Leo lots to do to match Diego

771

Netherlands thumping Spain 5-1 seems like a season ago.  We’ve had 24 different World Cup-match days since then, during which time most of us have watched close to a season’s worth of football.  The dethroning of Spain, in such dramatic fashion, was an early portent of what we were in store for.  Brazil’s humiliation at the hands of Germany provided one of the most memorable football events of our times.

While everyone seems to have nominated the competition as the best ever, the football has been of variable quality.  Lots of strong football countries failed to show, including Spain, Italy and England.  Africa promised early on, then fell.  Russia gave no indication they were on-schedule to give the performance of a lifetime when they host the tournament in four years.

Brazil reached the semi-finals but this will surely be known as one of the worst Brazilian teams ever.  Argentina have reached their first final in 24 years ago, but I can’t figure out how they made it.  Performances against Bosnia, Iran, Nigeria, Switzerland, Belgium and then Netherlands never convinced we were watching eventual winners.  The best they have achieved, so far, is a single goal victory.

Belgium’s golden generation were a mere shadow of their less-fancied Dutch neighbours, who under-promised and over-delivered, again.  Germany are the team who deserve to take the trophy, and although Lionel Messi finds himself in a World Cup Final this evening, on the basis of what we’ve seen over the last four weeks, he’s no Diego Maradona.

Enjoy the final, the real stuff starts in two days.

  3. As for Tuesdays line up….. I’d opt for the following, and shape…. 4-2-3-1

    Foster

    Lustig. Van Dijk, Mulgrew. Izzy

    Biton, Johansen

    Griffiths. Commons. Boeriggter

    Stokes

I’m with those who’d rather see Boeriggter benched, but what the manager realises, is that with Samaras away, Boeriggter is our only natural wide left player. Surely a must fill position in terms of a new signing…

  4. Just on, just woke night shift is no gid.

  7. I haven’t been posting for over a month and it saddens me to read of the grief some posters are suffering. Great respect is due to all those who have posted prayers and good thoughts to those who are in mourning.

As a practising Catholic I sincerely believe in the after life and I hope that the sorrow that people feel is tempered by the fact that they will be reunited in the hereafter.

My condolences and prayers to those who are suffering. The pain of losing a loved one is hard but remember those who live on in our hearts and memories never really die.

  8. Neustadt Braw, my condolences to you and your family also, ah parents, they do a good job and leave us better placed.

  9. I couldn’t disagree more. Messi is head and shoulders above Maradonna, or anyone else for that matter. I am 62 yrs old and must admit to having witnessed the likes of Pele, Puskas, DiStefano, Eusebio, Charlton, Best, Baxter, Johnstone, (Jimmy that is), and many many more, any of whom had the right in their day to be called the best in the world. But I have never seen anyone who can hold a candle to Leo Messi.

Today, Leo has his date with destiny. I firmly believe this is his time, his opportunity and his right.

Impeccable round of golf from Justin

Rose to win the Scottish open.

    Back to the fitba.

Messi has been a team player so far with

only small glimpses of the magic he can provide.

Will the Germans tincker with their team to

keep Messi quiet ? Do they need to ?

    Looking forward to the match.

  13. The misery of watching the Holland v Argentina semi-final is still fresh , where neither team felt confident to do much at all, so hoping that the Germans show the way forward for world football and hand out a good football lesson to Argentina.

Rio’s would have no chance with that garb!

  16. Read today that Cesar Menotti, the former Argentina manager says that Neuer is the best goalkeeper of all time. Also that if you concentrate on being defensive then you must lose in being attacking, and this is what Argentina have done, forcing their midfield to back up their defence and being over dependent on Messi.

BTW West Germany wont their World Cups in 54, 74, and 90. So 2014?

  17. Watching the highlights of last nights game…..David Luiz is just plain mingin.

PSG you deserve all you get ..up yeez.

  18. just read that Justin Rose won. Pity they couldn’t cover it on BBC, mind you they had coverage of the Ladies Golf.

  19. weetim67,

I can give you a couple of years; so, I have seen all those you mention. I think Messi could be classed with them but I don’t think he’s better. My top 3, in no particular order, since it is too difficult, would be Pele, di Stefano and Puskas. Might be because I saw them as an impressionable wee bhoy.

I’m not at TITP. I used to go every year but my mate who lived across the road from it inconsiderately moved to The Borders. Also the year Oasis played changed the ‘atmosphere’ of TITP. Add on to that the cost, and it’s no longer something I can do. It’s great weather for it. Those there are going to have a great time.

I should say it’s not my cause as such (Not wanting to steal any credit) but one I support. We are all one or two steps away from being homeless. HH
