Less is more for central defenders

Gustaf Lagerbielke left an unhappy 2-year stay at Celtic behind him yesterday with a permanent move to Braga, who last season finished fourth, behind Portugal’s big three.  The reported €2.6m fee received is close to what we paid Elfsborg for him two years ago.

Gus and Maik Nawrocki arrived early in Brendan Rodgers’ second term in charge but both right footers lost out to leftie Liam Scales for the role of left sided central defender.  A loan move to Twente last season restored Gus to the Sweden national team and gave him a the visibility he required to get the move to Braga.

Four league starts and three substitute appearances offered little insight on what kind of player we signed.  The arrival of Nat Phillips late in the summer 2023 transfer window dislodged Gus from the reckoning, for a while, before a period where Nat, Liam, Gus and Maik all saw action in central defence.  Tomoki Iwata even played there on occasion, as Cameron Carter-Vickers was nursed through injury.  Sometimes, less is more.

A red card at Feyenoord was followed by a winning goal when the Dutch side played at Celtic Park.  We hoped this would be a platform, but it proved to be a bookend to Gus’s Celtic career.

Not all signings are successful, but if we continue to receive much the same as we pay for so-called ‘flops’, we are on the right path.

Oldtim

Our good friend Oldtim, Dave Morrison, passed away in the early hours of this morning.  Dave became a friend of the blog in our early weeks.  His first post remains in the memory, as he took to the online world with trepidation at feeling ‘too old’.  That was 21 years ago, more than a few of us caught up with his ‘old’ status since then.  Generous to a fault, Dave’s stories, including the drive to Lisbon in 1967, ensured he made friends wherever he went.  No funeral details are available yet.  Rest in Peace, Dave.

we huv got 20 mullions for transfers, …….

why does nobody on the show correct them.

best wished to scott allen btw, gave a great resonse that celtic are the best run club in europe, and couldne help but snigger at the other daftie telling celtic to get the money spent so they dont pay tax on prrofts,

    give me strength.

  6. all the 20 mullions does is release some of the football related cash for signings/wages

it will steady the ship for a season, maybe 2 – in terms of losses

But it’s not touching the sides of a very stinky fandingo to make them a viable business with untold mullions to spunk in the transfer market

As their recent signings have shown

I never had the privilege of meeting OldTim in person but can vouch for his kind heart and generous spirit as he gave me his ticket back in May 2008 for the game at Tannadice where we won the league.

May perpetual light shine upon you Davie.

  19. Sad day for CQN today with the passing of Old Tim 67. And indeed for his wider family of which I am a part.

Davie was my dad’s younger brother. His family also included brothers, Angus, Peter, Ian, Jim, Billy and Ray and younger sister Morag. Ian, Ray and Morag survive him, in Scotland, Canada and Australia respectively. All brought into this world by a wonderful woman Mary MacAteer, who though Scottish born and bred, had, like many Scots of Irish descent origins in Donegal. Collectively a family made up of Macdonalds, Campbells, Morrisons, Andersons, MacAteers and many many more, linking Scotland to Ireland and beyond and all, despite no real Glasgow connection, to Celtic Football Club going back through generations.

For Davie, who had sailed around the oceans while in the merchant navy as a younger man, CQN was in many respects his last port of call, a platform created by Paul Brennan, which enabled him to meet many new friends and many more shared experiences in the latter part of his life, friends such as Blantyre Tim, Lennybhoy, and An Tearmann and so many more, all cherished and loved. A man impossible to dislike and comfortable in any company has sadly left us, with a funeral mass and burial alongside his beloved mother Mary to follow. Here’s to Davie Morrison…..Here’s to Old Tim!

Hello again all you young rebels.

Like everyone else couldn’t let the moment pass without

a word of respect towards a legend like OLD TIM.

He was the one who kept me on these hallowed pages

    many many moons ago.

His tales from the Blane Valley etc, and being my old

watering hole on my gallop to the Gallowgate brought a

    sigh filled with nostalgia.

God bless you Dave and condolences to the family of a

    great bhoy 💚

  27. Very sad to read about the passing of Old Tim who was an established poster on CQN when I joined in 2006. A real Celtic man if ever there was one. I never met him but it was evident that he was a generous, sociable person by reading the comments of those who knew him. I was always touched by the generosity of his friends who went out of their way to check up on him, visit him and see that he was ok during periods of ill health. It was great to see so many CQN legends who have been missing in action for months and years to pay their respects and recount anecdotes about Old Tim. I was especially pleased to see Zysbec our Polish friend making time to speak of Old Tim. I hope his beloved Legia have a great season.

My condolences to the family of Dave and to all those on the CQN family who were his friends. May he Rest In Peace. 🙏🙏🙏

Boondock thanks for your thoughts re Texas. I happen to live here and don’t relate too much to the State but the human impact has bonded me closer to the people of TX and the tragic victims of a devastating natural disaster. Truly awful event.
