Lesson on doing diligence

87

We all have a fondness for Kyogo who did so much for Celtic.  Like Shunsuke Nakamura 20 years ago, he arrived at a club on the ropes and applied his magic to restore Celtic as champions.  There are many highlights: goals in cup finals, the Champions League and so many against Newco, whom he tortured more than any player since Larsson.  Larsson is our only better striker this century.

He is the ultimate professional, so I understand why he wanted to challenge himself in France.  At 30, time was running out to extend himself at a higher level.  Now he is a lesson on how important it is to do your diligence.  Rennes were a club in trauma who needed salvation, but it was never going to come in the shape of Kyogo.

Teams at the bottom of a league are less attracted to diminutive strikers.  They need players who can compete for a clearance out of defence and hold onto the ball.  Kyogo excels at finding and exploiting space inside the box, which is seldom a problem for sides near the bottom of the table.  Decent dilligence would have alerted Kyogo.

He is too good a player and impressed too much at Celtic to expire in France.  Someone will move for him, maybe even in a top league.  But his days of being a first choice striker for a Champions League side are surely gone.

  15. Kyogos new agent has done ok out of all this. A few stories about him signing for man city last summer, a swap move that fell into his lap, a cut of an artificially high transfer fee, a months later another move and another cut. Great work for himself, terrible for his client. The agent probably did his own due diligence on the deal and saw a very nice bit of business for him.

Kyogo might have been sold on the idea of working with Sampaoli at Rennes. His style might well have appealed if it hadnt been at a club that was heading towards relegation. Unfortunately for Kyogo they sacked him, Kyogo ended up on the bench and Rennes ended up 12th.

A very substantial part of negotiating a deal for an incoming or outgoing Celtic player is having to deal with these sharks.

  16. Ref – Manuel Ramos Asencio

Founder and first Captain of Real Betis.

I have a wee theory of my own, long held and making some assumptions from Brandan Sweeneys early years book, and McCallums war years books.

From Manuels wiki page we know this –

Born on 11 January 1892 in Isla Cristina, Andalusia, Ramos Asencio was sent to Scotland at the age of 12, to complete his studies at the Catholic St Joseph’s College, Dumfries, which had been founded in 1875 by Brother Walfrid, who years later, in 1887, also founded Celtic in Glasgow.[1][3] During his stay in Britain, Ramos Asencio developed a deep interest in football, often travelling to Glasgow to attended Celtic’s matches, making several close friends at the club in the process.[4]

So he was in Scotland in Dumfries in 1904. The year when Celtic changed from vertical to horizontal stripes. He may have seen Celtic play in their original kit, and offcourse green and white is the colours of the analucia flag.

I dont think it is too much to suggest he loved the colours, maybe knew Brother Walfrid from time at St Jospehs, and probably was friendly with Maley and others. Maley himself owned a sports outfitters on the salt-market, within spitting distance of the Shipbank inn.

On returing to Seville, there was only 1 football team, Sevilla, but some internal politics led to the breakaway team of Betis Bamplonie, With Manuel a founder member, the team originally played in light blue. When that kit faded, Manuel took it on himself to source new colours.

He choose green and white like the Celtic.

What is not know is where did they get the first kit from ? Made in Spain, or requested to Maley in Glasgow, and did he send them the old Celtic jerseys ? Plausible yes.

What else is know is that Betis regulalry played games against Scottish seamen who docked near Seville.

    So it is a mibbies.

I like to think it is what happened.

As a ps, when we were in Seville we passed the Betis stadium and I actually wish we were playing there

    as a pps.

Last nights kit, if adidas want to mess with our hoops, they could add yellow piping or stripes for the numbers and letters, looks much better than the dark dark green that looks black black black

  19. Was up at Parkhead today. Did our nosey and asked what was all the building work directly outside the Jock Stein.

Was informed it wasn’t building work , it was the new pitch lying alongside the old pitch.

Old pitch seemingly being disposed of environmentally.

I wonder what that means ?

We all thought they would cut it into a million pieces and sell each for a fiver. 😀

  20. Classy statement from Scott Bain on his time at Celtic on his leaving.

Didn’t get a lot of game time but I always got the impression that he brought something positive to the party, to training, and to the squad in general. Could should a few of the outfield players, with the odd mistake it has to be said, how to make a forward pass. Wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
