Lessons to learn from Pukki mistake

1527

Teemu Pukki’s permanent move to Brondby for a reported £500k is good business for a player who never came close to commanding a regular starting place at Celtic.  While we did well exiting him from Celtic Park but his arrival two years ago is worthy of review.

He came from Schalke as a 23-year-old, having been at Sevilla as a teenager and scoring slightly better than one in two in Finland.  Even his Schalke stats were decent, 8 goals in 7 starts and 30 appearances from the bench, which for a sparingly used young player is around the mark expected.  On paper, Teemu looked a good fit for us, so do we have anything to learn?

For a start, being able to score goals in the Bundesliga does not guarantee you will be able to translate this into an even better scoring rate in Scotland.  We have made similar mistakes when recruiting strikers from Spain in recent seasons.  For all our lack of financial clout, delivering in Scotland is not an easy task.

There is a whole world of potential issues around psychology, motivation and appetite, which I regularly hear cited about players from people in the game.  For the most part, I reckon these are excuses to bridge the unexplained gap between expectation and outcome.  You get the odd indulgent nutcase, but most players have an overwhelming sense of their need to maximise their commercial value by delivering on the park.  I suspect Teemu is no different.

Whatever the reason behind him not fitting at Celtic, the exercise cost us not only the £1.5m net loss on transfer fees, and wages paid, but more importantly the failure to kick on from reaching the last 16 of the Champions League in season 2012-13.

There’s a truth in the game which has stood the test of time: only people who watch a player week-in-week-out know his true value.  Schalke fans would have told us things about Teemu which we can tell others about John Guidetti.  John will pick up a club keen to exploit his untapped potential.  A year from now they will be a little wiser.

Our lesson: scouting is the only important part of recruitment, stats, references and YouTube clips don’t count.

Our friends at Magners have offered us two of the new Celtic away jerseys.  It’s another fantastic offer from Celtic’s main sponsor, my thanks to them.  In order to win, answer the following question:

Which team won this year’s Premiership Play-off final 6-1 on aggregate?  Put the answer in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at midnight TONIGHT, so get busy, these are two great prizes and there’s less than a 12 hour window to win them.

And………….. while you’re entering, you might want to kick a pound or two towards our Marys’ Meals Malawi school kitchen appeal.  Thank you.

And #2, if you enter, check your inbox for a response over the weekend.  There’s a home shirt unclaimed from a similar competition last month!

  4. I really trust Ronnie in the transfer market.Dont think he will want “Projects”to get into the CL.Neither will PL.Far too much money on offer this year.We are getting impatient, and rightly so.The new signings will need to be in soon for the pre-season training, and friendlies.

Think we are all a bit jealous of the massive signing spree going on over the city. They seem to be snapping up all the quality.Reports that the ex Hearts skipper deal is heading for the rocks, should not deter them,Alfie Mawson????????????,will be a great replacement.

    Trust in Ronnie.

I think that we are all, more or less, behind the regime at the club that RD has initiated.

He has stated his philosophy and the players and club have bought into it.

Therefore, it is safe to assume that the scouting side of things will have been examined also.

If that is the case, I don’t see the point of visiting previous year’s flaws.

    Those days have gone.

It must also be remembered that Neil Lennon and his staff were not particularly helpful to young players coming in as “prospects”, as, by his own admission, he didn’t have much time for coaching.

  7. The Sunday Mail r really enjoying their succulent lamb dinner today! Eustace is described as a Glasgow Warrior (another ‘war’ reference)!, and Anthony Haggerty (surely a dyke jumper) steals the show with this cracker- “Now Warburton is determined to make Rangers the envy of top clubs, forcing budding European coaches to visit Murray Park and learn the Light Blues way”! Fuck me, does no editor check this pish before it goes to print! Laughable stuff indeed! As is the admission that Gilligan n Baron Bouffant selected, interviewed n picked the new manager! The Chairman (owner) had no involvement in it! WTF!!!

