Let’s have a change

375

Since Martin O’Neill arrived 15 years ago, the number of games Celtic have played with truly no pressure on is less than 30 (or about the same number we played the season before he arrived).  There’s almost always an angle when Celtic take the field, even after the league is won, whether there’s a cup final to prepare for, or a close rival to take on (as last week), or a trophy to collect (as next week).

But not tonight.  Tonight Celtic can take the field with a broader agenda than simply winning the game, we can experiment.  Hopefully we’ll not see players the manager doesn’t want, and there’s little point filling the team full of mainstays of the side.  Tonight is a chance of Darnell to continue his rehab, for Lukasz to give Gordon the night off, for (deep breath) Stefan Scepovic to lead the line!

Big Jason has had a fantastic season, but unless there’s enormous changes in Manchester, he’ll wave goodbye next week, so give Eoghan O’Connell a start.  It’s also an occasion when Ronny might want a look at Tom Rogic.  In fact, I want a look at Tom Rogic.

A change at goalkeeper, right back, central defence, centre mid and striker would give all areas of the team a fresh feel.  Let’s have it.

You boys, and girls, be kind to yourselves and if you can’t keep your soul… then don’t let it go cheap.

Ah! feck it I forget what I was going to say.

Like when others forget the meaning of morals and ethics and rather than preach… practice.

Not a betting man myself but I’m going to shove a few dollars on the Fransicians to hump the Marists 600 to Nil.

Perhaps if we played the celtic way(2 up front) Scepovic may have got more chances, a striker lives on confidence not playing erodes this, just look at guidetti,s form, new manager required

  5. Agent Green –

If Ladbrokes were only sponsoring the SPFL on condition that Rangers get through the play-offs, I am sure they would have held off until it was definite, ie Rangers win promotion.

    Or are you really suggesting that Ladbrokes . . . er . . . took a risk with 4m?

    Meanwhile back on planet Earth.

  6. Burgas Hoops on

Stefan Scepovic it’s a hard one to get your head round, i thought when we went for him he’d be a decent signing, then when he kinda changed his mind on us i thought the warning signs were there and his heart was not really in moving to the SPFL.

He’s a proven goalscorer of that there is no doubt, maybe it’s the rough and tumble industrial football in scoddland that has not impressed him, maybe it’s the game we play doesn’t suit his poaching quality’s.

Every time i’ve watched him in the Hoops we dont seem to deliver enough balls through to him that he can make the most of.

    It’s a strange one indeed.

Give him 90 min’s tonight and let’s see if he offers anything more than he’s shown, but give him some decent balls to chase, or maybe even some decent crosses as he’s no bad at the headers also.

Good article, I think from what I read earlier on RD will also rest Biton and Johansen, Mulgrew to make a comeback?

Stefan Scepovic looks like he was just introduced to the team before the game started – every game he appears in he is like that.

He looks disconnected from the rest of the team – footballwise, humourwise, socialwise (copyright C. Nicholas)

He needed a goal or ten earlier this season so that he could have felt part of Ronny’s revolution, but his ship has sailed this season.

I don’t know if he is going to weigh anchor and chart a new course back to the mainland, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Sounds like you have more info on Tom Rogic than us – he’s hardly been seen by Celtic fans.

Many thought that Stefan Johansen was ill suited for Celtic, not good enough, too small, too lightweight, just a Ronny favourite etc..

I have seen some talent in the little of Rogic’s play that he has given Celtic…

Talent and footballer’s potential are curiously fragile flowers: I spoke to an older pro a few years ago who said that when he played in schools/youth football, Archie Gemmill was a very run of the mill player, but he was very, very fit. In his early days at St Mirren he was very injury prone too.

Big Jock believed in a blend of runners, tacklers and players and for me a successful team is still a careful blend. I think that Ronny’s blend could make good use of a non injury prone Tom Rogic, journeyman or not.

As to what have we become..then I guess the answer is we have become something, that in our youth, we never expected a Celtic team to be…

A team containing very few Scots and even fewer natural inclined Celts.

Still Celtic. Still my Celtic. The players and managers who have come to Celtic and left as some of the biggest Celts is one of the nicest things that I have witnessed.

I don’t think they will fly through the play offs, but I agree with many that they will get though, honest mistakes will see to it, see last week just before one of their goals.

Couple that with Hibs doing a Hibs, they only need to have one bad game and their chance is gone, if it’s Killie, the hun will progress, Mwell, 50/50 then the MIBS kick in, I pray I am wrong, but we will see.

  22. RWE:

He is a 5 a side player, a good one, but on the big pitch he has yet to find his feet. Now I’m not going to put the boot into the man for having the ambition to play for CELTIC but you must question the ambition of Celtic to be employing Australian 5 a side players over home grown talent.

We lost a a fair few good 11 a side Australian player to Germany but such is life, we must live within our playing budgets and not jeopardise our Celtic corporate bonuses scheme.

That ‘feed the poor’ Celtic ETHOSE fundamental to the meaning of our club, that is so yesterday.

Yup. And do you know what. Celtic will be the first with its hand up for it.

  24. Making 6 or 7 changes is pure nonsense, the guys coming on need a solid structure of established players around them. Otherwise it becomes like a pre-season friendly.

No point in starting Zaluska as he is likely to be gone next year. I’d keep changes to a max of 4, starting Fisher, O’Connell, Rogic & Scepovic instead of Matthews, Jason, Biton & Griffiths. Depending on how game is going wouldn’t rule out one of either Mulgrew, McGregor or even Derk as potential replacements.

I just have a feeling though that Ronny will surprise us and spring one of the younger bhoys like Tierney, McMullan or Donnelly.
