Less is more signing panic sets in

152

40 years ago, with Aberdeen and Dundee United strutting their stuff, the mantra was ‘Celtic and Rangers ruin young players’.  The Glasgow clubs had the talent market on their doorstep, but had an appalling record of development.  By contrast, young players were given extended runs in the first team by Alex Ferguson and Jim McLean; which worked.

Gustaf Lagerbielke is on his way out of Celtic today having withered on the Lennoxtown vines.  It is a story as old as the game itself and is why we were able to sign Callum Osmand from Fulham this week.  Callum knew his likely fate at Craven Cottage (or more likely a non-descript pitch somewhere else in London) and fancied his chances at Celtic more.  This is a considerable compensation; Callum clearly spoke to Matt O’Riley, not Gus, or a few others we could mention.

Gus will look back on his 10 appearances for Celtic and remember partnering Liam Scales to a pivotal win at Ibrox and scoring a late winner to record Celtic’s first home Champions League win in a decade.  The rest of his time will soon drop from memory.  Few of us would be able to give a proper assessment of the player, as we saw so little of him.  Maybe signing three central defenders while losing one in the same window was a tactical blunder.  Sometimes, less is more.

I’ll be interested to see what people say if Khuln goes.

Will it still be “he’s not kicked a ball since hi head was turned, moaning faced git so well shot of him” or will itl be the “cashing in and weakening the squad to stockpile cash” argument that wi ll be the more popular position?

  2. i dont buy the kuhn head turned meant less interest mantra, or that his malaise was 2nd half of the season.

sure his form dipped and he got taken off a few times but he still scored some big goals in march april and may.

Nick Khun could be playing against us in the Como Cup in 3 weeks time if both teams win or lose their initial matches.

Good luck to him for the rest of his career. He did well for us.

Players come, players go. The support and the club will always be here.

  5. Hopefully we move quickly for a new winger, to replace Kuhn (6th fastest player in CL last season). if he does go, of course.

  6. I gave up being upset when players left, a long time ago. Worst was when Kenny went. Sold him for a record £440,000 l, I think and bought quite a few duds.

  7. Paul – the article not showing on the main site page (access via link on previous thread).

As for Khun, he played on the wing because of his lightening pace – but he rarely used it. Confidence / coaching / will ? Only played half a season and for me , let the side down in the cup final. His refusal to go outside , use his assets and show hunger for the win ended it for me. James forrest did more in the 15mins he played before injury.

    Great business Celtic !

What we lack now is speed in the midfield – None of our current 5-6 midfielders has any pace to attack and track back – none ! its a Rodgers weakness!

Kuhn wouldn’t train or play if he had a broken finger nail,BR wanted rid of him

Astonishing bit of business from Celtic. Scoring in the CL is more important to Como than a petted lip in Parkhead.

  10. Como have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Nicolas Kuhn from Celtic for £16.4m.

The winger has had plenty of interest this summer despite his explosive form tailing off towards the end of last season.

  11. Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Italian side Como have agreed a deal to sign Nicolas Kühn from Celtic. The Italian journalist has confirmed that the Scottish Champions are willing to sell the German winger for €19m, just eighteen months after he joined the from Rapid Vienna.

In a post on Twitter, Romano confirmed that Cesc Fabregas’ side have swooped to sign the creative player.

Another great day at Wimbledon, Cliff Richard turned up but the good weather meant he wasn’t required to sing.👍

Nicolas Kuhn gave up looking for a German barber in Glasgow when he needed a Herr Cut.💈

Two nights in the big smoke before heading back to the big cook in TX.

I think that’s good business for Kuhn – after his purple patch he didn’t look a 16MM player to me.

    Good luck to him.

He didn`t create much in the SCF vs big mighty Aberdeen who taught us that wingers are just so yesterday.

Unless…..we use wingers to play on the break like MON did, when he excellently utilised Agathe, and Petta (in a few games), with out balls over their heads for them to run onto and cause carnage for the opposition, Ajax away springs to mind.

A winger without a ball to run onto is a man short, and if teams wise up like Aberdeen did, then we’ll have wasted a lot of money on useless wingers.

If the Como manager has been watching Khun being wrongly utilised and knows how to correct that, watch for Khun becoming a big star in Italy, and against better quality opposition as well.

    Good luck to him.

Willie Haughey is at CP almost every home game.

I can’t imagine him being more present than he is really.

Also I don’t see any significant shift in ownership any time soon either.

  24. Bejasus, I occasionally drop in to FascistFascist for a wee laugh, but what level of education do you have to have suffered to come up with this (or, alternatively, what chemicals do you have to ingest?)

“How much can we bring in with sales? Cifuentes, Davies and Dowell should get us £5M, I would try and sell Matondo, Ridvan, Propper, Dessers, Danilo and Butland and if (big if I know) we managed that that would be an extra £10M. Now depending on his contract then we might need to sell Rasking for say £15M. With the money the the yanks will give too would that mean the manager could have the best part of £50M to spend.

I know it’s all if and buts, but we need a manager with a track record of buying and developing a team with that amount of cash available.”

Raskin £15m? ‘The money the Yanks will give (us)? ‘The best part of £50m to spend?

Industrial quantities of deludemol there, methinks.

  25. Haven’t posted for ages but read every day……does anyone else think that our other left back is going to be Andy Robertson?

Pros and cons and all that.

I’d take him in a minute…not just for his ability but I think we’re maybe approaching a war situation and Brendan might say….fek this…..this is my legacy….I want every top player i can get….and Andy Roberton is as Celtuc daft as we are and like KT could play 2 or 3 different
