Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

A £2.4million, 24 year old Spanish Second Division journeyman with 9 clubs in his short career was our first choice?? who the hell is our 2nd and 3rd choices? God help us!

    ——-

Can’t say I was too excited about Scepovic, but he was probably 2nd choice after Jerome. It doesn’t bode well for the who the next player is on the list. Try and get a last minute loan from a premiership club, and start the striker search again.

    Paul,

Any idea why the window is open today but was closed on Monday 2nd Sept last year?

    Good thinking…

Still leaves a hole in defence tho but if he’s going we may as well get something out of it.

David Villa is signed to NYC FC. He is currently on loan to Melbourne FC.

I think this is a wind up.

TimJim. Its nice to dream at times but Hoopers time at Celtic has passed as we could not or we would not pay him the money he gets in the EPL. So I would not spend time thinking about that scenario. H.H.

    _____________________________________________________________________

I can assure you I am to long in the tooth to day dream. I was merely pointing out, although he is not setting the EPL on fire, do you think he would still do a job for us. I know its not going to happen.

  6. ah well another waste of time at Celtic on deadline, more players rejecting moves incoming and worse still more rejects staying at Celtic. Am sorry the old mantra from the board “there is no money” doesn’t wash anymore. All the previous club investment has cleared debt meaning we are now sitting with millions in the bank from Forster and other player sales this season (not including what we get for Van Dijk)

  7. Not sure if anyone missed it on the last article.

Bournemouth are after Jonny Russell. Surely we can compete with them!

Won’t be the first time I have had plenty room to stretch my legs at Celtic park whilst my good friends faithful, through and through are otherwise engaged.

The Amazing Journey would not be so amazing if it were all a straight line.

Still, we have had a big downturn over the last 18 months so it is time to see us head in the right direction again. Let’s see what Ronny can build. If we are seeing the type of football we want and consistency by the spring, i.e. after the next transfer window, we will really know where we are going.

If we stutter from 5-0 wins one week to defeat the next, we will also know where we must go.

  9. SSN:

Rennes defender Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik has been connected with a move to West Ham this summer but reports in Spain suggest that Real Betis and Celtic are now fighting it out for his signature.

It is understood that he has doubts about joining Betis because they are playing in Spain’s Segunda Division, although Celtic are believed to be offering less money.

    Hahahahahahaha …… Good retort….!!

  11. Faith, Ford Fiestas and Falling asleep.

We need a striker! Wee need a striker!

We need a striker to win the SPFL!

    How depressing is that?

I already saw the Robbie Keane movie, this is a re-make of an old classic.

I have travelled this road a thousand times (ok mibbe not a thousand),but it leads to the same place.

    Faithfull through and through………………………in what?

To have faith in Celtic is to have belief that we are going to be Champions of Europe once again, even if it’s out-with our grasp this year, we can build, right?

The road we travel to get there has all the ups and downs, trials and tribulations that make the journey one big magical adventure. It can take decades but it can be done

Once you realise that the road to European Glory actually disny exist anymore, it’s a ring road on the outskirts We are in the slow lane with the not enough cash for the toll booth on the exit ramps.

Untill you reduce the toll and make the road accessible again you are going nowhere fast (I mean slow…it’s the slow lane remember)

We go to see Celtic not with faith but through habit nowadays. It is getting monotonous.

Celtic is already the wrong type of community club. We are a community who go to express ourslelves as such. (we even struggle with identity these days)

Now reality dawns that this cycle of domestic domination and European wall-flowers is as good as it gets.

Not only that, even this set up is too fragile to be guaranteed.

If we break down again next year, we need to pay to fix the car before we even get back back on the slow lane with the inaccessible toll roads.

So why do we keep going?

    Habit

There used to be full houses every week, The Champions League nights were magical, everyone wanted in, we BELIEVED. (oh, I just had an irony attack there!)

The gaps are appearing in the stands, the big banner now covers a large section of seats.

People don’t believe. People have lost faith.

They haven’t gone away, they just pick n choose when to go. When to rekindle there sense of belonging. Keeping their hand in until their faith returns. It is not desertion, it is consumerism without blind faith. Faith has been manufactured out of football, just like the toll roads, you can’t have faith in getting off the ring-road when you know for certain you don’t have the wherewithal.

So we are slowly going to sleep, like the passenger in the slow lane, canny keep those eyelids open…..nodding their head forward every so often till it jolts up again.

If we but a striker today we will all jolt to attention for a few seconds but soon some more of those eyelids will feel heavy again for a lot of people,

You can’t fight the monotony of the slow lane.

  12. lionroars67

    I don;t see why it couldn;t happen.

We have been known to splash on a decent loan when the chips are down.

  15. I reckon PL has a saving target of. 50-100m. He just wants that as a reserve. Almost for the sake of having it.

It’s the only explanation for continually punting played for. £m’s and not reinvesting.

I would say we can’t. Or rather won’t.

We could have signed Russell last summer for £700k but as PL said ‘our people’ don’t rate any Scottish players as being good enough. They rated Pukki, Boerrigter & Balde good enough, but not Russell.

  21. Admire your sense of calm, Paul.

Surely, Lawell with his accountancy/risk management background knew from Scepovic’s comments after our Maribor defeat (re PSV) that the guy was not totally committed? Plan B should be well developed and ready to go.

I’d take Armstrong and Pawlett any day………especially today with thoughts of yesterday still burning my head and heart.

Timjim. I point out that in the majority of cases where a player has returned to a club for the second time it rarely works. I think Hoopers level is the SPL but I would prefer to go with Griffiths while we try to find a striker who is at least 6ft 2 ins and with good mobility. H.H.
