Less is more signing panic sets in

152

40 years ago, with Aberdeen and Dundee United strutting their stuff, the mantra was ‘Celtic and Rangers ruin young players’.  The Glasgow clubs had the talent market on their doorstep, but had an appalling record of development.  By contrast, young players were given extended runs in the first team by Alex Ferguson and Jim McLean; which worked.

Gustaf Lagerbielke is on his way out of Celtic today having withered on the Lennoxtown vines.  It is a story as old as the game itself and is why we were able to sign Callum Osmand from Fulham this week.  Callum knew his likely fate at Craven Cottage (or more likely a non-descript pitch somewhere else in London) and fancied his chances at Celtic more.  This is a considerable compensation; Callum clearly spoke to Matt O’Riley, not Gus, or a few others we could mention.

Gus will look back on his 10 appearances for Celtic and remember partnering Liam Scales to a pivotal win at Ibrox and scoring a late winner to record Celtic’s first home Champions League win in a decade.  The rest of his time will soon drop from memory.  Few of us would be able to give a proper assessment of the player, as we saw so little of him.  Maybe signing three central defenders while losing one in the same window was a tactical blunder.  Sometimes, less is more.

    Huddle,

    That’s your choice.

Look up the meaning of ” Boycott”.I know why it means.Think you will find it is very apt for the situation. Not my fault its the correct terminology.

im not making any ‘expression of protest’.

  2. lets all do the huddle on

but im not disagreeing that it shouldnt be 25 quid for a ticket.

so there will be a load of folk who made a decision based on the price.

would they have all went if it had been 20 quid (as it should have).

    not so sure.

Football clubs make managers, players and agents rich.

I’ll bet that Nic Kuhn’s agent makes more from his move this Summer than all the executive directors salaries added together for the year.

Some football clubs pay their footballing staff more than the company’s turnover every year

Going over old ground, but pre season games ,and first League Cup or European Qualifier was included ST on the same day another jersey is for sale

I expect we will sign players of quality in the next few weeks. Hopefully we will end up with a better team and overall squad. No problem with a few punts so long as they have a real chance to develop. Celtic will spend less than what is brought in for players. Signing players based on good scounting is far better than signing guy with big price tags without the scouting to back it up.

  6. itscalledthemalvinas on

I think the reason that this pre season game isn’t selling out is Newcastle aren’t a big team.

Celtic supporters aren’t interested in them. They are on a par with Wolves,Leicester,Sheffield Wednesday. Get a bigger crowd playing newly crowned Johnstone Birth and ramming 12 past them

  7. Stephenbhoyboy on

The world is full of quality players that need a chance. Celtic need to be identifying and giving them a chance before richer clubs do. Hopefully the sale of khun and gus is just the beginning of the departure of frindge players and more signings of the KT, Ben variety

17.2; 16.4; 19; 20, 17.6 – no-one can pinpoint the fee Celtic has got for Kuhn from Como.

    It’s impossible !

An amazing bit of business; chapeau suits !!

  11. No boycott here for the Newcastle game,

The truth is far more simple, can’t be bothered making a commitment in advance for a non competitive game.

    HH.

  12. We knew Kuhn wanted away in January, subsequently his form dipped.

It must be said a great bit of business by the club. I wonder if this Como competition was part of a pre arranged deal arranged months ago.

  14. Celtic were linked with a couple of moves for Scottish born fullbacks to supplement Kieran Tierney in the left back position. Josh Doig was one but another was Hearts’ James Penrice.

However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the ex-Livi fullback is set to make the move to AEK Athens this summer. Posting on Twitter, the Italian journalist revealed that PFA Scotland Team of the Year featured defender would move to Greece.

    Good morning BRRB.

The blog is quiet. Close season and all that. Stay out of the pubs and keep an eye on An Tearmann for me. Have a good day.

Meeting AT at Celtic Park for John Clark funeral. Unlikely to get near St Mary’s but the service will be shown on the Internet.

  16. Roughly 42 and 49 days until we have our biggest 2 games of the season. We still have time on our side.

Accepting we won’t always be agent’s and players first pick destination I really hope we have a plan and some targets lined up.

The other good bit is likely 3 competitive domestic games before the first tie. Although our opponents will be more ‘battle hardened’ having been through the play offs we at least will have some competitive game time.

Our rivals across the city kick off their biggest game in 17 days time. Their squad and playing style is getting a total revamp so plenty of challenges there. I really hope they ship out a few of their tried and tested like Raskin and Dessers and take the field with limited experience.

Why are they relevant to us ? For me any negative momentum there is good. Any sniff of success is the opposite. I certainly don’t want them near sharing any CL tv pot for Scotland. Far better they start the season on the back foot with a new manager.

Ange achieved what Martin is trying to do (turning around such a deficit v them) in a similar situation and so complacency should be our enemy. We had some good creative signings. Not really sensing that from them so far mind you.

Evening BRRB time for a pre weekend Swally. Not long till the fitba starts.

Spikeys I see Putins Russia has just recognised Afghanistans medieval government. Two of your favourite places. You’ll be pleased about that.

We need a solid centre half in the door asap. CVC is a bit injury prone.

  18. spikeysauldman on

TBoy – have never been a fan of Putin’s Russisa dont know where you get that from. As for Afghanistan ? Again confused. Who in their right minds would back a country run by lunatic, religious fundamentalists from the dark ages ?

  19. Taurangabhoy on

Spikeys good that we have some common ground then. Your last video link promoted countries with dictatorships, suggesting that western democracies were weak minded or in other words didn’t say what they wanted to hear. 12 days straight work for me on the turps Friday night so don’t take anything I say seriously. Anyway have a good weekend.

  20. spikeysauldman on

and hail hail to you too. As you have said (in other words), sometimes good to focus on what folk have in common and not solely on their differences.

  22. Good luck to Gus, he simply didn’t have the pace to hold a high line in a Celtic defence – he can talk about that one day with Shane Duffy.

Hopefully lessons have been taken on board. Looking at my shares isa this morning, I see Celtic shares have jumped near 30% in recent weeks. I assume this is off the back an anticipated strong year end position.

Trophies and record profits seem to go hand in hand with our Brendan.

  23. bournesouprecipe on

Transfer idle chat, still expect Brendan Rodgers will smash Celtic’s record fee for the second successive season. If not, we’ll buy players towards a new record total spend by August’s window closure.

A lifetime of thrift followed by imaginable Celtic wealth, how poignant that on a day a legendary figure that cost Celtic nothing, passes by Celtic Park for the last time.

I’ll be at the Newcastle game with a friend, my son and 2 grandsons. No season tickets.

Grandsons are age 6 and 9. It will be the 6-year-old’s first game.

My friend and I (65+) paid £17, my son £25 and grandsons £12 each.

It will be my pal’s first game in 4 years. We were both season ticket holders and went to every game until his wife contracted dementia and he was virtually housebound looking after her. Sadly she passed away a couple of months ago and he is now able to resume his Celtic supporting duties, starting with the Newcastle game.

    Looking forward to it.

  28. I’m slightly concerned that Celtic is about to sell all it’s prize assets, not like them is it !!!!!

So at the moment we have our strongest centre back as an injury doubt for the start of the season, we have loaned out the only other strong tackling, header winning central defender while leaving ourselves with Trusty, Welsh and Scales as the only options if CCV doesn’t make the start of the season.

I hope Brendan has two better quality centre halves lined up to improve upon the three we have fit at the moment.
