Lessons to learn from Pukki mistake

1527

Teemu Pukki’s permanent move to Brondby for a reported £500k is good business for a player who never came close to commanding a regular starting place at Celtic.  While we did well exiting him from Celtic Park but his arrival two years ago is worthy of review.

He came from Schalke as a 23-year-old, having been at Sevilla as a teenager and scoring slightly better than one in two in Finland.  Even his Schalke stats were decent, 8 goals in 7 starts and 30 appearances from the bench, which for a sparingly used young player is around the mark expected.  On paper, Teemu looked a good fit for us, so do we have anything to learn?

For a start, being able to score goals in the Bundesliga does not guarantee you will be able to translate this into an even better scoring rate in Scotland.  We have made similar mistakes when recruiting strikers from Spain in recent seasons.  For all our lack of financial clout, delivering in Scotland is not an easy task.

There is a whole world of potential issues around psychology, motivation and appetite, which I regularly hear cited about players from people in the game.  For the most part, I reckon these are excuses to bridge the unexplained gap between expectation and outcome.  You get the odd indulgent nutcase, but most players have an overwhelming sense of their need to maximise their commercial value by delivering on the park.  I suspect Teemu is no different.

Whatever the reason behind him not fitting at Celtic, the exercise cost us not only the £1.5m net loss on transfer fees, and wages paid, but more importantly the failure to kick on from reaching the last 16 of the Champions League in season 2012-13.

There’s a truth in the game which has stood the test of time: only people who watch a player week-in-week-out know his true value.  Schalke fans would have told us things about Teemu which we can tell others about John Guidetti.  John will pick up a club keen to exploit his untapped potential.  A year from now they will be a little wiser.

Our lesson: scouting is the only important part of recruitment, stats, references and YouTube clips don’t count.

Our friends at Magners have offered us two of the new Celtic away jerseys.  It’s another fantastic offer from Celtic’s main sponsor, my thanks to them.  In order to win, answer the following question:

Which team won this year’s Premiership Play-off final 6-1 on aggregate?  Put the answer in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at midnight TONIGHT, so get busy, these are two great prizes and there’s less than a 12 hour window to win them.

And………….. while you’re entering, you might want to kick a pound or two towards our Marys’ Meals Malawi school kitchen appeal.  Thank you.

And #2, if you enter, check your inbox for a response over the weekend.  There’s a home shirt unclaimed from a similar competition last month!

    Royal Dornoch?

Are you some kinda madman or sadist or summat?

You need to take a putter off the tee at that most beautiful and challenging of links courses, with its high gorse banks on one side and eff all on the other.

The above is a handy hint for anyone daft enough to try playing there. Don’t allow your four over per hole ruin your appreciation of a magnificent course.

Firstly, last night I fell asleep, long day at work, secondly I’ve just finished one shift so not had time to reply,so here is my answer to you about reading bibles.

Your first reply to me last night was exactly the point I was making, you see,my point is that I don’t need to read histories of any religion,I personally was brought up in the catholic faith,I don’t need to read critical analysis, the history or indeed the bible from start to finish and try to interpret everything said, being educated at school and in church was enough for me and the point I’m making is,it would fit some better, regardless of how critical or not if they just went into a Catholic church for mass and sat beside other people from their community, shook hands with them, offered them peace,Sat in that timeless environment taking an hour out of their week, listened to some of the stories and the well intentioned messages they give (that’s if you’ve not nodded off) and ultimately left church with that wee feel good factor that you get from it which does no one any harm.

That’s my point,if I’ve got the sociological term correct,a micro view of the catholic faith and experience,as it happens I only got half way through your post earlier about wanting an answer about reading the entire bible, know what mate? I’ll leave that to you and your interpretation of it all,me? I’m happy with my experiences being brought up in the faith,I’m not perfect, far from it but then again so is everybody and everything else in life.

    Peace be with you.

  7. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

Celtic were 1/33 to win the title. We sold Pukki, Celtic are 1/25. Hmmmm….

    Anyway, my main point.

I have glanced at the back page of the DR in the supermarket a couple of times this week. As far as I could tell from such a cursory glance, the rag was saying that a player pretended to be injured so that Birmingham wouldn`t buy him and he could join Sevco.

Today, they were saying that this player would just be the first in a long line of stars who will be joining the Ibrox club.

Now, neither of these `articles` particularly surprised me (well, maybe the first one a little bit) but what does astound me is that Sevco fans actually believe this `paper is anti their club. Do they really believe that?

    JJ

  8. Davie weir or sir David of weir ( WTF is that all about ) has sent out a begging email to the Orcs pleading with them to buy ST, he states he supported sevco for the whole 3 year they’ve been around.

They must be struggling to punt them looks like the marquee signing hasn’t helped :-) HH

Out of the 10 home fixtures scheduled for 2015 i can make 8 of them!

Even though the kick off times and days will probably get changed, they will almost certainly remain on those same weekends and considering i work every 2nd weekend……those dates have fell nicely for me at least.

    Wooooohoooooo!!!!

  12. See Sevco have St Mirren , QOS, Alloa and Hibs for their first 4 games in August

New manager , new team , nil point after 4 games. Could life be that wonderful.

Last year the winners of the first division kicked off their championship campaign against the team relegated from the premiership.

This year, the relegated premiership side travel to the home of the beaten play off finalists.

Bottom line : sevco start with home tie each season.

As for the gap between expectation and outcome and yon “odd” indulgent nutcases…it seems that the current coaching staff have a better radar for one and less need to rely on using the other.

Not sure about the player by gent have one cracking stadium! I drive past it en route to Germany at night and day it’s awesome!

  24. MIT – I can help with Golf stuff for Danny. Dornoch is my absolute favourite links course, great shout for Boat of Garten too; especially when the steam engine train goes past:)

ACGR is the top man for golf, as are many others on this magical site. If BMCWP is as formidable with the clubs as he is with the pints, then that will be something special.

I’ll be home next week and hope to pop into the BV to see if any CQNrs are around. Playing Dundonald and Cathkin Braes initially; maybe if Jobo is around he’s like a game?
