LENNY WARNS CLUBS: NO ‘SILLY MONEY’ BIDS

NEIL LENNON has told opposing clubs that Celtic will NOT pay “silly money” for players.

The eight-in-a-row champions picked up a Scottish transfer record fee of £25million from Arsenal for Scotland international left-back Kieran Tierney just before last night’s 5pm signing deadline.

Lennon also confirmed the Hoops had not entertained an enquiry from ex-boss Brendan Rodgers about the availability of Callum McGregor as he attempted to strengthen his Leicester City squad ahead of the new season.

The Parkhead gaffer, preparing his squad for tomorrow’s mid-day showdown with Motherwell at Fir Park, reflected on the cash injection from the London side and told Sky Sports News: “It makes things a little bit easier in terms of maybe pushing the boat out a little bit more.

“But we’re not going to break transfer records and spend silly money.

“We have targets in mind and we are working away on that sooner or later. We are looking at maybe two or three positions to add.

“We also maybe need to move a few players on to get them playing or make room in the squad. Until we do that, we may not look to bring anyone in just yet.”

He added: “We are not interested in selling any of our better players now.

“It’s well documented that there was interest in Callum. It was just an approach, no bid. That’s over now and we will settle him down.

“He is playing as well as he has ever done and, hopefully, he will again have another fantastic season as he has done the last couple.”

Scott Sinclair, who is out of contract at the end of the season, was linked with a move back to England, but the Irishman admitted no no bids were made for the 30-year-old attacker who cost £4.5million when he joined from Aston Villa in August 2016.

The former Chelsea, Swansea City and Manchester City attacker, who netted 61 goals in his first three seasons, was not selected for the squad ahead of the 1-1 draw with Cluj in the first leg of the of the Champions League third round qualifier in Romania on Wednesday.

Lennon added: “There was interest in him, but it never materialised and he’ll be in the squad for tomorrow.”
