Lessons for Ronny, a shout for Hearts

385

There’s a wee lesson for Ronny Delia in not conceding ground too quickly after the final whistle. On first pass, TV pictures suggested Dedryck Boyata failed to make contact with the ball at Hamilton on Friday, it was only when Ronny saw pictures from the opposite angle, that he realised the player timed his challenge to the inch.

Unfortunately, this was after the manager’s post-match TV appearance, when he accepted the referees decision. No matter if you’ve seen an incident or not, it’s better to be circumspect than to dive in with a definitive comment immediately after a game. Whatever the outcome of Boyata’s appeal, at least referee Craig Thomson can be absolved from blame for making the same mistake as Ronny Deila.

There’s a big midweek card coming up in the Premiership. I’m hoping Hearts find form tonight against Inverness. If they win they are as close to Aberdeen (6 points, with same games played) as the Dons are to Celtic, with a better goal difference too. Aberdeen and Hearts have to play each other twice before the end of the season, my preference would be these games have a very competitive edge.

Speaking of Hearts, I was slightly uncomfortable with their statement regarding the racist abuse dished out to Kilmarnock player, Josh Magennis, “To clarify, this allegation does not involve the player’s colour, religion or sexuality”.  Is there a pecking order of bigotry I’m not aware of which deems anti-Irish abuse a lesser-offence?

Or does that only apply when she is having a go at Celtic? I’m confused now.

I guess it’s a question of interpretation, but I didn’t find the Hearts statement to be indicative of a pecking order in racism. I thought it clearly identified anti-Irish racism as both THE issue in this case and therefore AN issue in general.

  9. Mistertaximan

Why did Hearts feel the need to make that statement?

Was it good of them to differentiate between types of slur, but couldn’t you be forgiven for thinking that

being called ‘Irish’ altered the status or severity of the players complaint.

WE note the comments made today by a number of sources calling for the repeal of the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.

We have consistently opposed this legislation from the outset as it has been used to create a general presumption that different laws should apply to football supporters as distinct from society as a whole.

We reiterate our position that the Act should be repealed.

We encourage and promote positive behaviour within football at all times and welcome any attempt to do likewise.

However, this Act is unworkable, and once again we call for it to be repealed in the interests of all football supporters and football clubs.

When we reduce ourselves to concern about Aberdeen and Hearts you know we have problems. The idea that we try and big them up to justify our own failings is not on. We should be miles ahead of them.

    Fan ‘racially abused’ Celtic star

    Craig Bellamy

Craig Bellamy is a Welsh international player

A football fan has been convicted of racially abusing former Celtic player Craig Bellamy.

Kevin Bonar, from Edinburgh, shouted insults at the Welsh player as he watched Hearts play Celtic in April.

Bonar’s lawyer argued his actions were not an offence and that the care worker should be cleared.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Sheriff John Baird convicted Bonar, 29, of racially aggravated breach of the peace and fined him £250.

The sheriff called it “flagrant behaviour”.

Bonar had been part of the travelling support at the Parkhead match on 2 April, which Hearts won 2-0.

There is no doubt being Welsh is part of a racial group

    Sheriff Baird

Midway through the game, Celtic were awarded a corner and Wales international Bellamy, now with Blackburn Rovers, raced across to take it.

Pc Duncan McLeod, who was patrolling near the visiting fans, told the court that he spotted Bonar, who was out of his seat and yelling.

The police officer told the court he believed he had made “a racist comment”.

Bonar’s defence lawyer, Iain McSporran, asked Pc McLeod what he would have done if Bellamy’s ex-team-mate and fellow striker John Hartson had been insulted over his weight or if abuse had been levelled at midfielder Neil Lennon over his red hair.

The Pc said he would have told off the person involved, but would not have arrested him or her as that was not deemed an offence.

Sheriff Baird said: “There is no doubt being Welsh is part of a racial group.

“If you commit an offence and show malice to that group then that justifies that the breach of the peace was racially aggravated.”

  20. Has Mrs Budge had the results of that report about her supporter being beaten up in Govan yet? She said she would comment on receiving it. Her comments have escaped my attention, tbh, although she was very quick off the mark to criticise us for much less serious goings on at her ain midden. Still, she’s the darling of the SNP.

    Bournesouprecipe,

“The club can confirm that following this afternoon’s game, a complaint was made to Police Scotland by a Kilmarnock player.

The Kilmarnock player alleges that an abusive comment was made relating to his nationality by an individual seated within the home end at Tynecastle. The alleged abusive remark related to the player being Irish. The player is from Northern Ireland. To clarify, this allegation does not involve the player’s colour, religion or sexuality.

Senior figures from both clubs were present when the player made the complaint and discussed the matter fully thereafter.

Heart of Midlothian FC has a number of players of different nationality playing in the current squad and is very proud of the international make up of our team. We will fully support any police investigation into reports of abuse such as the one which has been reported today.”

This statement provided clarity on an issue potentially damaging to Hearts reputation (no laughing at the back). They took the opportunity to promote their opposition to all forms of racism, and I’m prepared to take Ann Budge on her word. Any club would have issued a statement on such a matter. I cannot for the life of me find anything objectionable in this statement. Nowhere does it say it was only anti-Irish racism not real racism so no biggie. I think Paul’s interpretation is, dare I say, a trifle paranoid? It clearly identified anti-Irish racism and that is not something would have come to expect in days gone by.

  23. The SMSM and the CQN bullies still at it with the CFC manager, yup, catching up with the crowed who play at the other end of the city, despicable disgusting behaviour, and very unworthy of how a true Celtic fan should behave, no class what so ever, we all have opinions I get that, but this is way over the top in my opinion, there are actually Celtic supporters in here wanting us to get beat that’s how bad it’s getting, I am still with the manager, and the players, all the way, but I am embarrassed with the bile and accusations made about our manager, I do weary, I honestly don’t get why this behaviour continues.
