Lessons for Celtic defence, great auction for Foundation

381

It was a hard shift for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night. Germany are on a different level, possibly from all other teams, at the moment, but Gordon’s been through similar tests as Celtic manager. What I liked about the display was that German were afforded few genuine chances, while the goals they scored, a deflection and two which hit the post before crossing the line, gave David Marshall no chance.

Scotland failed to collect a point as they found it impossible to concentrate at the level required for the entire 90 minutes. We’ve seen Celtic teams do this successfully in the past – and not just against Barcelona. We took Milan to a 0-0 after 90 minutes in the San Siro, while teams from Manchester and Munich, and lesser locations, chased the oxygen out of Celtic players’ lungs but could not find the space required to turn Celtic over.

During the previous two seasons Celtic recorded impressive domestic defensive records, but this was not due to imperious levels of concentration, we were simply better than the opposition by a sufficient margin. When that wasn’t the case, in Europe, we often didn’t display the levels of concentration which was on show, even from Scotland last night.

Great players can score wonder goals against you at any point, but don’t dive into tackles, watch what’s going on off the ball, make the right choices on how to press the ball, and even the greats will struggle to make an opening.

The biggest challenge we have ahead of the Europa League campaign is incorporating this season’s defensive arrivals into a coherent defensive strategy. It’s a concern that Craig Gordon looks like a better goalkeeper playing for Celtic in Europe than David Marshall did playing for Scotland against Germany. Marshall is a good enough keeper, but his defence didn’t expose him too often. Craig is called upon too often in Europe.

    Or 11d plus a farthing…………………………

  2. Canamalar – I’m going to make two points one that supports you, one that doesn’t.

    1. Streamers and porn suppliers have historically been at the forefront of delivering video across the web. I suspect that at least some of the differences are due to the streamers media player being less ‘off the shelf’. Also my experience of the streamers is that they delay the signal more in order to deliver a smoother performance but who cares? It’s not like I’m listening to other commentary so I’m unaware that I’m behind. So all things being equal there’s still a chance you’d get a better service via stream.

    2. There’s actually quite a big difference between serving a live broadcast and a prerecorded one. The live one needs encoded on the hop which is pretty intensive processor wise. The prerecorded one is already done so just needs delivered. Its always going to be easier to send prerecorded HD with no buffering.

As a side note Celtic should really consult with the likes of Now TV and Netflix. I have a maximum 8mb connection here and very rarely get issues with either. Including live TV. BT sport can be appalling though.

  3. Ah the old Flintstone celtic tv bandwith question.

Where can you watch it in the middle east ?

Not I Saudi as they don’t have fast enough servers

    But abu dhabi do

  4. Nice goal from England. Great play by Luke Shaw. Get to the bye line and cut it back to the 18 yard line. Simple. Come on celtic start doing it.. The defence is facing the wrong way when that happens.

  5. Jude,

his team won and he kept a clean sheet.

I didn’t see it so I don’t know much more than that neebs

  6. Any South Korean residents on here? What kind of service do they get? SK has the most advanced domestic network in the world.

  7. As I said its simple, some are served from better spec servers probably fibre optic servers which in many cases are only decoded at the house router light speed right up to the house..

Some servers will be coaxial/copper changed to fibre, transmitted as light, changed back to copper and decoded by the router.

Fibre optic will always be faster and better quality then copper.

Now the trick is finding out how to get on the list for fibre optic servers. As I said people who have been subscribing for years may automatically get put on these as a loyalty thing but the real paranoid thing is IP addresses/membership numbers are allocated which server they are getting so don’t go upsetting the tech staff or you’ll get buffered.

  8. So embarrassing moment on the flight home.

Rooney breaks the English international team record for goals scored …..FANTASTIC, Wayne …well done …!!!!!!!!

  10. Marc Janko, the big experienced striker, who tried to tout himself to Celtic last summer, just scored the 3rd for a very good Austria team, away to Sweden .0-3.Looked fit, sharp, linked up well, held ball up well and rag dolled Swedish defence all night.

  11. Can I just say in the passing that (although my translation skills might not be what they used to be) I have a sneaky feeling that the Callan-Symanzik equation may not be all it’s cracked up to be …

  12. Canamalar – I’d be amazed if a) Celtic are using a data centre that has servers connected to the outside world with copper or b) running their own servers.

I’m prepared to be amazed but I just think its unlikely.

