Lessons are needed from Barcelona and Paris performances

430

Salzburg are the real deal.  For years, backed by sponsor Red Bull, they have deployed one of the most expensive wage bills outside of Europe’s big five leagues.  They are in the Europa League due to an away goals defeat to Red Star Belgrade (who drew their opening Champions League tie with Napoli), but the Austrians have won their six games since, scoring 21 goals in the process.

That run included a 2-3 win at Leipzig, one of only two defeats the Germans have suffered in 17 competitive games stretching back to April.  They sit seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga after a flawless nine wins from nine.

From a technical perspective, this will be a new challenge for Celtic this season.  Our biggest problem, both domestically and at home, has been breaking down packed defences, Salzburg will have no such inhibitions.  They attacked throughout in Leipzig, successfully chasing an 89th minute winner while most European teams on their travels would settle for a point.

I have been critical of how open Celtic were against Barcelona (7-0) and PSG (0-5, 7-1) in recent seasons.  Whatever it is that St Mirren could conjure against Celtic last month, we were unable to find the same fortitude when facing a similar disparity in resources.

Salzburg are not Barcelona or PSG, but they will comfortably despatch any team who are defensively soft.  We might not win, but we should aim to be competitive tomorrow night.

I think that very much depends on the post for example

‘’We are cash rich because of Brendan, nothing to do with Lawwell, who is doing his utmost to get rid of him”

If I posted the above which of course I wouldn’t because I’ve no knowledge of Brendan Rodgers relationship with Peter Lawwell, but if I did, because its contentious at best and highly controversial at worst, I’d be able to substantiate what I posted in public.

The bit about ‘cash rich’ could easily be Peter Lawwell’s “fault” as well given he negotiates all the transfers whilst Brendan says he doesn’t.

Factually based posts get read and not commented on all day long.

Again no problem with what you posted as long as ‘we’ are prepared to ‘back them up’ with evidence from which we formulate our opinions, as in your case where it appears to date, to have been none.

Anecdotal evidence leading to conjecture or conjecture leading to anecdotal evidence?

Either way you are basing your opinion on what you chose to believe, whilst Brendan Rodgers has publicly confirmed his happy clapper status more than once.

    Why should we be different?

DD……………we need to stop taking it up the backdoor, they have moved

the goal posts to suit those and such as those.

  5. Time for the Association, affiliation, trust etc, to get together and organise an official Bhoy- cott, of not only this up game, but now all away games

Yes take a token 1000 tickets (more than we will actually get at huncastle, pittodrieand the hovel)

Support Celtic only, and forget the rest

And as for Celtic, now show your hand and take on the SFA, you have the evidence as provided by Res12

    Or forever bend over

As holders of this League Cup trophy, we should withdraw from this cup and not give them their trophy back. Scunnered if Celtic PLC do nothing here.

  7. Totally totally sickened by how my club and its fans are treated in Scotland

    neganon is very often correct

In past 6-7 years I have only contributed financially to Celtic

Not one other club in Scotland will ever receive another penny from me

Time for Celtic to stand up for our club, and it’s fans

  8. Lawwell and the Board are likely to do feck all because the money keeps pouring in. Celtic supporters will rightly turn out in their numbers to support the team at Murrayfield. The Club need to grow a pair and call this farce out. The positions of Doncaster and Blair are untenable after what has transpired here.

Totally agree about Salzburg , Paul67. It shows, in the footballing terms, the EL is where we’re at.

  11. I have often thought that someone in a senior position at Celtic Park, is subject of a blackmail plot,I have absolutely no evidence. Why does the most successful and powerful club in the country,be constantly done over by the authorities? Why no public statements on EBTs,titles to be stripped ,asking for the existing rules to be applied fairly? The list goes on and on…..

  12. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

I don’t agree one iota with the process about how we got to this semi-final arrangement – agree almost all of the comments on that – Police / SPFL and possibly SFA all complicit.

However, that said – and looking at the fixture only in isolation – I actually don’t mind playing Hertz at Muraryfield earlier on the Sunday – I’ll give you 10 reasons…

    1. It isn’t Hampden.

    2. It isn’t Hampden.

    3. Murrayfield is a much better stadium than Hampden.

    4. It isn’t Hampden.

    5. A good proportion of fans – not all, of course – will be able to get back from from Edinburgh in time to see the Huns get pumped in the later game on the telly.

    6. It isn’t Hampden.

    7. We’ll pump the Hertz anyway.

    8. It isn’t Hampden.

    9. We don’t have to travel back from Edinburgh (or even worse, from Hampden) after a 7:45 night kickoff that might not finish ’till 10:45.

    10. It isn’t Hampden.

Celtic supporters rightly turning out only adds weight to these decisions – sorry,

    and I accept fans choice

But, now is the correct Time for Celtic fans to take positive action, and show we will take no more

Force change, and let the watching international public see what we have to put up with

This action includes Celtic putting out a very clear message on why it’s fans are taking action, as the media will not be supporting us, so get on front foot

  15. Totally shafted again. We’ve been cheated in practically every game this season, now this. This cannot stand. Tell them to ram their pashy cup, never liked it anyway.
