Less is more signing panic sets in

152

40 years ago, with Aberdeen and Dundee United strutting their stuff, the mantra was ‘Celtic and Rangers ruin young players’.  The Glasgow clubs had the talent market on their doorstep, but had an appalling record of development.  By contrast, young players were given extended runs in the first team by Alex Ferguson and Jim McLean; which worked.

Gustaf Lagerbielke is on his way out of Celtic today having withered on the Lennoxtown vines.  It is a story as old as the game itself and is why we were able to sign Callum Osmand from Fulham this week.  Callum knew his likely fate at Craven Cottage (or more likely a non-descript pitch somewhere else in London) and fancied his chances at Celtic more.  This is a considerable compensation; Callum clearly spoke to Matt O’Riley, not Gus, or a few others we could mention.

Gus will look back on his 10 appearances for Celtic and remember partnering Liam Scales to a pivotal win at Ibrox and scoring a late winner to record Celtic’s first home Champions League win in a decade.  The rest of his time will soon drop from memory.  Few of us would be able to give a proper assessment of the player, as we saw so little of him.  Maybe signing three central defenders while losing one in the same window was a tactical blunder.  Sometimes, less is more.

Kuhn is great business. Hit the sweet spot. Did a great job for us and we sell for a massive profit for reinvestment. His heart didn’t seem to be in it latterly so a move suits all parties.

That’s the model going forward, not this pap about buying projects from the Korean second tier who couldn’t trap a bag of cement….

A Rodgers signing? Vindication given all the jibes on here from our host? On the same day we we sold a Mark Lawwell special for a million pound loss?

  5. I suppose this means Balikwisha will be signed shortly,to replace Kuhn.We could not afford the £5 million for him, until Kuhn was punted !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔.

So now we will be around£20 million up in the window, once the CHs go.

A final word on Kuhn.He did not have a big drop in form in the second half of the season, the whole fekin team did.Somebody makes a comment, hordes pile on.Maybe some new to watching football, but wingers form does fluctuate more. The position ,stuck with a touchline a yard from you,and a big hairy assed full back in front of you, backed by the other 10 defending in their own half,is not Winger paradise. He done brilliant for us .Loads of goals, assists, and 4 goals in the CL.

“Aye,but his form dipped” Just fek right off.

  6. can i recommend this book for those who like industrial and sporting history.

No doubt to me, his socialist roots made that first great Liverpool team.

Also why him and Jock were the best of friends.

i agree, we peaked for bayern away and had a comedown in performance levels.

4 cl games in jan and feb is new to us.

but i disagree we slumper really badly. we still pumped team often, scoring more than 3 in several games.

people are stuck on losing shitely to something called rangers.

Seen a terrible review of Conor Coady, from a Leicester fan, allegedly going to Sevco

  10. given the money we have brought in this window – Celtic could spend $30m and be net net !

Where do we gain advantage? Well, buying players for 9, 10 , 11m is no guarantee. We have obviously brought in quality for 2-4m and seen value on the pitch and traded successfully. This should continue!

Advantage for me is wages! bring in 2-3 top experienced players and pay them top wages. Never guarantees of course but risk is minimized with seasoned professionals.

I mentioned before – we need speed in the middle if the park. Current midfielders are too slow to break forward and getting back to defend. All of them struggle!!

To me , the Kuhn fee £16.4m seems fair . The whole player valuation thing is subject to so many wierd and wonderful intricacies and circumstances . For example , who would have thought we would sell Jota for £25m and get the same player back for £9m ?

No point hanging on to khun if he wants to leave, best to make as much money from his transfer as possible and move on. Hopefully Gus also gets his move over the line. They will follow bain, taylor and shlupp out the door from the 1st team pool. So far it looks like 5 out, 5 in.

There is another 7 players in and around the 1st team who would also benefit from going in welsh, rocky, tilio, palma, Kenny, Kwon, yang and montgomary.

At a minimum we need another 4/5 players:

    2 wingers or

1 striker and 1 winger (if diazan is being pushed back out wide)

    1 DCM

    1 leftback and

1 centreback (if we can get better than current lot and move one of scales or trusty on)

    Make it happen celtic

  18. can we finally sign a central defender who can dominate the air defensively and offensively. We tend to target the 6ft player! not tall enough! I cringe every time a cross comes into our box and I expect nothing from. our corners! Trusty is shorter when he jumps!!

  19. We have according to BR,been setting our targets since January.Romano has been saying we want Balikwisha,so we will see.Maybe I am basing my worries on the other recent Japanese CH we signed, with a lot more experience than this guy,but while very neat and tidy, did not have the dig for the SPFL.We can only wait.

Apart from that,I now really expect players in right away.No excuses.

With,it seems, many fans boycotting the Newcastle game,it will be interesting to see how many scumbags turn up at The Lavvy at the weekend, considering the Pup they’ve been sold.

  20. Turkeybhoy is correct, the idea that a winger should just go for the touchline and get a cross in, even one as quick as Kuhn, is for the birds and yet you will still get usual suspects on here advocating that very same thing and criticising a player who scored over twenty goals. No no no it is all about timing now, and even more so all about momentum, as in the play going forward. Johnston and yes Ralston are just as likely to get a cross in as Kuhn, Wang or Forrest. Difficult concept for some I know…..

  21. Stebhoy,

Take it you missed the Atalanta game?.Trusty must have headed 30 clearances out the box,,Scales not many behind.Trusty had the most headed clearances for Sheffield, in the Championship before we signed him.Whatever it is,its not Ariel ability.Organization, maybe.

CCV is small defending crosses,,but not allowed to say it.Pick on the others.

    boycott?

come on now, that is straight out of the rag papers.

boycotting something means you have a fundamental deep rooted objection to it, and you will be actively arguing against it.

i reckon most folk have just thought ‘na’ and not thought much else of it.

    hardly a boycott scenario

  23. lets all do the huddle on

we will play close on 30 competitive home game this season that we pay for.

being asked to pay yet more for a friendly is definitely a take it or leave it scenario.

but im sure the 20000 on the season ticket waiting list will all be there 🙄

  29. Celtic Mac,

Yep,21 goals,14 assists,4 CL goals, but he was doing something wrong.Cutting inside, taking defenders with him, leaving tons of space for AJ to cross,RUBBISH.

    The mind boggles.

  30. Incredible utter contempt and abuse now directed at Murray for his tenure now over on FF. The dignified silence which followed denial was a scab best unpicked. Now his book launch and lies really have exposed and magnified all he took from them.
