Lessons from the past

121

If you watch football long enough, you learn lessons, or at least, you should.  A big lesson for me was the 2008 run-in.  After Celtic lost at home to 10-man Motherwell on 5 April, Gordon Strachan’s team were on their knees, miles behind Rangers with seven games to play. Against expectations, Celtic would win all seven, including two against Rangers, and two revenge victories at Fir Park.

During these games, Celtic did not inspire.  They were behind after an hour on their last trip to Motherwell.  Rangers thought they had the point they needed after 93 minutes in one game, then had the lead on their next visit to Celtic Park, but Celtic conceded nothing.  Even that glorious night at Tannadice was tight and could have gone either way (United had a chance just before the break).  The match reports from that run-in were not reassuring, and they were up against a good Rangers team too.

There is a clear route for Celtic to win this league.  We concede nothing, continue to give the manager and players time, and concentrate on winning the next game.  I’m here for it.

  3. I find myself feeling strangely more optimistic about our prospects than many on here. Perhaps it’s a fatalistic trait kicking in, but one game at a time, in our own hands and all that.

As for the host’s lead in….

    Lessons from the past….

If you watch football long enough, you learn lessons, or at least, you should.

Let’s not forget the “failing to study history dooms you to repeating the same mistakes”.

I’m not sure that there is an exact comparison between where we find ourselves now and anything in our own history, but I’m sure there are other clubs from who we could have learned. Right?

No, seriously, there must be, right?

Is there another club who took a position of such domination, football wise, financially, structurally, and then shit the bed so badly?

Truth is that 13 out of 14 and 27 of 42 was an impressive haul.

The return of Celtic’s second most successful manager in the club’s history built on the unexpected excitement of the Angeball era.

Running Bayern Munich to the last seconds of a CL knockout tie on their own patch.

Recruiting and selling players for massive profits to the EPL, Serie A and beyond.

Record revenues and profits that would make the Grant/White dynasty blush.

An all seater 60,000 stadium filled for basically every game, and a traveling support the envy of top clubs throughout Europe.

A unique brand of ultras, that helped keep Celtic Park youthful, vibrant, colorful, relevant and still attached to cultural ideals as well as Br. Walfrid’s ethos (props to PL for his influence).

International supporters’ clubs in every corner of the globe, and a brand that was visually impactful and synonymous with a reputation which left nothing but positive impressions.

Training and player development facilities consistent with some of the best clubs in Europe.

Almost guaranteed access to the easy money of CL competition.

Sounds like a finely tuned machine, so why would you toss the keys of this particular supercar to the current board with a casual “just don’t scratch it”?

However this season finishes, we have to recognize that as of today, we stand on the brink of handing all these same advantages to our greatest rivals – a club that is a mere 14 years old.

This is a case study in the making, but it won’t be titled “Lessons from the past”, it will be more like “Keep your eye on the ball”! Other suggestions welcome.

I hope all is well with you.

I am similar to you as I think we can win the league, but I am not sure we will.

The reasons to be optimistic are :

    – I cant see us osing twice at CP to both Rangers and Hearts in the same season, nor can I see us losing twice in a row to Hibs and twice away from home at Fir Park.

On a game by game basis, the stats are in our favour, but cumulatively they are against us.

One final point, none of the top 3 have been good this season. Both Hearts and Rangers have had wee runs of form, winning 3/4 on the bounce, so maybe its our turn for a wee run of form.

  5. the long wait is over on

    Gedinte,

Agree with all of that except these statements, which apply to us but definitely not to the Mob:–

“a traveling support the envy of top clubs throughout Europe…

…International supporters’ clubs in every corner of the globe, and a brand that was visually impactful and synonymous with a reputation which left nothing but positive impressions.”

The opposite applies to them and seemingly always will unless the new owners are actually serious about rooting out their hardcore attitudes.

    Just one wee example :-

All good here and trust the same with you – good to see you posting.

Can’t disagree with any of that at all, especially as there have, IIRC, only been two / three rounds of games this season (incl last weekend ) where all 3 challengers have won.

I’m also hoping we have a degree of “muscle memory” of getting leagues over the line that the others don’t.

    All to play for!

There’s another way to look at it and I think the phrase “lurking with intent” best describes our position at the moment.

  14. There is 2 opinions among Celtic supporters.

1.We hope we can win the league and we will support them all the way

    2. We think they won’t win the league.

The problem is that the last 3 performances don’t fill us with belief. Today’s article adopts a keep the faith message. Of course we will keep hoping and supporting but reality shows we are weak.

Plainly, we don’t have good enough players or a good enough team. Hope is what we have.

