Lessons learned from Friday experiment

828

After every experimental line-up (such as Friday’s), it’s tempting to ask what the manager learned from the experience.

The partnerships on the left and right wings didn’t look right.  Emilio Izaguirre didn’t overlap as often as usual and Stuart Armstrong was less effective than normal.  A lack of space impacted the James Forrest-Adam Matthews partnership on the right.  Forrest was manhandled until he switched left or got inside the box, when he was able to play unhindered.

Ineffectiveness on the wings led to the same up front.  Anthony Stokes doesn’t get to play centre forward too often and didn’t really get much of a chance on Friday.  Stokes anonymity was the most glaring aspect of the game but I suspect the responsibility lies elsewhere.

  1. Joe Miller v Diedco

My first Celtic game. TV of course. I was at a scout camp and everyone was watching the game. I was forced to pick a side and I picked Celtic (thank my lucky stars).

    Its been Celtic ever since.

    Great memories.

Love Street 86? Always remember standing in the old coo shed end and there were constant shouts of Dundee scoring. There was a guy beside us with a radio glued to his ear.At one of the “Dundee have scored” shouts,he looked at me and said “It’s only a corner.” Then suddenly he went mental. Knew Dundee had scored then.Another happy day.

one of my favourite ever games. We were brilliant and I still get angry when I hear folk say St. Mirren lay down, we were brilliant that day.

  5. !!Bada Bing!! on

The huns celebrated as the word was Kidd scored………but it was Albert Kidd not Walter……:))

The Hertz had a player called Kidd too. Caused confusion in the Love St Shed that day. One of the best games I have been at. Paisley ’86.

Jimmynotpsul, tommy and frank scored. November 1983. It was the game cooper came on for sally and they didnt even look at each other. Cooper brought down tommy, cooper moaned to the ref and tommy bounced the ball off the back of cooper’s heid.

Again I agree. I was good friends with an ex Celtic player, I still view him as a friend but have lost touch, who played with St Mirren that day. Alex Miller was the manager with St Mirren. I don’t think I need to tell anyone what the team talk was like. Incidentally Miller when St Mirren manager used to take training with a Rangers Tammy on. My friend turned up one day with a Celtic Tammy on as a wind up. Miller fined him. True story.

P.S the game I was talking about was 5/11/1983. McGarvey and Tommy scored for Celtic before Clark’s consolation.

    Dallas.

Thank you. What a memory. I had to Google it to find the details. I still can’t remember our goals. Guess I was too busy taunting them with chants of relegation and flagging my mate for paying twenty quid.

  10. The adults come and eat you out of house and home, drink all your beer and wine. Their kids leave the place as if a tornado hit it.

    Family -just love them

now for some quiet time and a few beers which i managed to hide away

  11. I know I’ve said it before but I don’t mind repeating it, roy croppie, thank you for what you bring to the blog.

Remember Mc Garvey turning inside the Celtic defence and hitting low shot which was well saved.Whole thing could have been different if that had went in.They never lay down to us we were brilliant.

Parkheadcumsalford, sorry for my late reply re mcnee & charle being cousins.

I was in heraghty’s who were having a lisbon twentieth anniversary night. One of the heraghty’s regulars was a celtic reserve in the early sixties and knew charlie.

Big billy was there but about ten minutes later mcnee came in with charlie and billy left when he saw mcnee.

The ex celtic reserve player told me charlie was mcnee’s cousin but i must have picked him up wrong. Sorry for the mix ip.

was that just after the Sporting Lisbon 5-0? I think Willie McStay played sweeper as big Roy was missing…strange what you remember.

Jimmynotpaul, i think frank hit the ball across the big girvan craphouse who could’nt get down to low shots into the corner.

Tommy worked a one two at about twenty five yards out then burst into the box then placed the ball into the right hand corner of the sticky net.

  17. Great stuff Roy.

    Loved that game in 86.

Let the people sing and a Happy Easter to all at Celtic QN.

Loving those 86 photos RC, on the way back from that game we were hanging out the sunroof of a fiat mirafiora on M8 back to Coatbridge when the boot flew open and took my day old jacket to a watery grave.. Cared not a jot.

The week after we took the opportunity to console the Hertz fans after Aberdeen pumped them in cup final by standing at Carnbroe junction on M8 with champions flags , tricolours and signs of the cross.. How they laughed :)

  19. Parkheadcumsalford;

Wel! Well! Well!. Thanks for that. Guy enjoyed the game. I always enjoyed your posts. You could tell a few a few stories of famous guys you taught in Salford.

Enjoying Ronny and the Celtic play, future looks bright.

    Take care and keep posting.

    Joe Miller goal.

I was a boy. Supporting Celtic was far from fashionable where I was. Only Irish or Glasgow families tended to support Celtic. Those rare victories were essential.

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

My abiding memory of that love street game was jim stewart collecting the ball and the celtic fans erupting and stewart looking totally bewildered.

Just after that you see choccy asking matt mcglone who was behind the bye line what the score was at dens. The highlights on scotsport caught it brilliantly.

Roy, you have my eternal gratitude for finding all those photos helping me recall memories of going to games in my teens and twenties.

The harry hood song, to the hari krishna tune, is my all time favourite celtic song. I had forgotten all about it until it was constantly sung on the train back from dover to victoria on our way back from the ekeren game.

  25. The Love St afternoon, I was playing football at Viewpark. It was hammering down and it was also about a week after the Chernobyl disaster. Our ref was worried that we would be caught in a shower of fallout and took us off the park for about 15 minutes.

Game restarted and we won, by the time we got in the cars Celtic were winning and it was 0-0 at Dens, before too long it all happened at Dens and we went to Franklyns at Bellshill for a wee party. I think Liverpool won the league that day as well with Dalglish scoring the goal?
