Less is more for central defenders

Gustaf Lagerbielke left an unhappy 2-year stay at Celtic behind him yesterday with a permanent move to Braga, who last season finished fourth, behind Portugal’s big three.  The reported €2.6m fee received is close to what we paid Elfsborg for him two years ago.

Gus and Maik Nawrocki arrived early in Brendan Rodgers’ second term in charge but both right footers lost out to leftie Liam Scales for the role of left sided central defender.  A loan move to Twente last season restored Gus to the Sweden national team and gave him a the visibility he required to get the move to Braga.

Four league starts and three substitute appearances offered little insight on what kind of player we signed.  The arrival of Nat Phillips late in the summer 2023 transfer window dislodged Gus from the reckoning, for a while, before a period where Nat, Liam, Gus and Maik all saw action in central defence.  Tomoki Iwata even played there on occasion, as Cameron Carter-Vickers was nursed through injury.  Sometimes, less is more.

A red card at Feyenoord was followed by a winning goal when the Dutch side played at Celtic Park.  We hoped this would be a platform, but it proved to be a bookend to Gus’s Celtic career.

Not all signings are successful, but if we continue to receive much the same as we pay for so-called ‘flops’, we are on the right path.

Oldtim

Our good friend Oldtim, Dave Morrison, passed away in the early hours of this morning.  Dave became a friend of the blog in our early weeks.  His first post remains in the memory, as he took to the online world with trepidation at feeling ‘too old’.  That was 21 years ago, more than a few of us caught up with his ‘old’ status since then.  Generous to a fault, Dave’s stories, including the drive to Lisbon in 1967, ensured he made friends wherever he went.  No funeral details are available yet.  Rest in Peace, Dave.

Logging in for the first time in a while to say:

    Requiescat in pace, OldTim67

  2. Sad news re Oldtim, reading some great stories about him on CQN and Sentinel, he was a true gentleman and a great Celtic man.

I was doing a charity 10k in Glasgow, along with a few other CQN’ers, to help bring Kano home from Hospital, Dave had already gave me a sizeable donation and the next time I met him he donated another sizeable amount, astonished at his generosity but he was humble with it.

Condolences to Davies friends and family. Rest in Peace Oldtim

    One love CSC

  4. I never visit these pages these days. However, today I must.

OldTim (Davie Morrison) is the reason I must post. It is thanks to CQN that I met Davie who I would describe as quite simply a good man. A legend and fantastic character.

I spent some fantastic times in his company, The Blane Valley, Aberdour at CQN Golf Days, Grangemouth Gala Days.

I visited Davie a few times in Burnbrae Care Home, I was fortunate enough to be able to visit him.

Today Davie is in a better place, waiting for us and no doubt enjoying the company of all the other Celtic Legends that are also in a better place now.

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  5. RIP Oldtim.

On my rare vists to Paradise I’m not sure if Dena ever introduced me to him at CQN Corner, but she always spoke highly of him.

  6. David Morrison, a Celtic supporter and person the likes of which I had never met before Celtic Quick News and since then have never met his likes again.

Can I share one Incident that happened at the 1st ever Celtic Quick News Golf day at the beautiful Aberdour Golf Club. there had been 50 / 60 golfers this day registered for the golf and some non golfers there for the social events and meal. In the hour before the meal I was talking to Dave when he suddenly said he had to leave the club and return to his hotel for his dinner.

I asked him why he was not eating with us and his reply stunned me.

He said he had no teeth and was afraid he would make a fool of himself eating in this company.

I said to him, that there would not be 1 person in the company who had a full set of teeth and we were all CELTIC SUPPORTERS who did not care whither he had teeth or not and that I was going to lock the lounge doors to keep him in.

I SPOKE TO TAGSY BHOY AND BLANTYRE KEV who were organisers for the golf day, they spoke to the kitchen and another dinner was laid for OLD TIM. he ate his dinner and boy did he enjoy the after dinner speeches, the prize giving for the golfers and then the auctions and raffles and the social conversations for the rest of the night.

DAVE MARSHALL, A VERY HUMB;E MAN WHO WAS WORRIED PEOPLE WOULD BE EMBARRISHED BY HIM.

I loved Dave, MAY HE REST IN PEACE.

He’s arrived at the Pearly Gates and St Peter will turn round to St Michael and say ‘ Is he getting in ? ‘

And Michael will say ‘ For God’s sake, he was at Lisbon , of course he’s getting in ‘

Rest in Peace, Davey – a true gentleman.

Paul, your comments about OLDTIM have had an immediate effect. Many fine comments about a fine man. It is at moments like this, when currently quiet, or silent members are moved to comment. In that vein, how nice it is to see MARTIN42 comment – and provide us with further insight into the man that was OLDTIM.

I remember OLDTIM’s posts in the early days of this place. He certainly deserves the accolades.

    Cheers,

    Weeron.

It is the mark of the man and a tribute to his lasting impact on so many of us that so many of the CQN ‘old guard’ are paying respects to Old Tim on here today. So fortunate to be in his company, he was part of the soul of CQN.

  17. Proud to have met & drank with Old Tim on more than one or two occasions in the Blane Valley.

He was just a real kind, decent friendly, lovable man.

He loved Celtic and through Celtic he made countless friends which sustained him throughout his life, I’m minded of the Fenian song, We may have great men but we’ll never have better.

Rest in Peace Good Celt, you won’t be forgotten.

Reading back on Posts re last night’s game, I agree with sentiments that Celtic are short changing the Irish Support.

There was a great crowd last night and I enjoyed the craic and the drink albeit I had to wait till later in night when I ditched the car before I could really wire in to a few pints.

I understand the need to play youth Players in pre season but families came from miles around and there definitely should have been more first team players on view.

Regarding comments on the pitch, it’s certainly a grass pitch but it is a GAA Stadium & a pitch for GAA games.

Like many places there has been very little rain in recent weeks and despite watering the surface was very hard.

To the fans who came over from Glasgow I hope ye enjoyed the occasion & the City, it was great to see & chat with so many, think I got 4 kisses from Glaswegian lassies throughout the day, mind you the youngest of them was in her mid sixties but seeing I’m 77 , I think I did OK.

  20. RIP OldTim.

As stated by others, many a man on here and elsewhere have devoted many hours and trips to visit the good mhan. Blessings to you all.
