Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

If we dont get Peter Pawlett, Peter Lawwell better take a good look in the mirror man.

  3. For all that our strikers (and attacking midfielders) have been accused of being divers over the years, at least if we signed Pawlett there would be no more debate :-)

Look at Tommy Burns Celtic teams. Couldn’t defend to save themselves but had us entertained all day long.

Lets put more of our resources into signing players from middle to front and watch the missing fans come flocking back.

    Make it an entertainment again.

Football is not rocket science and we have been over complicating it for a long time now.

Thanks for your considered postings over the weekend about our clubs youth system/scouting system.

I would debate that this is one of the main areas that our club should focus on.i would like to see the path taken by Callum McGregor talen a lot more by the club, as there is no substitute for one of our own coming thro the ranks and into the first team.i have read TheBatteredBunnets analysis where it is easier to become a surgeon than come thro the youth set up and play for our first team.i feel it is time at Lennoxtown to recalibrate our coaching staff so our club are turning out ‘surgeons’-players able enough to get into our first team,.

I know its difficult and the dynamic we are dealing with (youth)is a volatile one due to modern day peessures (money/lifestyle etc) but all these can be overcome.

What exchanges take place between our club coaches and other clubs in Europe for purposes of training and skills updating?

We have to become more dynamic, winning the youth league and cup doubles are great but success has to be marked by the Calum mc gregor audit path of getting into 1st team and not be part of what is to me the disheartening annual cull of 9 or 10 players.

It would be good if we followed the surgeon path for another reason atop the ‘one of our ain’coming thro and that is I think it is more akin to the club ethos instead of going out and buyin this one and that one, and the financial hit if that signing fails.

It would be nice to increase our rate of success over 1, 2 and 5 year plans, I would rather the money go there instead of a lot of our recent purxhases/loans

I talk to a lot of supporters off-line, most of them are very well educated professionals, not of the knee-jerk genre. I admire their honesty, in private, they don’t want to harm Celtic’s reputation further by publishing their concerns and I couldn’t post their words anyway due to the profanity rules on here, but rest assured Auldheid, people can bury their heads in the sands all they want whilst others walk away from ridicule.

I’ve lost count of the number of people this morning who have asked me – what the hell is going on at Celtic? To say they are bemused is to be kind.

On the night Blair’s first Labour government voted for cuts to single parent benefits, Gordon Brown stood in the lobby of the Commons and lambasted every Labour MP who walked into the No gallery. As he did so, Peter Lilley stood gleefully waving Labour members into the Yes area with the cry “This way for the cuts!”

When the vote was announced and the cuts went through, Brown turned to his most senior advisor and, pointing at a gathered group of rebels, told him they would be made to pay a high price for their vote. (They didn’t as it happens, none of them.)

His advisor shook his head sadly and told Brown, “It’s not them you should be worried about … it’s them,” he said pointing to the rows and rows of Labour MP’s who had swallowed all their principles and pride, who were sitting with ashen faces and furious expressions.

I don’t know whether this forum is representative of the wider support or not, but although I don’t attend games I know dozens who do … and whilst not the sort of people to shout their displeasure from the rooftops, as you’ve said, they are quietly (and not so quietly) fuming.

  20. We play with a handicap as a club and a business because the environment we find ourselves in. That makes things more difficult, but do we let that fact become an excuse or do we do things better, try harder, be more effective in our dealings?

Scepovic pulling out the deal shows he’s a mercenary, but at least he’s honest about it. There are plenty of others who come, say the right thing then tout themselves to a EPL club at the first opportunity. We do not deserve the loyalty of any player more than any other club, that loyalty may be earned over time, but not when or before a player arrives.

Do we want a player who isn’t here to stay? I don’t know. But I suspect if we sent ever player who thought like that packing we’d struggle for a first 11.

What we can do is make them feel important. How many times do you hear a player say “I could have went to X, Y or Z but I came here and it felt right. The manager spoke to me and I knew it was the right decision.”

We seem to be failing in that regard right now. Having players do a medical in Paris, having the manager not speak with them before they sign, it all gives out a really bad message.

Players want to be loved, they want to be made to feel like they are important.

Do you think I’d Deila had went out to meet Scepovic, had said “listen son, we know you’re a talent, we want you to lead our line, we think we can do great things with you in the team, you could have you’re name in lights.” do you think he would still have pulled out? I don’t.

We stag Moonbeams with his private jet but you know what, as a player I’m sure that helps you decide between moving or staying.

We need to start realising we do have to sell ourselves, our league but also the opportunity to become a legend, to go down in history. And if the player becomes a success and wants to move on the fair play, we’ll make a ton of money.

  21. The collapse in Celtic’s level of performance over the past 18 months has been humiliating. Dundee could have beaten us by 3 or 4 had they shown a little more composure in front of goal. The rout of Dundee Utd was an exception in a series of mediocre to shocking displays. I cannot fathom how we have not signed a striker, irrespective of what our overall “strategy” is.

I am, however, more worried about PL’s comments regarding the absence of der hun and its effect on our revenues. He is now a major player inside the SFA and the SPFL. Both of these bodies have given themselves discretion to make decisions “as they see fit” in the event of a club becoming insolvent.

There can now be no doubt that if some kind of dodgy deal is cobbled together to ensure the survival of a team in blue playing out of Ipox, then our board will be fully complicit. I’m sorry, but if that is the case, I will never attend another professional football match.

  22. Jerry McGuire is it??

I think Tom Cruise is the worst actor ever to become a Hollywood Superstar. He is a set of white teeth and a boyish smile on a 5ft 6 body.

On the set of Top Gun, a film that was gayer than Brokeback Mountain, he had to play Volleyball over a Badminton net to make him look taller.

On the set of A Few Good Men, there is a memorable scene, where Jack Nicholson gives his “You can’t handle the truth” scene. It would have been much cheaper and more dramatically convincing if a chair had played the part of Lt. Kaffee rather than Cruise. He was wooden, incapable of nuance, emotional depth, and basic competence. At least you could comfortably sit on a chair.

His Irish accent in Far and Away was convincingly Swedish.

In real life, Cruise is delusional, believing that he would be more use in saving your life, as a Scientologist, than a Doctor would be.

Jerry McGuire is the one and only film where I was convinced by Tom Cruise’s acting. He is expected to play an emotionally restricted, self-centred, money-oriented character and he did so with aplomb. I suspect, however that, once again, acting was not involved.

Tom Cruise probably thinks he could play centre forward for Celtic (I had strong suspicions that he was still using his hair style from Magnolia but had dyed it blonde in order to play the part of Jo-Inge Berget) but then he thinks he merits an Academy Award too. The Oscar judges have been careful not to demean their profession by giving him one. I hope Celtic are not going to indulge the short-arsed, delusional multi-millionaire either.

There is only so much downsizing we can cope with.

……Now Scarlet Johansen!! There is an Actor with a bit of height who could look the part.

Emmm, lets see 6 mill + SF for VVD let’s add the 10 for Big FF = 16 mil in total plus a decent forward (who we should have signed a long time ago). Now how much would SF wages cost over 3 seasons. Considerably less that than 16 mill i would hazard. Also if one adds up the wages of the likes of Pukki, Amido and lots and lots of other wasted resources i am sure that Fletchers wages would seem very reasonable. But what do i know i am not in charge of one of the best run clubs in Europe.
