothing less than 40mil for Eddy and at least 15-20 for Ntcham. Man Utd.payed 55mil for a player from Sporting Lisbon in Jan .that is the market for big wealthy clubs with massive TV revenue.

Regarding the big game to-night, Celtic Park is not an easy venue for any club to get a result, it inspires some players and gives some the jitters. Are Copenhagen as good as Cluj? probably not quite but better than SPFL opposition. Celtic will have to be on their game to-night having seen what the Danes are capable of in the second half last week. We are without a couple of our good players so I expect a tight game maybe 1-0 or 2-1 to the Hoops.

Any victory tonight will do me.

Can I qualify that. For Celtic hopefully…

  4. TWO points on my mind right now

Of course I would take 0-0 right now. However the last 10 mins would be really hard to watch from behind the sofa.

If I was in charge of Man Utd and I had a straight choice of 50 million for Dembele or 50 million for Eduard?

    I would take French Eddy.

I genuinely think Eduard is the better all round player.

That is the thinking Celtic’s money men need to have.

  5. Take care all bhoys and ghirls coming from and returning to snow and icy areas. Enjoy game, but go safely.

  6. The team thats doing the rounds allows us to switch from 3 at the back to 4 with ease. I like it.

  7. How much excitement can one old man take – packing for holidays (should be on road to airport in 14 hours) and a Celtic European 2nd Leg home tie to attend with kick off in just 3 hours. Could really do without extra time and penalties this evening!

Don’t want us to go all kamikaze tonight but I don’t want to show them too much respect either.

We’ve beaten better than Copenhagen in Europe this season.

Have they, during the same period, beaten better than Celtic?

Martin Henry, the Chair of the Independent Review of Sexual Abuse in Scottish Football, issues the following personal statement in response to reports this morning.

“Firstly, I am hugely disappointed that, following an interview with Channel 4 updating on the significant work undertaken by the Review team, I am compelled to clarify any uncertainty that has arisen from reports this morning.

“For the avoidance of doubt, and given the seriousness of the subject matter, neither in the Channel 4 interview nor in the as yet unpublished final report is there any reference to liability on any clubs that have formed part of the review. This is, quite simply, not within the terms of reference the review team have been working to.

“Equally, the final report will make no reference to compensation. On the contrary, in my dealings with the survivors, there is a clear wish for acknowledgement and wider recompense – amends to be made in whatever way deemed appropriate by that survivor – for the harm suffered. This is, of course, entirely a matter for the survivors and again not within the scope of the final report. I have stated consistently that the pursuit of personal justice is not necessarily financial.

“On the specific reference to Celtic FC, one of many clubs referenced in the final report, the Review in actual fact states clearly that the club has gone to great lengths to address any past contacts between the club and Celtic Boys Club – and have done so effectively. This is welcomed by the Review and welcomed within the review.

“The efforts of the Review team are completely focused on protecting young people by learning from the past to make football a safe place for children and young people.”

The Scottish FA also wishes to clarify that Martin was speaking in his independent capacity and that personal views expressed are not in the scope of the Review’s Terms of Reference, nor are they endorsed by the Scottish FA.

  12. Here we are at the end of Febuary and another magical night of European football to look forward to after a long journey that began last July not sure but is this Celtic’s 14h European match -could be more – this season and hopefully more to come. Big match, big crowd under the Paradise lights.

So much for the po faced CQN do gooders mindlessly suggesting that Celtic pay compensation or a de gratia payment .

Which in the minds of the general public would inevitably be perceived as an admission of guilt .

  15. Hankray – actually it’s our 16th – 4 qualifying rounds (Sarajevo, Nomme Kaluj, Cluj and AIK) then 6 group stage and last week’s away leg.

    Hi mate,

    You miss my point totally,

In short whose view do you take?

Your own – watching Celtic for ‘x’ years OR

A paid opinion that appears online.

I will trust my own judgement, not paid opinion.

As an aside I would categorize them all together as meeja, be it colloquial scum/rekkkord etc or the ones who write in structured English Times, athletic etc.

  21. Tim Horton, early 1967, Celtic v St Mirren at Paradise on a Saturday afternoon, Big Tam Gemmell playing at centre half because Big Billy was injured. Big Tam scores early, direct from a free kick and the fans stand back, awaiting a deluge of goals.

Full time – 1-1!! That was the season that Dundee Utd also beat us home and away by 3-2. Very competitive league.

  22. Jobo, I know you have been to Lanzagrotte before, but if in the Playa Blanca area make an effort to pop in to the Rubicon area. Great wee pub there called the Blue Note (NOT the Blue Nose) – live and gentle jazz every night.

  23. Could be some interesting teams in the draw tomorrow.

Ajax, Arsenal, Benfica, Celtic, Inter Milan, Roma, Man United and Wolves. And others who shall remain nameless. like their fathers before them.

Got to get there first of course. Bit concerned that we do not appear to have strengthened the first team anywhere on the park since the winter break. Wouldn’t be a problem had both Ryan and Oliver were both available, but they are not, and the question is can Calum, Tom and Scott get control of the midfield long enough for us to create and take a couple of chances? The answer of course has to be yes! Celtic by two.

Are we to assume that you do not know the meaning of the phrase ‘de gratia’?

  25. I have some concerns about tonight’s tie.

Lat week’s Europa ties saw 9 home wins, 3 away wins (Inter, Arsenal & Basel) plus 4 draws – all 1:1 like ours. I don’t think Copenhagen are in the same class as Inter, Arsenal & Basel but, on the other hand, there may be a higher percentage of away wins in round 2 when teams know what they need. Already Sevco have won away and Leverkusen are winning at Porto tonight.

For sure, Copenhagen will not be as bad as they were in that first half last week. They will be a week further on in being back from their winter break. Like us, they are a team suited to counter attack.

Our job is not to be as bad as we were in the 2nd half. If we score first, my optimism will rise but right now I think we are only slight favourites. Bookies have us at 4/9 on and that should reassure me, but this is Europe- it could be a Celtic without Scott Brown….so I need that first goal

OK. So you don’t know what de gratia means. Fair enough.

Do I care about Celtic’s reputation? Yes.

The question is how best to protect that reputation.

Deriding those who have expressed concern about the club’s acts of omission and commission over this issue as mindless do gooders might not be the way to go.
