Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

It’s not even that mate, there’s an even bigger worry here.

Celtic is in my DNA. My whole family has a genetic predisposition towards the club and the culture and I’ve grown up with it in my life.

We’re already in danger of losing the next generation of fans to the EPL. How the Hell are we going to convince THEM that this thing of ours is special and means something if even the people inside the club see it as little more than a business?

Hope has to be kept alive. Something has to reignite that passion.

If we dont get Peter Pawlett, Peter Lawwell better take a good look in the mirror man.

Agree we need to do something or I Can’t Explain if My generation will decide if The Kids are Alright. Maybe Peter will have to Run, Run, Run in Disguises by Christmas or Wer’e Not Gonna Take It as we Won’t get Fooled Again. The Real Me may think Why Did I Fall for That and decide at 5.15 that we’ve Had Enough but turning to Red, Blue and Grey would be Much Too Much.

Bit harsh re Forrest, there has been many players with a history of injury after injury, imagine if their clubs binned them off because of it rather than stick by them, Robin Van Persie had years of inconsistencies with injury but Arsenal stuck by him, there are many other examples not just in football, Novak Djokovic for example. Forrest is a great talent, he needs to be stuck by and he will come good, persistent injuries like that can be down to something as simple as a diet change and it takes time to get through these things.

Hearimg that the upper tier stands will be closed for the europa group games!!wtf!!?

    ————————————————————————————————————-

The way things are going right now, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have to open the lower tiers. Keep your green pounds in your pocket. It the only language the plc huns know.

  6. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have to open the lower tiers. = I would be surprised if they have to open the lower tiers. Oops.

  7. Chances of us signing a quality striker by tonight are close to zero in my honest opinion.

I will be happy to be proved wrong!

  8. Is it worth taking a baw doon to Parkheid, standing outside Lawwell’s office, playing keepy uppy shouting ‘what aboot this, what aboot this, eh Pedro!’

  9. The day that the Guardian is so concerned about Celtic’s sliding status in the game should make everyone sit up and notice. Saturdays article made the point that we are becoming increasingly irrelevant. It pointed to NL being overlooked for a number of EPL positions as evidence of this.

whether or not that is correct, it is evident we need to claw our way back to becoming a dominant team capable of giving richer clubs a run for their money in Europe. Well coached, many of the current team are capable of that. Unfortunately the shambles off the park is equalled by the current coaching team. Thus far, Deila and Collins have played to the players and teams weaknesses not strength. Maybe there were not so many takers for the job. However i dp not see RD lasting this journey.

i said last week that the league was by no means a certainty despite the usual predictions. All of our matches thus far is evidence of that

  10. I don’t “spend money on the club” I pay to get into the ground to see my team play football. Always will.

I spent money on the club to buy shares…which i did or buy merchandise which I did when kids were small, I don’t now.

    Important difference!

Re Forrest heard pundit the other day say something about his ‘running style’ could be a cause. I know he can be inconsistent but that comes with youth. he is a class player on his day and do we need some just now.

Look at all the anguish we are seeing about a little known Serbian journeyman playing for a 2nd tier Spanish mob. Dodged a bullet there in my view as he would have been just another Balde/Pukki.

We need to push the boat out and pay that couple of million more and the wages to get someone decent. After all if they are any good they will only stay for a couple of seasons and we can move them on and recoup our costs.

Personally I don’t think we really wanted to sign anyone and went for Scepivic (or whatever this unknown never to be heard of again 3rd rate striker is called) with an offer that he was bound to refuse.

John Alberto Fernando Andres Luigi Olof Guidetti belongs to an exclusive group of strikers who have more letters in their name than they have goals in professional football.

Good luck to Dylan McGeough at Hibs. I hope you help to turn their fortunes around.

I think this is a fine opportunity to show scouts that you can build a solid career in professional football at a good level. Forget about Coventry.
