‘LENNON HAD TO GO,’ INSISTS SUTTON WHO CALLS FOR ‘RESPECT’ FOR LEGEND

CHRIS SUTTON insisted Neil Lennon had lost the trust of the Celtic fans, as CQN reported his outspoken verdict earlier this month.

The former Hoops goal hero insisted his old team-mate had to go following a catastrophic campaign that has seen the nine-in-a-row champions veer inexplicably off the rails.

However, Sutton was also quick to applaud the efforts of a club legend whose last game in charge was the awful 1-0 loss against Ross County in Dingwall on Sunday night.

The parting of the ways came late last night and the club confirmed the manager’s departure on the Stock Exchange this morning.

Sutton tweeted: “Neil Lennon had to go. I know this season has been a disaster but I hope after the anger settles down about this season that people respect that Neil has been a great servant to Celtic both as a player and manager.”

However, the one-time England international will not be surprised by the latest news which leaves assistant boss John Kennedy in charge of the remaining eight league games of the campaign with the side lagging 18 points behind Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox outfit.

Earlier this month, Sutton said: “Fans need to be energised. They are toiling for hope. It’s been decided amongst the fan base that Neil is no longer the man they trust to take the team forward and Celtic need to address this fact.

“Selling season tickets is going to be hard enough in the spring after what has happened this season with not getting into games and watching some atrocious displays on their laptops.
“I’m afraid to say they’ll struggle even more to shift books if Neil is still in charge when they go on sale. That’s the unfortunate truth.”