Oh, and at the foot of Mr. Hagertys column about the Bread man is a photo of Jose Mourinho! No apparent reason for it, just a wee subliminal link suggesting that the Bread man is actually the zombies Mourinho! The knuckle draggers will love it lol!!!

If Phil’s latest is true, this is absolute dynamite. Suggesting that not only does King want out, it also suggests he never really wanted in in the first place.

Did he buy the shares to stop someone else buying them? Is he simply positioning himself to get his 20 million back?

The complete lack of investment, or plan, or seeming interest in Sevco (I notice its now reported Warburton hasn’t even met him yet) suggests this purchase had nothing to do with restoring “Rangers” to their “rightful place”, and more to do with King’s own precarious financial position.

The nature of the severance clauses in the ongoing contracts with MASH are reminiscent of the reverse premium lease arrangements that caused a bit of grief in the property sector ie short term gain for someone at the price of long term pain for someone else.

I see the daily arse wipes are suggesting that the Barcelona kit outsells the Celtic kit in Scotland. I suppose that is true if you have an agenda, are lazy and limit your research to the likes of Greaves, JD Sport and (dare I say it) Sports Direct.

  26. Interesting translated article on the Video Celts site. I think too much was read into Ronny’s diet revolution last year as I think it is a fairly common sense move that many previous managers have tried to emphasise too. However this article suggests the results have been more impressive than I would have expected. I remain sceptical about the amounts claimed but in favour of the approach:-

    “Secrets of the Celtic ‘diet’

    Written by: Joe McHugh

Kenn Hallstensen has given a detailed account of how Ronny Deila has re-shaped the Celtic squad.

At various stages over last season details would emerge of how players habits and training was being altered. Headline involving chips, ketchup and fizzy drinks emerged from time to time although they were somewhat undermined when Leigh Griffiths was filmed munching a tea-cake while sitting on the substitute bench at St Mirren.

Sports science and nutrition are key parts of every modern club with Hallstensen explaining how the body fat of the Celtic players has been reduced to ensure that the players are capable of going pelt for 90 minutes.

Comparing Stromsgodset with Celtic on his blog Hallstensen said: “Celtic Football Club turned out to be even bigger and more professional than I had thought, but at the same time I was surprised body composition to the players. Most bar on unnecessary body weight, while some also could benefit from a little more muscle mass.

“This was an important reason for the almost unreal results we’ve experienced with body composition of the players in Celtic. In total, the favorable change been more than 50 kg – in just seven months. With regard to that I started working with Celtic for some time after series startup, nothing of this change explained by ‘relaxation in football holiday’

“The history of the individual players is even more incredible. There are players, including several internationals, which has reduced the fat percentage by 3-4 percent without lose weight. This means they have built muscle mass, while fat and excess water has disappeared.

“There are players who basically can be said to have been in past it acceptable, but as with new diet has decreased 4.3 kg in body weight without losing muscle mass. This shows just how important it is to individualization also when it comes to advice about body composition. What’s good for one is not necessarily good enough for another.

“Ronny delicious game-play requires a lot of running and aggressively pressure over the pitch. Overweight players can not do this, and therefore was Ronny slightly distressed at the start of the season. Now he makes a big difference. 2.3 kg extra body weight may not hear so much, but when you try to put on a weight vest of 2-3 kilograms.

“This would naturally been a negative running straight ahead, but even worse for a footballer to be asked, stop, turn around and jump all the time. Fat and excess water is the same as a weight vest – unnecessary deadweight.”

Summing things up Hallstensen concluded: Exercise is gram, while diet is kilograms”

  27. Demographics would indicate that Celtic’s core support comes from less than 10% of the Scottish population give or take a few percent. Given that and,the fact that a lotion people buy different types of jersey for kids (me included) and some people prefer their kids to wear non celtic gear for reasons of ‘fear’ at times, it’s pretty normal for barca tops to outsell ours.

Fact remains that celtic sell a,lot of merch.
