Lessons are needed from Barcelona and Paris performances

Salzburg are the real deal.  For years, backed by sponsor Red Bull, they have deployed one of the most expensive wage bills outside of Europe’s big five leagues.  They are in the Europa League due to an away goals defeat to Red Star Belgrade (who drew their opening Champions League tie with Napoli), but the Austrians have won their six games since, scoring 21 goals in the process.

That run included a 2-3 win at Leipzig, one of only two defeats the Germans have suffered in 17 competitive games stretching back to April.  They sit seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga after a flawless nine wins from nine.

From a technical perspective, this will be a new challenge for Celtic this season.  Our biggest problem, both domestically and at home, has been breaking down packed defences, Salzburg will have no such inhibitions.  They attacked throughout in Leipzig, successfully chasing an 89th minute winner while most European teams on their travels would settle for a point.

I have been critical of how open Celtic were against Barcelona (7-0) and PSG (0-5, 7-1) in recent seasons.  Whatever it is that St Mirren could conjure against Celtic last month, we were unable to find the same fortitude when facing a similar disparity in resources.

Salzburg are not Barcelona or PSG, but they will comfortably despatch any team who are defensively soft.  We might not win, but we should aim to be competitive tomorrow night.

I took the part of your post that piqued my interest.

    Is that seriously your explanation?

You took that part to have a snide wee dig for some reason. If you’ve got an issue with what I’m posting , post it, don’t hide behind daft remarks .

Sorry cant take the credit for the funny (imho) paragraph! Away an get a S>O>H.

  4. Ye know, its probably the the reason AweNaw, and many other good posters dont post here any more. Lets face it, posts have dramatically reduced especially over the last 12 months. Plus there are many more Celtic blogs nowadays. I have to ask myself! Do I really need a big brother Stazi-like jobsworth looking over my shoulder?

    Short answer. Nah.

    Good Post by BGFC overnight.

Too many people think posting on CQN to advocate a boycott is somehow influentual as if there is going to be a mass movement initiated from ” I read somebody online last night saying I should stop going to watch Celtic and, you know what, I think I will” . The delusion continues with the fantasy that this is going to be met by a flood of “Aye, I read that!” and “Me Too”.

If you want an effective boycott, and BGFC is right; we should not emphasise the Murrayfield issue, then we need to agitate and persuade within the circles of the CSA and Celtic Trust, or form a current Celts for Change to address the bigger issues of corruption within the Scottish game. That requires real work, not a back bar call for a revolution that gets forgotten by the 4th pint.

Otherwise, we just come across like South Park’s Mr. Mackey saying “Drugs are bad m’kay!”

    ========================

I’ve passed on the guts of the Celts for Change 2018 idea to CSA and CST, but it would help if others were to contact both in their own way.

  9. This decision by the sfa is just what what the sfa always do , LOOK AFTER SEVCO . The next time they are drawn first out the hat in cup ties at hampden , it will revert back to the original first out the hat gets prime slot . Is so obvious it’s unreal . I’m sorry to say our club get what they deserve ,they continue to accept without question whatever is pushed onto them . I don’t go to away games now I’m not so fit , back then I attended every match , so I know how hard it is to not don the kit and follow the hoops , but I feel it is overdue that the celtic support need to take a stand , and say keep your tickets , these games are high profile for the sfa and Scottish football , big Jock said football without fans is nothing , I would have taken it farther , football without the celtic support is nothing . The club are not going to stand up and be counted , that leaves the celtic support to fight this battle . A cup semi ,broadcast worldwide with no celtic fans present will bring the much needed question WHAT IS HAPPENING UP THERE . It will bring the bias of the sfa into open play , and believe me they won’t want that . It won’t take many actions from the celtic support to see this mob put in its place . We have endured these cheating ways all my celtic supporting days , enough is enough. Let’s now for gods sake sacrifice a few cup games , embarrass the cheats who run our game solely for the good of one club . So come on leaders of our huge supporters clubs .for gods sake bit the bullet and take them on .HH

  10. I have the greatest respect for the anger of fans at the SPFL decision to ignore the Celtic request.Even for calls for a boycott, although I never want to see our team without our support, but I understand the anger.

What I dont understand,is what some fanswant Celtic to do next. What action can the club take? All I keep hearing is,”Must do something”.What do you propose?Withdraw from the competition?I dont see any other line of action.,

,in fact, there is none. The usual suspects on,just determined to batter into the Board. Its what they live for it seems.Just how a decision taken by the SPFL,has anything to do with our Board,is beyond me.How could we have affected that?.Its OK to be full of bluster, but what exactly are your proposals for what we should do next?