  13. Weeminger,

Encoded on the hop or precoded it’s still the same amount of data being transmitted, what happens before it’s transmitted make no difference high or low processor requirements it’s immaterial, it’s all done before transmission, there may be delay in the time to transmit and you can see that when other providers broadcast games, CTV is usually lagging other broadcasters, the number of times I’ve read on here about a goal then waited to see the goal happen ten seconds later on CTV. So there’s yer porn channel delayed for smoother delivery, are the Plc using a porn channel for broadcast :)

  15. NegAnon2 on 8th September 2015 8:58 pm –

I like to know and understand what I’m talking about before giving an opinion. I like to add value to a discussion and in researching I often find that the reasons for something being so are not what they seem to be. Equally I find that views based on another’s experience widen my understanding.

Now the CTV is a good example. I use it from home on audio and away when overseas.

I noticed that when I log in from UK the pricing information is only relevant to the UK.

When I log in from overseas I get the overseas pricing but not UK.

That is because the entry screen identifies my location and gives me one page or another depending on it.

However folk who only log in as one or the other do not have the full picture of what is on offer to whom and what you get for it.

Now that does not ordinarily matter that much but when you have both subscribers on blogs asking what prices are or what you get for your money the responses, depending on what the respondent thinks to be true, differ.

A reply from a UK blogger will differ from an overseas blogger three hours later but the answer from both whilst true is not fully accurate. So I thought I’d try and get a more accurate picture out there to avoid misunderstandings. So I went to talk to the folk who can answer the questions. Everyday folk doing an honest days work.

Having said that I don’t believe its all down to systems and that folk don’t make deliberate mistakes in what they say in order to mislead.

In fact it is in knowing a bit more than they do that you can tell if they have the full picture and if they (and I’m not talking CTV here) for example should know the rules but don’t mention them you know what they are not saying and start to wonder why..

I adopted this approach about 15 years ago after reading this story in an Article in a John Powell SJ book. I commend it to you.

    Article Four

Most of us are tempted to generalise our personal experience. We forget

that others are really “other”, different from us. We often make the false

presumption that everyone reacts exactly as we do. This temptation to

generalise is an indication that I have discovered “otherness” only

imperfectly. I have not yet fully realised how unique and individual each

    of us is.

Because of this I am persistently tempted to project my reactions into

others. If something hurts or bothers me, I presume that it will hurt or

bother everyone. If a given situation stimulates a worried reaction in me,

I presume that anyone would worry in such a situation. Such a habit of

thinking and speaking makes me the norm of all human reality and reaction.

The discovery of “otherness” is essential to a good communicator.

No human being on the face of the earth possesses the whole truth. Each of

us has only a small part: but if we are willing to share our small parts,

our pieces of the truth, we will all possess a much fuller reality, a much

larger share of the total truth.

The picture comes to mind of two people on opposite sides of a solid fence. One side of the fence is painted brown the other side is green. If the person on the green side keeps insisting

“This fence is definitely green”, he will invite contradiction from the person

standing on the other side of the fence.

“No its not. Its clearly brown.”

Obviously each has a part of the truth, just as we all do in most of our

disagreements. It’s hard to imagine that a person could be totally wrong

about any complex issue. Everyone has some part of the truth to share.

  18. Weeminger,

I would not be surprised in the least, I’ve done due diligence for a few banks recommending data centres in the south and even the teir 4 data centres have copper telecom lines that get used, not every one wants, needs or can afford fibre optic, there are also data centres that simply provide the power, a choice of communication and space, the client can provide their own equipment if that’s what they want.

There is also a range of server specs even in the fibre optic servers there are many to choose from.

  19. Its a company called Exterity that provide the tech. Perhaps somebody could email and ask them.

Im not joking about the porn industry. It’s always been at the forefront of video compression and streaming.

  20. weeminger on 8th September 2015 9:11 pm

Cheers. As I said that is what I suspected was the explanation. Reducing the frame rate in a recording without a visible difference in the play back would reduce the data to stream, meaning less bandwith to pay for.

CTVs problems are economics and trying to persuade the business that stopping folk attending by offering a better service at a fraction of the cost of attending is not going to affect the core business model under which it and Scottish clubs operate. Gate money.

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Brogan, Joe McLay’s catchphrase, if I remember correctly, was ‘know your definitions, son’.

He taught me in first year and he handed us all a book of scientific definitions at our first physics class.

In relation to the two other physics teachers we had, Mr McLay, was the best of the them.

  22. It may also be the case that the recorded content is being placed on data centres round the world putting it closer the the receiver. That might help too.

  23. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Blantyretim, Clive Tyldsley is a comple and utter clown.

The 2002 champions league final was at Hampden with that clown doing the commentary.

A streaker ran onto the pitch and Tyldsley said what else do you expect, we are in Scotland after all.

The streaker was that scouse guy who was a serial streaker at sporting events.
