Lessons are needed from Barcelona and Paris performances

Salzburg are the real deal.  For years, backed by sponsor Red Bull, they have deployed one of the most expensive wage bills outside of Europe’s big five leagues.  They are in the Europa League due to an away goals defeat to Red Star Belgrade (who drew their opening Champions League tie with Napoli), but the Austrians have won their six games since, scoring 21 goals in the process.

That run included a 2-3 win at Leipzig, one of only two defeats the Germans have suffered in 17 competitive games stretching back to April.  They sit seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga after a flawless nine wins from nine.

From a technical perspective, this will be a new challenge for Celtic this season.  Our biggest problem, both domestically and at home, has been breaking down packed defences, Salzburg will have no such inhibitions.  They attacked throughout in Leipzig, successfully chasing an 89th minute winner while most European teams on their travels would settle for a point.

I have been critical of how open Celtic were against Barcelona (7-0) and PSG (0-5, 7-1) in recent seasons.  Whatever it is that St Mirren could conjure against Celtic last month, we were unable to find the same fortitude when facing a similar disparity in resources.

Salzburg are not Barcelona or PSG, but they will comfortably despatch any team who are defensively soft.  We might not win, but we should aim to be competitive tomorrow night.

    Fine by me, all I am saying, imo, is our Peter isn’t the god that so many on here think he is, take away what Brendan has delivered the past couple of seasons and we are back to the RD era again, IMO.

  4. Very strong A for me.

    I would recommend that all those who feel Celtic should do more than issue a condemnatory statement let their views be known via:

    PS I am pleased that Celtic have at least issued a Statement and have not hung about in doing so either.

    FOLLOWING today’s SPFL Board meeting, at which it was decided that Celtic’s Betfred League Cup semi-final against Hearts will now take place at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Sunday, October 28, with the other semi-final between Rangers and Aberdeen being held at Hampden later the same day, Celtic Football Club has released the following statement.

    The SPFL Board’s decision not to hold a ballot to decide the venues of the forthcoming semi-final matches is both irrational and discriminatory.

    Celtic recognised there was a genuinely difficult problem to resolve. All we asked for was equity of treatment – in other words, a simple ballot of which game went to which venue, so that all clubs would have a 50-50 chance of playing at Hampden.

    We understand that those bodies consulted, including the police and broadcasters, had no preference whatsoever on which match should take place at each venue and, therefore, there was only one appropriate method of reaching a fair outcome.

    The SPFL Board have been unable to produce logic or reason for turning down our modest request. Instead, they have arbitrarily decided that a chosen game should stay at Hampden and the other should go to Murrayfield.

    The interests of our club and supporters have been subordinated to a diktat from the SPFL board which is as unfair as it was unnecessary.

    Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell was excused from the SPFL board meeting due to the subject under discussion.

    McKenna will miss home game v. St Mirren and, wait for it ………………………………………………………….. away game at Tynecastle!!

    McKinnes should be mad at Madhun – correct red card on Saturday = 1/2 game missed. Correcting his honest mistake = missing two games, one against the current league leaders.

    The statement is a good start … but two thoughts:

    1. A statement alone is simply a sop to the fans. If we were discriminated against, then action must follow.

    2. If Celtic can issue a statement about this, it seems to put an end to the excuse that Celtic could not speak out about various issues in the past (on which Celtic have stayed remarkably silent) for fear of retribution, etc.

  16. The SFA, the SPL & the SPFL conspire to shaft us every which way, they condon EBT’s, they allow illegal registration of players for a proven period of nearly a decade, they instigate a sham of an inquiry, LNS, they produce an illegal document called the 5WA, they issue licences to our rivals when they shouldn’t have been issued, in the process stealing serious amounts of money from us, I am a shareholder, so they stole from me, they break every rule in the book to accomodate our rivals, they shoehorn them into the league system at the expense of others more worthy, our club say nothing, nada, zip, sweet f all, other than we are surprised, yet they make a mealie mouthed statement about our game getting switched to Edinburgh, over to you Neganon2

  17. Tottenham need to put Victor up for a corner and sign an eighteen year old from Airdrie.

  18. Are we the only club that actively refuses to throw it’s weight around in the SFA and SPFL? CFC, as usual, too little too late….

  19. The statement doesn’t do it for me. We are the only semi-finalist playing away in Europe on the Thursday night and yet not only do we have to move our tie without an equitable or fair process, we have to kick off early. it is an utter joke and Celtic PLC need to seriously grow a set and stand up for the fans or face serious unrest amongst the support. What with this, the way we are refereed, the transfer window shambles and the inaction on Res 12, it feels to me like things are coming to a head very soon. Put up or shut up PLC and if it’s the latter, you do so at your peril.

  21. A few hundred or even a few thousand boycotting Murrayfield will not make an impact.

    Our main Supporters’s Organisations need to get together & issue a joint Statement stating we have been discriminated against for years, today’s decision is further blatant discrimination, we will no longer be treated as second class citizens & we intend to respond and if there is further discrimination we will intensify our response..

    If you are going to organise a protest, you have got to be certain it is effective.

    The obvious one is to pick an away game & Boycott it. This would need to be done in tandem with the Club, as the Club would need to refuse an away allocation of tickets for the chosen game,

    There is no need to rush into a half baked panicky protest, let them know that something is coming & think it out properly.

  23. I think the Statement is quite strong.

    1) It accuses the governing body of discrimination (illegal?);

    2) It says same body is irrational;

    3)It say we are not being treated equally.That is a serious accusation;

    4)Of all the bodies with a vested interest in who should play where,ONLY the SPFL wanted this outcome ;

    5) The SPFL could not give a valid reason for their decision. Because they didn`t have one?

    6) Celtic accuse them of being unnecessarily ( There were other options)unfair against ONE Club and its supporters.

    That seems , as I said, quite strong to me.