  15. I’m keeping the faith because I believe we can’t play any worse than we did on Saturday yet still picked up 3 points. We will likely need to win all our games and hope our 2 closest challengers take points off each other. This is a highly possible scenario. Bring it on.

  22. At the moment, contrary to what the ” Look at how I support Celtic”types think,we are not better than the scum.14 goals in their last 3 games proves it.We have scored,2.Winning this league is NOT in our hands.

Not just us that have to win.We are dependent on someone doing us a favour.

Not doom and gloom, just realising its a bit of a long shot. They do come up.

    Sometimes.

  23. I would suggest by paying the highest season tickets in Scotland by a country mile, the fans are already playing their part.

Take Hearts for example, their cheapest adult ST is less than half price of Celtic’s.

Stop focusing on the fans doing their bit and ask what are our custodians and players doing ?

I’ll never forget 2008 – one of my favourite league wins for sure. I won’t give up on this one by any means until it’s done.

*Me neither, on both counts, how well I remember the season of 2008 especially 2 games in particular, the first was the bringing on Sammy as a sub and his pass back to the heid, whose sublime cross to skippy was headed in by Jan Vinnegar just as the huns were singing “your gonnae win eff all” and naesurname was getting all the plaudits from his bench.

I had a corner office which with a bit of rearranging allowed me to be a bit invisible at times, now I am NOT a noticeably emotional person but that afternoon my eyes welled up as I knew then we would be champions no matter what the “strachan strachan GTF” mob thought, I did the same on Tommy Burns Thursday after the same big mhan nodded the winner especially on hearing how big Zander fae Bellsmyre was winding wee bammy up.

My favourite season’s end though has to be 22 seasons earlier, we had struggled all season and by Spring we had lost 6 games and tied 10 and that was just the League as we had also lost to the hibbees in both cups, the LC on penalties and 4-3 in the SC.

And then we went on a winning run, no NOT an unbeaten one but a winning one, other than the first one a 5-0 victory at Kilbowie Park the rest were 2-1, 1-2, 0-1 and 2 at home 2-0, before heading over to fir park on a Wednesday night on the last day of April, our second last game of the season , where that night listening to my shortwave and hoping for a high scoring game my heart sunk it came through motherwell 0 Celtic 2, oh ffs I thought thats it all over, it was the jammie dodgers tae lose now.

Then on that magical Saturday this time lying under the bed with the antenna stuck in the frame for a better reception, as we all know they only needed a draw, whilst we had to win by 3 goals and pray that they somehow lost.

Then it filtered through at approx 4:10 when the commentary from Love Street came on, we were already 5 up with the wee trackie seller scoring what is now regarded as one of the greatest Celtic goals of all time, but still nil-nil up at dens park where as we knew the home side were no freens of ours.

And then it happened with around 7 minutes to go the commentator announced big roar at Love Street with Celtic supporters dancing around and holding their trannies in the air, Kidd had just scored at dens park, but wait a minute there were the same type of celebrations at the bigot dome as they thought it was the swinecastle side captain who had scored for them, not so it was Albert and not Walter who incidentally like his namesake was also a Celtic fan.

Then with 3 minutes left our hero Albert did it again, Love Street was now complete bedlam as the “dundee” supporters at the bigot dome headed out for the copeland road express lol, the whistle at dens went a few minutes before ours but we knew we had done it again, as Big Billy once said there’s something magical about or club and I can see that magic formulating again on May 16th and 23rd as we celebrate the double..

Oh and my heid was thumping that Saturday morning but no from the excitement or tension but from battering it aff the bed frame lol

As I wrote yesterday, by definition both the huns and Hertz cannot come through their next 2 games with 6 points.

    Celtic can.

Assuming they do, there is no scenario where Celtic can’t finish above the huns going in to the last 3 fixtures.

There 9 possible outcomes for Hertz over their next 2 games. Only one outcome (win/win and six points) would make it difficult for Celtic due to GD.

It depends on the narrative you want to spin, but the chance of Celtic winning the league is hardly a “long shot”.

Burnley 78: I am hopeful of Elton winning both league and cup, but hope springs eternal, it does not win games of football.

You should be selling those rose-tinted glasses of yours as a commercial venture. You’d make a fortune.

Quoting how long you’ve been supporting the Celtic is an irrelevance. It merely denotes that you are older than some or that some took you to CP at an early age.

This is the worst forward line/front three/ front two I’ve ever seen but others may have seen worse.

The incessant dogma from you re all things PL or host related shows you as a man unacceptable to what he is actually seeing every week for virtually the whole season.

How anyone can defend a board that appointed WN is beyond comprehension.

We may win the remaining games and thus the league by the board’s contribution to that is negative.

Btw, you’re only a lhad at the ‘supporting’ thing.
