Lennon, Duffy and illusive perspective on last season

208

Last week, Neil Lennon wired into the debate on what went wrong at Celtic last season.  Neil is as much a Celtic man as you or I, so I suspect he’s still as raw as the rest of us on this topic, I’ll therefore cut him some slack.  For me, it is too soon for sound perspective, we need to let it settle for a while before insight kicks in.

To help gain some of this commodity for myself, I switched between the Scotland and Ireland games on Saturday.  Reports of how well Shane Duffy was performing in the English Premier League this season sounded remarkable and I wanted to see with my eyes what my ears did not believe.  All I know for sure on last season is that the Shane Duffy I watched for Ireland is not the same person we had at Celtic.  No DNA test could convince me otherwise.

Ireland’s Duffy did nothing spectacular, but he was where he should be throughout the game, no wandering off, no concentration lapses.  There will be books written on what went wrong last season, I doubt any of them will explain the performance of the player we loaned from Brighton.  That Ireland defender is solid, though, if only we signed him instead.

  1. just checked 2009 it was before FIFA |declared that Norn Irish men could opt for the repiblic.

    International career

Lennon made his international debut for Northern Ireland on 11 June 1994 when he come on as a substitute in a friendly against Mexico in Miami.[13] He had to wait nearly a year for his next cap when he played against Chile in another friendly.[13] Lennon made his first competitive appearance three months later on 3 September 1995 in a European Championship qualifier away against Portugal. After that, Lennon became a fixture in the international side although Northern Ireland were unsuccessful in their attempts to qualify for the finals of major tournaments.

Lennon decided to retire from international football in August 2002 upon receiving a death threat before a Northern Ireland match against Cyprus. The threats came after his alleged claim that he wanted to play for a team representing a United Ireland.[36] The threat was allegedly made by the Loyalist Volunteer Force, although the organisation later denied this.[37][38]

Lennon was capped 40 times by Northern Ireland,[6] scoring two goals. He also captained the team on several occasions.

  2. Lennon played for the north because it put him in the international spot light and he wanted to further his career. So while the RUC were killing nationalists in Lurgan, Neil stood for GSTQ at Windsor. His choice. That’s fair enough.

But please God let’s knock the fenian stuff on the head. Neil Lennon is not and will never be, a fenian.

Don’t be insulted by the attention seeking scum its a trait of the unionist vermin who follow charity worker and unelectable George Galloway.handy little rent boy.

  4. Can someone enlighten me on watching Sportscene Ladies games ,for a club Sevco who are supposed to be skint ,they have what I said many times built a area with a stand for supporters to sit and see there development and Ladies play ,why wasn’t the same scheme implemented at Barrowfield instead of paying money to Airdrie to use there pitch ,ive always said this board that run our club are way behind on other clubs why is that ,but I figured it out the salaries and bonuses payed out to Lawell and co put paid any of these developments over the years, example up at Lennoxtown no full indoor pitch ,

For those wanting their club to be run the very best it can possibly be and it’s decision makers held to account for failing to do same.

Those very same “new breed” and “entitled” fans as NL would say.

  7. If not his life

I wouldn’t fear. Neil’s death threats from loyalists have done nothing for his love of ‘NI’.

Lennon can still be seen on BBC or Sky commenting on his ‘country’ as ‘us’ and ‘we’.

  8. An Tearmann,

Thank you. I won’t get involved in politics but I will respond to what I see as personal slurs by others.

You seem like a gentleman. Like John Glass and Michael Collins – neither of which were “plastic paddies” although born in Scotland. Neither am I a “plastic paddy”, despite having a season ticket for Celtic FC and being born in Scotland

The Paddies you refer to paid NFLs wages.

  12. Neil Lennon has accepted zero responsibility for last season, no matter how much kudos was in the bank,he was in charge of an absolute clusterfk ,hes now saying some or most signings weren’t his,and had no input to Gavin Strachan coming in, what other manager would put up with that? He should have resigned last October/November, Lawwell or Desmond should have done their job.As long as he comes out with shite from last season, and doesn’t name names,he is fair game for me,oh and remember the wee gem he tried after a few more embarrassing defeats….’ there is something behind the scenes i can’t go in to….’ what was that? Another excuse…? His self awareness is nil,he should keep his head down and shut the f up about last season, as every tale he tells, shows up his lack of management. It was everyone else’s fault not mine….aye ok.

Why wouldn’t he? Isn’t it good that the small-minded eejits who see life through the prism of sectarianism haven’t been able to stop him from loving the country he grew up in.
